Chapter 94
Mihai PoV
I have to let her go, i have to let Mae meet with the devil, all because we need more time to gain support. I should be angry, I should be shouting until my lungs give out and demanding that she stay here with me, where it’s safe. But I know Mae and she is stubborn, sometimes I think she gets it from her father, he’s never been known to back down from anything.
“Fuck.” I groan, running a hand through my hair.
“It’s going to be fine, Mihai.” She promises, “I know what I’m doing.”
“I fucking hope so.” I grind my teeth and clench my hands into fists, “I know I can’t tell you not to go, but I can urge you to be safe.”
“I won’t put myself in a situation where I can’t escape.” She says, pushing her way back into my arms. “I know this is hard for you to accept, but I’m not weak. I can do this, and I can make it back here in one piece.”
Mae’s brother adjusts himself, clearly wanting to speak, but one look from Luthor and his jaw clenches shut.
Mae notices, but she doesn’t say anything about it as she turns to her father, “I need you to believe me when I say that I know what I am doing.” She growls, “both of you are acting like I’m a fucking child, and I’m not. I am perfectly capable of protecting myself against hunters. I was one of them, I know how they fight.”
“You do know how they fight, and they asked for you personally to come alone.” Dren says in a low voice, turning to me. “We have to let her go, we can’t handle a full scale assault right now, all our men still haven’t arrived.”
“We have enough men to protect the mansion.” I snap, is he seriously wanting to send her into the woods alone to meet with our enemy?
He’s crazy, she is crazy. Am I the only one who hasn’t lost my goddamn mind?
Mae sits herself on my lap, her eyes wide and pleading, “I need you to trust that I can do this.” She says.
I heave a sigh, taking several deep breaths to calm my wrath. “Fine.” I say, “but I will be waiting where they can’t sense me, and the first time I hear something I don’t like, I’m dragging you out of there.”
I must be crazy for agreeing, but Mae isn’t going to let this go. She’s strong headed.
I know deep in my chest that she is perfectly capable of protecting herself and killing the council, but that doesn’t mean that I want her to be put in the situation where she has to. If we take down the head of the hunter council without a proper plan, someone else will take their place. Those creatures are like a fucking hydra, cut off one head and two more appear.
She scratches in my ear, throwing her arms around my neck, “I knew you’d come around eventually.” She smiles. “I’ll let you and my father sort out the details, I need to go rest so I’m ready for tonight.” She turns to Dren. “Send a letter back saying that I will be there, alone.”
Mae jumps off my lap and kisses my cheek, smiling wildly as she runs from the room. She hasn’t slept in days, and I can tell it’s been taking a toll on her. I’m glad she’s gone to rest, even if it is for the wrong reasons.
I turn to Luthor as Dren leaves the dining room, shouting after Mae as she takes the stairs two at a time. She isn’t quiet about it, the sound of her feet echoing through the otherwise quiet mansion.
“She’s crazy if she thinks they’ll go for peace without conditions, I’ve never known them to let a vampire go, let alone one who had the powers of a witch.” Luthor says coldly, “this could be a trap.”
I nod, “you’re right, it could be a trap.” I say slowly, keeping my voice down as the siblings bicker on the stairs. “Which is why she isn’t going alone.”
Luthor looks at me like I’m the one who’s gone insane, “they clearly stated that she must come alone.” He retorts.
He’s confused, I’m not.
“I’m going to station men far enough away that it won’t raise their alarms, and Mae is going to wear an earpiece, we all are.” I say, leaning back in my chair. “If she is going to do this. Then she will do it my way.”
Luthor smiles for the first time all day, “that’s perfect, they said we couldn’t be there in person, but they said nothing about being there digitally.”
I nod and smile back, rising from my chair, “gather as many volunteers as you can, when Mae leaves tonight, I want to be ready for anything that they throw at us.”
I’d be ready to burn the whole fucking forest down if it meant protecting her, I don’t care how many innocents die, all I care about is the woman who stole my heart.
“I’ll make sure everything is ready to go at a moments notice.” He says, rising from his chair and clapping me on the shoulder, “she isn’t going to like this, but you have my full support.”
I don’t care if she likes the plan, I don’t care if she stomps her feet and refuses to listen to me. She WILL wear the earpiece and she WILL do as she is told for once.
It isn’t just her life at stake here, it’s all of us. We need to know what they say, as they say it.
“Go.” I tell Luthor. “We only have until sundown.”
He nods, scrambling from the room as Mae and her brother go up the stairs, their voices lower than before. They think they are sneaky, but I know exactly what they’re planing.
Mae is going to try and sneak out before the sun goes down, and before me and the others can leave, but she forgets how old I am. The sun doesn’t bother me. It can’t hurt me the way it can hurt lessor Nati.
My little love is in for a big surprise when I’m finished, she thinks she can do this all alone, without help.
But I will help her, even if she screams and kicks that she doesn’t want me to. She is MINE, and she will do as I fucking say for once.
Come nightfall, she’ll learn which of us is stronger.
And it’s going to be me.
she thinks that she can handle everything alone, but the truth is, she can't. She's still weaker than a normal Nati, even if she does have the powers of a witch.
Mae doesn't know how to use her power safely, she's going to get herself hurt, and I'll be there to pick up the pieces.
