Chapter 38

UNEDITED

Sabrina read the whole contract and couldn't believe her signature was at the bottom. Everything was a lie. A big fat lie. This wasn't her life, and Nathan didn't love her. How stupid was she to believe that a man like Nathan could actually love her? Why did her mother tell her he did? Ouch... That hurt. She thought that her mother was betraying her, and her sister too. ”Why are you showing me this?" She blinks up at her sister-in-law.

Baylee rolls her eyes. "Because you deserve to know the truth. You deserve to know how you really got my brother. You deserve to know the type of person you really are.” She points at Sabrina’s chest. “Nathan is only with you because if he leaves, he stands to lose 50% of the company.”

"No." Sabrina pleads in a whisper. Her heart hurt, her stomach churned and her throat went dry.

"Yes." Baylee disagrees. "And you're destroying my family."

How could she be this disgusting person? How could she change so much so quickly? Did her parents know? What was happening? She was so confused.
"How am I even capable of doing this?" She searches the document.

"It wasn't just you” Baylee folds her arms. “It was your mother and father too. All for money. My mother cries every day because of this. She lost her son to you of all people."

"You, what does that mean? Me?"

"Oh come on Sabrina,” she rolls her eyes again. “you only lost a few years."

A knock on the door startles both of them. "Sabrina, let's go home sweetheart." It was Nathan.

"Look,” Baylee grabs her forearm. “I'm the only one who was honest with you. The only thing I ask in return is you don’t tell my brother what I told you." She moves near the door and opens it.

Nathan's handsome face appears before her. He extends his hand out to his wife and she takes it.

She put on the best fake smile she could muster and let him lead her downstairs.
As they walked down he looked at her with concern. "Something wrong?"

She smiles at him and shakes her head.

He was so good at acting. He completely had her fooled. She felt like an idiot. She was too much in shock to let the hurt in completely. Somehow she wasn't angry at him. She wasn't angry at all. Confused is what was at the forefront right now.

While she was saying goodbyes to the children. “I’ll just be right back..” he hurries back up the stairs.

He barges into the room his little sister is in. “What did you say to her?" He greets his teeth. Anger was radiating off of him.

His sister was sitting on her bed scrolling through something on her phone when he entered...
”Don't you know how to knock?"

"What the hell did you say to her?" He asked again, more demanding this time.

"Relax, I just showed her a couple of naked baby pictures of you."

"I swear Baylee." He warns her.

"Nathan." It was Sabrina's soft voice from behind him. "Are you ready?"

He gives a warning glare before grabbing Sabrina's hands and leading her to the truck.

Once inside he starts the engine and looks over at her. "What did she say to you?"

"Are you going to tell me why you're in so much of a panic? I only spoke to your sister. You're not like this when I'm talking to Clarissa." She wanted to watch him in a lie. He seems to care more than he should if she found out. Maybe he cares about her.

He rubs his nape uncomfortably. "You and Baylee haven't really gotten along well." He pulls the car out of the driveway and into the road.

"Who is trying to kill me? And why?" She shifts her focus to him as his eyes stay focused on the road.

He hears her but doesn't look, or answer right away.

"Nathan…..? Do you know?"

"The man that they have in custody is refusing to talk."

"Hmm.." She disappointedly turns her head to blankly stare out the window.

He grabs her hand that is resting on her thigh.
She turns and smiles at him and almost immediately goes back to looking out the window. It was a fake smile and he knew it. He puts pressure on her hands. "Hey." He calls her attention back. "I love you." He declares.

Unexpectedly butterflies started flying around in her stomach. It was what he said, how he said it, the way he looked at her... It was like he really meant it.
Could he really fake that? Is Baylee telling the truth?
She had to be. That was her signature.

Letting her eyes fall to the floor. "I love you too." It was the truth.

She looks back over to the window not wanting to look at his handsome face any longer. She wasn't mad, she was more disappointed than anything else. It's not disappointment toward Nathan, it's disappointment at herself. She didn't trust her instincts anymore. He had her completely fooled. She believed him when he told her he loved her. Even now, he just said it to her so sincerely that she believed him again.

She squeezes her eyes shut when she remembers how she practically begged him to sleep with her. God, she felt so stupid. No wonder he kept trying to tell her no. He was trying not to take advantage of her and she just couldn't see it.

The rest of the ride was silent. He knew something was up. Baylee did something. He could only hope that she didn't tell Sabrina the truth. He wanted to be the one to tell her, and he planned on doing that soon.
He kept procrastinating doing it because he was afraid to lose her forever. So he kept quiet on their ride home. When they arrived he let her go take the shower she said she needed.

He sat in his office and contemplated what his next move should be. He knew he had to tell her, but how? He didn't know what he was going to say but he knew it was time for her to know the truth... He looks over at the bar thinking about how many drinks he should take before going to find her. After remembering the loss of control he experiences around her, he decides against it.

He left her for about an hour now. With each second that passes, he prolongs his journey up the stairs and to their room.

When he finally made it upstairs Sabrina was still wrapped in a towel and sitting on the bed with her back facing him. He could see the water dripping down her back from her still-wet hair.

"I ran out of body wash." Her voice was sombre. She doesn’t turn or even move.

He was a little stumped. "You can use some of mine." The last thing he thought they would be talking about when he arrived in the room was body wash.

"I did." She states and pauses. "I" she pauses again. She seemed to be having trouble with whatever she was trying to get out.

"What's wrong?"

"I remember that smell." Cucumbers...
While taking a shower she was thinking about what Baylee had revealed to her. She just kept trying to think about the person she became and Nathan could really be that good of a liar when suddenly she opened Nathan's body wash and took a huge whiff. It hit her like a lightning bolt right then.

She finally turns to look at him. "I remember everything."

He felt like her words echoed. He clears his throat and shoves his hands in his pockets.

“Why?" She asks. "Why lie to me?"

"I needed to protect you."

She laughs. Not a happy laugh but a you have to be kidding me laugh. "I feel like a complete idiot."

"You're not an idiot."

"I sure feel like one." She gets off the bed and passes Nathan on her way to the closet.

He lets her pass him. He didn't know what to do because he didn't know what she would do.
She dressed in jeans, and a black long-sleeve blouse and comes back out.

“What did Baylee tell you?"

"Baylee showed me our marriage agreement.” She buttons the blouse in haste. “I don't know how she got it."

He greets his teeth. He knew it. "She's dead to me.”.

"Can you really blame her? Her mother's hurt and she feels her pain. It would kill me to see my mother hurt and then have to be around the person who's hurting her."

"Baylee is immature, she keeps letting my mother influence her actions and it’s cost her a brother today." His eyes follow as she goes back into the closet and comes back with shoes. “What are you doing?"

"I'm leaving."

He cocks one of his brows. “No, you’re not.” It was as if she challenged him. “It’s not safe anywhere else.”

"I will be. When I was kidnapped, I woke up in the back of the van and heard one of the men on the phone with the man who hired them to kill me. I heard your dad’s voice before they noticed I was awake. I didn't get to hear anything else... they made sure I couldn't. She sat on the bed and began putting on her shoes. Her face changes as she recalls the memory.

Nathan swallows hard. He couldn't bear thinking about this. But at the same time, he was filled with rage. His father hired someone to kill her. He knew it. "I've had my suspicions. I've just been trying to find some proof. Now you can go to the police with what you remember."

"Can we do it another day?" She slips on her shoes.

"What do you think you’re doing? You're not going a damn place.” He nearly barks.

She looks down at her feet. She didn't know what she was doing. "I wanna leave." She pleads softly.

"No." He affirms flatly. "What's wrong with you? Do you really have this much pride that you won't stay with me? Are you so stubborn it makes you stupid?"

Her brows join.

"This is the reason I had to lie to you." His jaw tightens.

”Did you have to pretend to be in love with me?"

"Are you blind or just playing dumb?"

She turns away shaking her head like she didn't want to hear anymore.

"Sabrina."

She didn't respond. She kept looking away from him.

"Sabrina." He says a little more sternly.

"What!" She yells and turns back to finally meet his eyes "What do you want from me?" Her eyes filled with water.

"Everything.” He declares. "I want everything from you. Your body, your mind, your every thought. Just like you've consumed mine. I want your entire life. I want you to spend it with me. I want you to carry my children." He steps closer to her and puts both of his hands on her face gazing down intently. "How don't you know that I'm obsessively in love with you?"
He taps a light kiss on her mouth.

"You love me?" She inquires in disbelief.

"Very…very…much." He admits sincerely.

"But...you don't want marriage or love…”

"Stop thinking that you know what I want... "I've told you what I want but you weren't hearing me." He lets out a breath. "Give me a chance Sabrina, and I'd marry you again."

"I." Gasping for words she stares at him unable to think. Was this an act? But he saved her. If he wanted to he could have let her die. He wasn't doing that, he was trying to protect her.

"Listen to me, I know you just remembered, but I want you to forget the past. See me the way you saw me an hour ago when you had no idea how we ended up married. See me as Nathan, not Desmond Alden's son."

"I've never looked at you like that." She interrupts him.

He grabs her face. "Listen to me." He orders sternly. "No company, or family rivalry, means anything to me. I want you. Let's start over."

"Ok." She agrees simply. “And no more being stubborn…”

"Really?" He was expecting more of a fight or at least a little more reasoning.

She hops on her tippy toes and kisses him.

His arms wrap around instantly. His grip became so tight that she thought she might pop. "Yes. I want a life with you too." It's not knowing they were forced that made it so clear to her now. There was no longer a fuzz in front of her eyes. She could see he loved her.

He presses his mouth onto hers harshly for a second. "I've wanted this for a long time."

"Me too." She says gazing up at him." I didn't think you could ever love me. I couldn't accept the fact that you were forced to marry me. I wanted you to choose me, not accept me."

"I did choose you, my love. I wasn't kidding when I said I spent months looking for you, and had it been anyone else, I would have rather tried my luck in court than get married."

"Really?"

He nods his head." And your father, he knew I wanted you. I don't think he would have arranged it otherwise."

That made her smile. Even though she didn't want to admit it, she held some resentment toward him for that. Now she could just let it go, and remember only the good.

"That's what I want to see every day."

"What?" She looks up at him curiously still in his arms.

"That beautiful smile...and I'll spend my life
putting it there."

"I love you, Nathan Alden.

"I love you, Sabrina Abigail Alden.

She reaches up, and he leans down, and their lips meet.
