A Harrowing encounter
Good morning, I thought to myself as I awoke to the soft light filtering through the small window in my room. Though I wasn't given any work today, the sense of confinement was overwhelming. Deciding to explore the area, I barely stepped out of my room when Nancy informed me that a feast was being held for Evander and Mamba's return.
"Is there anything I need to do?" I asked Nancy.
"No, I was just letting you know," she replied.
With no responsibilities assigned, I stayed in the room with Sofia and some other girls. The feast was in full swing, but we weren’t invited. Only those privately called by one person or another could participate. I wasn't called by Sebastian, so we stayed put, listening to the distant sounds of celebration.
"Do they often have these feasts?" I asked Sofia, trying to make sense of the situation.
"Only on special occasions," she replied. "Evander and Mamba’s return is one of those. They’ve been away for a while, securing new territories."
As the festivities continued, I couldn’t shake the feeling of isolation. It was clear that despite our proximity, we were worlds apart from those who attended the feast. I tried to distract myself by talking to Sofia and the other girls, but my mind kept wandering back to the life I had before all this.
Once the feast ended, I took the opportunity to wander around the compound, my initial plan for the day. As I walked through the garden, I stumbled upon Sebastian and Evander near the fountain. Startled, I realized I couldn't hide quickly enough; I had already taken several steps into the open space.
Pretending to inspect the flowers, I glanced up to see Evander waving at me from afar. Flustered, I looked left and right, unsure of what to do. I wanted to wave back, but hesitation took over. Awkwardly, I turned and ran back to my room, heart pounding.
"What's wrong?" Sofia asked as I burst into the room.
"I... I just saw Sebastian and Evander in the garden," I stammered. "I didn't know what to do."
Sofia chuckled softly. "It's okay, Ariella. They won’t bite. Well, not unless you give them a reason to."
The next morning, I learned that Evander had left to attend to important business and would return in two days. Sebastian stayed behind. Later that afternoon, as I roamed the compound, I saw Sebastian again. This time, he was having a serious conversation with one of the guards. The guard spoke about a gang member who had betrayed Sebastian, mentioning how he had already been beaten but was still ordered to come outside.
Hearing the word "betrayal," I saw a noticeable change in Sebastian's demeanor. His eyes grew intense, and his aura shifted to one of controlled fury. His body language was tense, every muscle coiled as if ready to strike.
The traitor was dragged into Sebastian's presence, pleading, "I didn’t mean to! I just needed extra money."
Sebastian, visibly enraged, asked, "Why didn’t you come to me?"
The man stammered, "I didn’t know how to reach you."
"That's a lie," Sebastian retorted. "Anyone can get to me anytime. Why did you betray me?"
The traitor, now desperate, spat out, "You’re not a true mafia lord! You act like a tyrant, doing whatever you want, whenever you want, without following any procedure. You’re ruthless!"
Sebastian’s fury boiled over. He punched the man, knocking him to the ground. "You don’t talk to me like that! I own you!"
"Exactly!" the man gasped. "This is what I’m talking about! You own everyone. You have slaves. I don’t want to work for a tyrant!"
Sebastian’s next punch silenced him, blood splattering from his mouth. "After everything I've done to protect you all, this is how you repay me? You don’t like how I work, but you never offer any ideas or solutions. You just decide to betray me because it suits you."
The guards remained silent, fear etched on their faces. The traitor lay bleeding, unable to respond. "I’m tired of this," Sebastian declared. "I won’t be around anymore. When I return, I’ll do whatever I want and leave."
In a final act of fury, Sebastian delivered a fatal blow, his fist crushing the man's throat. Blood poured out, and the man gasped his last breath. Sebastian walked away, his hands stained with blood.
Terrified, I ran back to my room, shaking. I couldn’t comprehend what had just happened. Sofia found me and asked what was wrong. After I explained, she told me that Sebastian had just had a conversation with El Rado about growing soft, and about having feelings for a woman.
"He said he would do whatever he wants, feel whatever he wants, and is tired of everyone treating him like he's always making a mistake," Sofia said. "The only people who can talk to him are his brother and Evander. That’s the only reason why he allows them to speak."
As I processed her words, fear gripped me. The realization of how everyone’s actions and words affected Sebastian became clear. I felt helpless, knowing I couldn’t do anything to change the situation. That night, I lay in bed, thoughts racing through my mind until exhaustion finally claimed me, plunging me into a restless sleep.
The next morning dawned bright and early. I woke up with a sense of unease that lingered from the previous day's events. Determined to shake it off, I decided to take another walk around the compound. Maybe a bit of fresh air and sunshine would help clear my head.
As I walked through the garden, the tranquility of the place contrasted sharply with the tension and violence I had witnessed. It was hard to reconcile the beauty of the flowers and the peaceful sound of the fountain with the brutality that lay just beneath the surface.
Lost in thought, I didn’t notice Sebastian until I was almost upon him. He was standing by the fountain, staring into the water with a contemplative look on his face. His presence was commanding, yet there was an air of melancholy about him.
"Good morning," I said softly, not wanting to startle him.
He looked up, his expression unreadable. "Morning."
I hesitated, unsure whether to continue the conversation or leave him to his thoughts. But curiosity got the better of me. "Are you alright?"
Sebastian's eyes met mine, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of vulnerability. "It's been a rough few days," he admitted.
"I can imagine," I replied, thinking back to the confrontation with the traitor. "I saw what happened yesterday."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Sometimes I wonder if it's all worth it. The constant betrayals, the need to maintain control... It takes a toll."
I stepped closer, feeling a strange compulsion to offer comfort. "You do what you have to do to survive. It may not be easy, but it’s necessary."
He gave me a small, appreciative smile. "You're right. It’s just... there are times when I wish things were different."
Before I could respond, a guard approached, breaking the moment. "Sebastian, there's something you need to see."
Sebastian's demeanor shifted instantly, his guard up once more. "I'll be right there."
As he turned to leave, he glanced back at me. "Thank you, Ariella."
I nodded, watching as he walked away. It was clear that beneath his ruthless exterior, there was a man struggling with his own demons. The more I learned about Sebastian, the more complex he became.
As the day went on, I found myself thinking about the conversation I had with Sebastian. His words resonated with me, and I couldn't help but feel a growing sense of empathy for him. Despite his harsh methods, he was trying to navigate a world that demanded strength and ruthlessness.
That evening, as the sun set over the compound, casting long shadows across the garden, I sat by the fountain, reflecting on everything that had happened. The more I learned about this place and its people, the more I realized how much I had yet to uncover.
The sound of footsteps brought me out of my reverie. It was Sofia, her expression curious. "What are you doing out here?"
"Just thinking," I replied. "About everything."
She sat down beside me, her presence comforting. "It's a lot to take in, isn’t it?"
"Yes," I admitted. "There’s so much complexity here. So many layers."
Sofia nodded. "Everyone has their own story, their own struggles. It’s what makes this place both fascinating and terrifying."
We sat in silence for a while, the only sound the gentle splash of the fountain. As the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, I felt a strange sense of peace. Despite the violence and fear, there was also beauty and resilience.
That night, as I lay in bed, I thought about Sebastian and the burden he carried. His struggle for control, his desire for something more. It was a delicate balance, one that required both strength and vulnerability.
Before I knew it, sleep claimed me, my dreams filled with images of the people I had come to know. The ruthless mafia lord with a heart, the ex-military sniper, the loyal brother, and the complex web of relationships that bound them all together.
In the days that followed, I continued to observe and learn, determined to find my place in this new world.
