Chapter 32
Unedited...
Sabrina was confused, and no one would answer any of her questions to solve that problem.
She stared at Nathan in a frozen position with her mouth slightly open. She had to be in some weird dream. They must have heavily drugged her.
He was incredibly more attractive in real life she thought, and taller too.
Nathan approaches and is astounded to see his wife awake and squinting up at him. ”Sabrina." He voices.
Wait….? He was saying her name… Was she hallucinating? What the hell was he doing here? What the hell is going on?
Seeing the sudden change in Sabrina's facial expression, Gracie moves away letting Nathan step closer to her.
He instantly grabs her hand and sits on the chair beside her bed.
The sudden tingle that shot through her caused her to pull her hand back quickly. "Why are you here?"
"Sabrina." He groans. "I am here for you… Why else would I be here?”
"Why?"
"Nathan, can I talk to you for a moment?" Mariel interrupts them. She points toward the door. "In the hallway."
"Someone better tell me what the hell is going on," Sabrina yells knowing they weren't telling her something. "Why, why do you need to speak to him?"
The next second Dr. Chang enters. "I've heard the patience has woken." He shuts the door behind him with a smile plastered to his face.
He walks over to the bed and Nathan steps aside to let the doctor sit near Sabrina.
Neither he nor Mariel moved to go out the door wanting to make sure Sabrina was okay.
The doctor checks her heart and blood pressure and then looks at her with a smile. "I'm going to ask you a couple of questions okay?"
She nods. She then shifts her gaze over at Nathan, who had stuck his hands in his pocket and was surveying what was going on. “Why the hell was he here? What universe did she enter? Was she even awake?
The doctor asked a couple of simple common sense questions. A little math, her name, birthday, and address. Then he asked. "What year is it?"
"2017." She answered without hesitation.
Nathan stiffened. Fuck he almost mouths. His chest rises and falls heavily and his eyes roll back in his head. This couldn't be happening.
Sabrina looked around dazed for a few moments. Then she quickly realized that it wasn’t the year 2017.” She wanted to scream she was so confused. "What year is it?"
The doctor gave her a reassuring smile. "It's the year 2020."
Three whole years!!!
She closes her eyes wanting to when she opens them for it all to be a dream. "How long have I been in here?"
"About a week," Nathan replies.
No one else giving her answers, she looks at him with pleading eyes. He obviously knew more than she did.
"What happened to me?"
He swallows and greets his teeth."Someone tried to hurt you."
"Why?" She pleads.
The doctor stands up and puts his hands on Sabrina's shoulders pushing down to lay on the bed. "Ok calm down." He orders.
He glances at Nathan. "I'm going to have to run some tests."
Nathan nods his head. "Whatever she needs."
Sabrina shifts her focus back and forth between both men and couldn't understand why he was telling Nathan Alden and not her mother.
She feels Mariel’s soft hands caress her face. "You need to relax honey. You can't stress yourself out okay?"
Dr. Change briskly leaves the room.
"Mom, I need to know what's happened to me. And where's dad?"
"Mariel." Nathan interrupts. "May I talk to you for a moment?"
Mariel and Sabrina look over at him then at each other. I'm going to talk to Nathan, and I'll be back in a minute."
"Mom." Sabrina protest.
"One minute Sabrina." She says leading Nathan into the hallway.
Sabrina looks over to her quiet sister sitting in a chair close to the window once the door closes.
"Are you going to give me some answers?"
Gracie gets up and walks close to the bed. "You shouldn't be worrying about any of this. Get some sleep."
Sabrina grabs her hand forcefully. She wasn't going to accept that answer, and she refused not to know what was going on.
"What is Nathan Alden doing here? And why is the doctor addressing him and not mom?”
Gracie gulps and looks around as if she was contemplating whether or not to answer. "He's... He's your husband." She decided to admit.
Her eyes nearly pop out of her head. What? Nathan Alden, her husband? That's impossible. How could this happen? She held up her left hand and registered that there were a diamond ring and band on her ring finger. She gasps.
"What? How?" She looks around like the world was the strangest place.
"Ahh...I can't remember what you told me." She lied. It was just a lot to give to her so soon.
Sabrina knew there was more to that but has other things on her mind.
"Dads dead isn't he?"
Gracie bows her head.
"No," Sabrina whispers.

Nathan and Mariel exit the hospital room and face each other in the hallway. He needed to speak to her before anything was explained to Sabrina.
He sticks his hands in his pockets nervously. "I know that I'm supposed to be her soon to be ex-husband but...I need to take her home with me. I can protect her.” He shifts his weight. “Until I find out who's after her, I need round the clock security for her...and...I know she won't go home with me without your help."
Once she finds out that they were blackmailed into marrying each other, and were in the process of divorce, she would fight him all the way. Although her memory was gone, he was sure that she was just as stubborn.
"I agree with you," Mariel states calmly as she crosses her arms. "She's not going to see the seriousness of this situation because she doesn't remember, and it's very important that she's protected. But there is a problem...If she finds out that her father blackmailed you, she will never be with you. She won't let you protect her. Her stubbornness will win all.”
He rubs the back of his neck harshly. "What do we do?"
"We tell her the truth. You're her husband. She won't think there was a motive behind her marriage. You will take her home and keep her safe but you can't tell her the truth… not until you feel the time is right."
She moves near the door and grabs the door handle to re-enter the room but then turns back to meet his eyes... "I’m trusting you with my daughter Nathan Alden…
He nods and when she was behind the door he braces his body and head to the nearest wall.
Mariel's idea to let Sabrina believe that they are happily married might be the only solution. He was a little relieved knowing that he had her mother on his side but, what if she still protest? Wanting nothing to do with him. What if she doesn't care that they're married? What if her memory being gone causes a bigger rift between them?
He runs frustrated fingers through his hair. He had to do this. He had to do this to protect her.
When he entered the hospital room, what he laid eyes on was three crying women. Sabrina sandwiched in the middle.
He knew they were reliving Sabrina's father's death. He felt a sharp pain in his heart. Tears in Sabrina's eyes made him weak. He felt like he could kill someone when he sees her this way. He also just wanted to hold her and let her know that everything would be okay. That he would make it ok. No matter what he had to do. He would do it. For her, anything.
A light knock comes from the door, and the doctor enters again. He was a little taken back.
“Whoa. Everything is going to be okay ladies calm down. I have good news." He opens a folder with the images of Sabrina's Brain.
"After taking a second look at her cat-scan and knowing the severity of her injury it's more than likely her memory will return. However,” He looks at the three women wiping their eyes and sniffling.
"Sabrina you shouldn't be under any stress." He scolds.
"I'm sorry." She sniffles.
Nathan's heart twinged with weakness.
"I'm going to have a nurse sedate her. She needs to get rest."
He hits the button near her bed calling a nurse. "I'm sorry to have to do this, but it is extremely important that she gets rest. I'm going to have to ask you to go home and let her rest.” He glances between Gracie and her mother. Both women nod.
"But before I go I would like to know my daughter's condition." Mariel makes it known politely.
"Of course." Dr. Chang looks at the four of them. "There's a great chance her memory will return but, there is also a chance it does not. I suggest you encourage her to remember and let her get back into her regular routine.
The nurse enters. "Yes, doctor."
He tells her a long name of something and asks her to bring it to him.
"Any questions?" He looks amongst them.
"When can I take her home?" Nathan questions. In his perpetual vision, he notices Sabrina’s widened eyes on him. He shifts his focus and locks with her.
"I'm not entirely sure as long as she continues to show improvement a couple of weeks at most.
She diverts her eyes to the doctor. "Will I lose more memory?" She knew it sounded like a stupid question, but she had to know it would get worse and forget who she is?"
"Unless you hit your head again I would say you won't.”
The nurse comes back and hands the doctor a vile.
"I'm going to give her a sedative she will sleep soon."
"I'm staying here with her." Nathan lets it be known immediately.
"I know, but you two should try and get some rest as well." The doctor administers the sedative and left.
Mariel and Gracie kiss Sabrina and promise to come tomorrow with pictures of the last few years. They leave just as she closes her eyes.
Nathan takes off his shoes and sits on the bed. Knowing she was okay suddenly made him feel tired.
Luckily her bed was large. He lays beside her and gently places his arm across her moving stomach. Her scent and aura, just knowing that she lay beside him safe, and healthy, alive, and sleeping comfortably.' He closes his eyes, and let sleep overcome him.
