Chapter 40 - Date Night (Part 3)

The maître d handed Kai Adalyn's coat, and he wrapped it gently over her shoulders. She was leaning in to him a bit for support where the wine had made her a bit tipsy.

"Ready?" Kai gave her a reassuring squeeze.

Adalyn nodded and he led her towards the front exit with his arm wrapped firmly around her waist. The main restaurant floor was mostly empty now and with her coat wrapped around her, she didn't garner as many looks as when they first came in.

As Kai led her outside, one of the valets, a young blonde female shifter, approached them. "Can I get you your car sir?" She beamed at him expectantly. Kai silently slipped her the valet ticket and she took it from his hand. She deliberately grazed her fingers over his catching him off guard. When he eyed her suspiciously, she looked up at him intensely through her heavy eyelashes. Even with his altered appearance, he still attracted a lot of female attention.

This subtle look and interaction did not escape Adalyn. Her eyes flashed black instantly. She tucked her self further in to Kai's chest and then bared her teeth at her. Her canines had descended slightly to show her annoyance. A deep heavy growl escaped her throat surprising both herself and Kai. The small crowd waiting outside became silent as they felt the dominant waves slowly ebb off of her.

"I.... I'll be right back with your car." The young valet jumped sensing the dominant hostility coming from her, then quickly scuttled away.

"Woah, easy there baby..." He pulled her in closer to him to put her more at ease and then started rubbing his hand in small circles on her back. This was the first time that he had seen her like this, and her energy was impressive.

Adalyn followed the valet with her eyes and then her head as she went to fetch the car. Kai could still feel the hostility and tension in her body as she fixated on her.

"Hey, look at me..." he whispered. Kai physically turned her head back to him with his hand to draw her attention away from the valet. "Relax..." He kissed her softly then loosely bit her bottom lip to help her regain focus. Her eyes went back to there original emerald green as his action had the desired effect. Feeling more at ease Adalyn resettled her head back in to his chest.

Kai couldn't help but feel delighted at his mate's possessive act. He knew the wine was partly the cause of her looser tongue and dominant display, but he was still happy nonetheless.

The valet pulled up with the car and Kai eased Adalyn in to the passenger seat before he jumped in to the driver’s side. The valet gave both of them a wide birth this time around. Kai took out his brown contacts that were now starting to irritate his eyes, then pulled off in the car. As they headed down the busy streets, he looked at her as she repeatedly shifted in the seat, trying to get more comfortable.

Kai squeezed her knee with his hand. "You okay?"

"Hmmm..." Adalyn hummed.

"Are you sleepy?"

"Hmmm..." Adalyn hummed again.

Kai chuckled to himself at her lack of words. "What happened to the potty mouth from earlier? You done in already?"

"Hmmm...." Adalyn replied for the third time in a row.

Kai laughed again. "Okay, I get it, go to sleep. I'll get you home."

The feeling of being jostled stirred Adalyn awake from her gentle slumber. She could smell Kai's familiar oak and peppermint scent flooding her nose and his heartbeat against her ear as he carried her.

Kai looked down at her seeing her green eyes starting to flutter open. "Nearly home," he spoke softly. The moon was out and lit up the forest path leading to her house.

"I can walk from here" she muttered with her eyes closed again. She was still slurring her words a bit.

"You're alright, I can carry you."

"Aren't I heavy though?' she asked with a pouty bottom lip.

Kai raised an eyebrow as he looked down at her in his arms. "You're not the slightest bit heavy. If anything, I could do with fattening you up a bit. A few more rich dinners should sort you out." He smiled to himself in jest.

Adalyn giggled in to his chest. Kai loved the sound and the gentle vibrations of her laughter against him.

"Are you starting to feel more sober now?"

"Yupppp!" Adalyn replied. She made a popping sound at the end of the word to exaggerate it.

Her attempt to convince him had the opposite effect. Kai arrived at her house and paused for a moment to decide what to do. He debated taking her in through the front door, but if her aunt was up, he was worried he might get both of them in to trouble for bringing her back drunk.

Kai settled on sneaking her in through her bedroom window. He kicked off his shoes, whilst still holding Adalyn in his arms. Knowing that he'd need a bit more support from Pax to jump up to her bedroom window, he activated his invocation and partially shifted his feet. His eyes turned red as he did so. In a flash they were on the roof just outside of her bedroom and he lowered his head to step through her window.

Adalyn's hand suddenly came up to his face as she eyed him curiously. "Woah, your eyes are red?" Kai's eyes slowly changed back to blue as his feet went back to normal.

"I'll explain it sometime..." he whispered, being conscious that it was late. "When you're sober," he continued. He nuzzled her neck gently as he put her down on her bed. Adalyn held on to the back of his neck and she pulled him down with her, catching him by surprise.

"Are you sure I can't convince you to stay?" she spoke softly into his face. She licked her bottom lip as she started lustfully at his.

"You really are a different kind of beast after a few drinks huh?" Kai gave her a chaste kiss. "As much as I'd like to, I don't think that would be a good idea."

Adalyn pushed out her bottom lip in a childish pout. "Fine...okay." She rolled over on to her side and closed her eyes again. Kai slipped her heels off each foot then placed them on the floor. He threw a blanket over her then kissed the top of her head. "Night Adalyn."

"Hmm..." she muttered softly in acknowledgement to the warm kiss on her face. "Goodnight Kai Kai."

Kai was just about to sit up off her bed, but he stopped abruptly when the words registered in his head. He hadn't been called that in a really really long time. His mouth went dry and he looked back at her to recollect what she just said.

"Adalyn, what did you just call me?" Kai rolled her on to her back to ask her again, but she had already drifted off to sleep. *'It had to just be a coincidence, right?'* he told himself. *'Maybe I've had too much wine too'*. He stared at her and watched her chest slowly rise and fall rhythmically to each of her breaths. *'It's definitely just a coincidence'* he concluded. Even Melody used to call him that back when he was really young, but hearing Adalyn say it made him think of her. It made him think of Rae.

He swept some of her hair out of her face and sighed quietly to himself. She looked peaceful and innocent. He wished he could say the same about himself. There was still a lot that he had to do and figure out for her to remain that way and none of it was moving quick enough.

"Night Sleeping Beauty" he called again before he ducked back out through her window in to the night.

Kai took a different route back to his quarters of the palace. He'd been spending more time away from there and was having to find new inventive ways to escape the Spanish inquisition from harassing him. In other words, his mother Ophelia and his sister Melody. He headed to the green outside of his balcony window then made his way up on to the balcony itself.

He opened the balcony doors then threw his jacket on to the bed. As he approached his closet to change out of his clothes, a familiar scent caught his attention. He stilled as he sensed another presence in his room. As he turned to locate the source Kai could feel his whole body getting heavy as the person dialled up their dominant waves and made themselves truly known.

"Well well... look what the cat dragged in." The voice spoke darkly from across the room.
