Chapter 291

The German man motioned again and moved his hand towards the weapon at his belt. Her only experience with guns had been with Jorick and Oren, when they'd rescued Kale and been shot by the police. She remembered the way they'd had to dig the bullets out of their bodies. But she wasn't a vampire. If this man shot her, she wouldn't be digging bullets out; she'd be bleeding on the floor.
She made her way to the exit where one of the agents opened the door and stepped aside. The German man motioned her through it, and she found herself in a corridor lined in doors and a small water cooler. She waited until the door shut behind them and then she grabbed the nearly empty tank of the water cooler like a weapon and swung.
The man was faster than the guards. He sidestepped her attack and knocked the tank from her hands. It bounced and rolled away, splashing a trail of water behind it. Katelina went for the metal stand, but the man grabbed her hands and forced them behind her back. He jammed his knee into her spine and slammed her face first into the wall. He pressed the gun into her shoulder and hissed in her ear, "If you persist I will incapacitate you. Do you understand?"
She understood perfectly. He'd shoot her somewhere non-vital. She might not die, but she'd bleed just the same.
"Good." He stepped back and pulled her away from the wall by her coat. "Go to the last room in the hall."
With nothing else to do, she followed his directions. He walked behind her and she could feel the gun pointing at her back like a third eye staring into her soul. How in the hell had she gotten into this mess and how was she going to get out of it?
She opened the door and the man shoved her through and slammed it again. Inside, the walls were lined in Japanese posters, and a wooden table was heaped with papers and a walkie talkie. In front of it was a pair of plastic chairs and behind it sat Wolfe, wearing his black uniform and a scowl. "Where is Sadihra?"
Katelina gasped. "What are you doing here? It's daytime!"
"I'm staying up late," he answered sarcastically. "And what are you doing here? I can't believe you tried to go through immigration. I assumed you would stay holed up and hidden with the others until sundown."
She lifted her chin a notch. "Why shouldn't I? I'm perfectly legal."
"Are you Miss-" The German man handed over her fake ID and Wolfe read, "Janine Brook. Traveling with false identification is illegal. I should turn you over to the human authorities. Luckily, you'll be more useful to me free." He tapped his fingers on the table. "We won't need to look for Jorick and the others now, they will come to us. In the meantime, you can tell me why you're in Japan. Sadihra informed the Sodalitas that you were on your way to the United States, but you abandoned your plane and your pilots in Russia and took a ferry here. Why?"
She ignored the question. "What makes you think Jorick's holed up on the boat?"
"Because he can't exit in sunlight. He insisted on bringing you to Munich rather than risk leaving you in your citadel alone. He won't send you traveling by yourself. Where is Sadihra?"
She stalled for time while she tried to figure out an escape. "Why are you looking for us? Did The Guild send you?"
Wolfe chortled coldly. "They're surprisingly unconcerned with your detour, but the Kugsankal feel differently about it. Can you tell me why?"
Her answer was strangely truthful. "No."
"And you can't tell me where Sadihra is? Or your lover or his partners?" Katelina shook her head and Wolfe snorted. "Of course. You know nothing. I should just let you go."
Hope blossomed in her but died when she detected his sarcasm. "What are you going to do?"
"Detain you, of course. Then I will take a nap to be ready for this evening when Jorick comes for you. Perhaps he will be more talkative."
Wolf dismissed her with a gesture and turned to the German man. "Take her and lock the door on your way out. Just because the employees were warned to stay away, it doesn't mean they won't get curious and try to find an excuse to peek. I'm sure none of them were happy when they received their strange orders this morning."
The man saluted crisply. "Should I have them search the boat again, sir?"
Wolfe shook his head. "It's useless. With Jorick's talents he'll be able to conceal himself and Sadihra. They could look a hundred times and never find him. And tell them the evening special alert crew is no longer necessary. We won't need to prevent them from slipping away. They'll come to us once it's dark."
The man saluted again and grabbed Katelina's arm. She struggled, but his hand was like a vice. Even with the gun holstered he was intimidating and, with Wolfe in the room, she knew she stood no chance. She'd have to cooperate for now.
She was hauled through a door to the right and into a series of rooms that ended in what looked like a small concrete bunker. The man pushed her inside with enough force to knock her to her knees. She stood in time to see the heavy door slam. A second metal door stood to the left, but when she shook the handle, nothing happened.
She gave the room a thorough examination. The walls were solid and, except for a bulb hanging from the ceiling, the room was empty. There wasn't even a window. She wasn't sure if it had been built as some sort of disaster shelter, or to hold prisoners. It seemed equally suited to both.
Though they'd taken her suitcase, she still had her purse. The contents were of no help - IDs, chapstick, some makeup, some extra underwear, ticket stubs from the Russian train, the credit card, some pamphlets from the boat and other similar items. Since she didn't know how to make a bomb from cosmetics and gum wrappers, there was nothing that could help her escape.
Defeated, she sat on the floor and checked her watch. Some quick math left her with a local time of a quarter to noon. That left at least five hours until Jorick and the others would wake and then what? Kai had evaded capture so he could let them out. At least they wouldn't be trapped like she was. Hopefully he'd come get her out next.
The time ticked by. She was hungry, she was thirsty and she had to pee. Kai didn't appear, but neither did her captors. When she finally decided nothing else was going to happen, she peeled off her coat and used it as a pillow. It was probably safe to nap, she decided. After all, Wolfe would want her alive.
Katelina was drifting on the edge of a dream about vampires frozen in icebergs when a scraping sound jarred her awake. She sat up in time to see a slender Japanese man with long black hair and a sleek black coat. Coupled with his dark clothes and eyes, they gave a monochrome effect that made her think of Jorick. It wasn't just the lack of color, though. His skin was flawless, like porcelain, and his movements were too smooth and perfect. She didn't need to see his fangs to know what he was.
He looked her over impassively, then stepped back out of the room. She jerked to her feet, but the door was closed and locked when she reached it. She raised her fist to pound on it, then stopped. If he was a vampire he was probably working with Wolfe.
