Chapter 23
Beta Bailey
I arrive home after a long trip for Alpha Kai. As I approach the pack land, things seem to be unraveling. I can hear wolves talking, and everyone sounds angry. I go straight to the pack house to see what the hell is going on with everyone.
I open the door to see Alpha Kai and Henry at the table talking. Alpha Kai looks up at me. He looks at me differently. I am not going to lie about our friendship. It is special. I work hard for him, and we occasionally play hard together. I guess I was expecting to come home to a stiff drink and some playtime.
"What is going on?" I ask. I was not prepared for the words that come from Alpha Kai.
"My mate was kidnapped," Alpha Kai says.
"MATE! When did that happen?" I ask. Alpha Kai has a mate, no fucking way. Not this playboy, fuck everything he can pin down. There is no fucking way.
"She came here with the new Beta Finn, and things went south fast," Alpha Kai says. He is distraught but determined to get her back. He spends the next hour explaining to me everything that has happened over the last few weeks. I am in shock.
"Let me talk to this Finn wolf and see what I can find out. You know I can read people very well," I say with a smile. I can read Alpha Kai right now, and I know it is over between us. I will never bed down with him again, and he loves Alaska. I am okay with it, I guess. I never expected anything from it, but he was a lot of fun.
"Henry and I will take you to see him. Jake is watching him," Alpha Kai says.
"Okay, well, let's go," I say.
The three of us go to the black SUV. I get in the front with Henry. Alpha Kai gets into the back. I want to ask Henry about everything, and he knows it. He reaches over and touches my face. "We will talk later," Henry says.
"Okay," I say, shaking my head. I hope he does not think he will get in my pants, not that I am not banging the Alpha. I can find something else, and I do not need his pity fuck.
The drive over to see Finn is quiet. I know of the Larringer Wolves, and I know their Alpha, but it does not make sense to me why the son of the Alpha would be here with us and have a wife or forced wife that is now in love with the Alpha and kidnapped. All of this knowledge makes my head hurt.
"Why does the Larringer wolves want Alaska?" I ask, remembering that was left out of the story.
The question angers Alpha Kai. Maybe he did not bring it up on purpose. "Because her brother killed the Alpha's daughter," Alpha Kai says.
"That does not make sense, so they want to enslave her or punish her?" I ask.
"No, they want her to have a baby and give it to Alpha Larringer as payment for her brothers' transgression," Alpha Kai growls.
I turn back around and look out the window. "That is fucked up," I say a little too loud.
"Yes, it is fucked up. He is going to breed with my mate and force her to have his child if we do not get to her," Alpha Kai says.
Henry looks at me, letting me know to shut up and just go with it. I have a feeling Henry will fill me in on everything later, even the parts ALpha Kai skipped. I know there is more to this story.
Alpha Kai, Henry, and I pull up to the small cabin. "Go inside and talk to him. I want the truth, and I want it tonight. If he was part of the plan to take Alaska, kill him," Alpha Kai says.
"Yes, sir," I say.
I get out of the SUV, making eye contact with Henry before entering the cabin. Jake is waiting for me. He opens the door to let me inside the cabin. "He is in the back. So that you know, he is a good wolf. This mess is not his fault. I hope you find what you need and can save his life," Jake says.
I give Jake a half smile and walk down the hall to speak with Finn. All the wolves in the pack know I have a special gift, and occasionally I use this gift to help Alpha Kai. I can see the lies and the truth when someone speaks to me. My mother was a witch. I did not inherit all his gifts, but I know what someone is saying between the lines. My little gift comes in handy sometimes, and this is one of those times.
I open the door to see Finn. He is not a very big wolf. Most of the Larringer wolves are huge, but he is smaller. I cannot believe he was a Beta, a warrior. "Hello, Finn," I say softly.
Finn looks up at me, defeated. "Are you here to kill me?" Finn asks me.
"I am here to get the truth, and whatever else happens is up to you," I say. I see no reason to lie to Finn. He will not trust me if I lie.
"I see; well, then let's get to it. I had nothing to do with it. But before you kill me, let me tell you where my father probably took her so you can save her. I do not want her harmed. Alaska does not deserve what he will do to her," Finn says.
Finn's words are pure. Finn loves Alaska and does not want her harmed. He had nothing to do with the kidnapping. "Can you tell what happened?" I ask.
Finn takes a deep breath. "The wolves came for me and my betrayal. They came to kill me, but Alaska stepped in, and they grabbed her. When she saw Alpha Kai, she ran to him. I tried to stop her. I was afraid there were more wolves, but she would not listen to me, so when no one was watching, they grabbed her," Finn says.
"Will you help us get her back?" I ask him.
Finn does not hesitate. "YES! I love her," Finn says.
I look behind me to see Alpha Kai. He rushes to Finn and grabs him before I can stop him. "I am going to kill you," Alpha Kai growls at Finn.
"Stop, he did not have anything to do with Alaska's kidnapping," I scream.
Alpha Kai drops Finn to the ground. Henry comes into the room. "Take Alpha back to the pack house. I have a lot to discuss with Finn," I tell Henry.
I notice Finn looking at Jake in an odd manner. Hmmm. "Take Jake with you. I need to ask him some questions later," I say.
Jake looks at me, and then Henry. Before Henry can grab him, he shifts and takes off. "Let him go," I say. I already know where Jake will run.
