Chapter 22 The Ambassador
"I'm so sorry I haven't been able to contact you since the ID check. The ambassador kept on hovering around me and I couldn't get a chance to see you guys sooner." Timothy apologized as we walked alongside him towards the ambassador's office.
I find that the corridors of this level were like a vast circular tunnel with all the rooms and establishments in the middle. The way to the ambassador's place was like the spiral stairs of the tunnel made of glass. You can see everything under it as it overlooks the whole Upper-Class Level of the bunker. After ten minutes of stepping up the glass staircase, we went straight to the glass elevator that was exclusive only for the officials of this place, up to Sector two.
"I just found out that this bunker is made of Five Sectors," Timothy explained as we ascended to the floor level of all officials of Zone Four. He smiled at me and gazed back at the metallic wall of this place, making it the safest place against any kind of bomb and especially, the Creepers. "The first sector was for all the local officials of Zone four. Second to Fourth is the faction from Upper-Class, Middle-Class, and Lower-Class residents of Zone Four or what they called Basil, and then the last was for prisoners of this place."
"Wow," Li exclaimed in a sarcastic tone, snickering. "That's really a brilliant plan. If the Creepers would miraculously enter this facility, the last to be eaten alive would be the prisoners."
"Li!" I scolded him and he was startled by my voice as if he was scared of me.
"What? I am just stating a fact." He complained and pouted his lips like a teenage girl.
"He"s right," Jayson agreed with Li which surprised me. Although Li is a very temperamental guy who complains a lot, I can't hide the fact that he"s the smartest among us and he talks a lot of sense even though he"s sarcastic about it.
And I admire Jayson's tolerance of Li's rough attitude. He"s really a kind and gentle guy.
"Why is it designed like this, Timothy? That's strange." I asked, confused. The rapid, smooth movement of the elevator made my stomach uneasy and I needed to divert my mind into something before I found myself retching in front of everyone here. Eating breakfast early in the morning and getting into this Glass Elevator was not a great idea to do.
Timothy's just smiled and then cleared his throat. "This bunker was deliberately planned, guys. They have a complete security system here that every Sector of the bunker will go into full lockdown and nothing could ever penetrate this hard, thick metal wall even a nuclear fusion bomb." He explained, trying to look as composed as he could.
It seemed he was too obsessed with making people respect him because of his status but for me, he doesn't actually have to be too stiff like that. We've been through a lot and we have seen each other's worst. For me, we're like a family because we always make each other safe.
"So they have this kind of Self lockdown System when the Vault Door detects that an infected person entered the place. That's actually amazing, Timothy. I wonder if it's also smoke-proof. Remember when we got out of the airport and a purple mist surrounded the place? I feel like it was actually the virus itself. The virus will take over your body once you inhale that thing." I informed Timothy, giving him a new problem to solve again.
"That's why we need you to talk to the ambassador. No one can explain to them the terror of what had happened and what they should do to prevent the enemies from infiltrating this bunker. Zone four is the target of Scarlet Tundra now. We can't tell the residents in Upper-Level but there's already a war going on outside and we had no choice but to recruit people, fifteen years old and above, to join the army from the middle-class sector down the lower class." Timothy spoke, his voice was grave while rubbing his chin, thinking deeply.
So that explains the anxious teenagers we saw in the interrogation room. They must have interviewed for their skill backgrounds and tested and went through physical exams.
"Why are they only recruiting young people in the mid and lower class? That's very unfair for these people!" I asked, upset and confused. I felt a heavy feeling on my chest. Why do rich people always have the privilege to not include doing the risky stuff?!
"It's because they are rich, Harriet. They can buy their way out in any mandatory law this bunker would issue to their people. I wish they could buy their way out of hell too though." Li snorted and grimaced, feeling disgusted by the self-centeredness of the people in the Upper-level.
Timothy's face suddenly went uncomfortable by Li's spilled emotion and cleared his throat.
Mona gently pushed Li's shoulder to apologize and Li lowered his head feeling a little embarrassed. "Oh, yeah I forgot you're also one of them."
I narrowed my eyes on him and just shook my head at his attitude and for being too insensitive.
The elevator stopped in front of a white lobby that at first, you would think was an empty hospital waiting area. Just like the Second level of this bunker where the Upper-class people stay, the whole lobby was white and smelled disinfectant. The white illuminations from recessed lighting and the dim area where the bulbs must have busted made the area look a little creepy and disturbing. The silence in this place was deafening. I wonder why no workers or any soldiers were walking in here since it's just eight in the morning. I was expecting this place to be busy since all the transactions and office loads were held here. What happened?
"Why is it so quiet in here?" Jayson asked, puzzled by the strangeness of the scene. All of us stepped outside the elevator and walked into the lobby. A wide door in front of us slid open and made us all startled.
"You're finally here, sir Timothy. And oh, it's them?" said the girl who was about my height, her hair was colored pinkish and her eyes were so round, her blue eyes were so bright that I mistook her for an Android.
"Yes, Silvy. It's them. Is Ambassador Colton already available in his office?" Timothy asked and smiled at the woman politely.
"Yes, of course, he"s available, sir Flitzenberg. He"s been waiting for you." Silvy's eyes fluttered on him and smiled flirtily which made me want to roll my eyes at her. It was clear she likes Timothy. Either him or his money, I don't know.
"Just Timothy," Timothy answered her and smiled amusingly as if he"s enjoying her flirty stare at him.
"Okay, Sir Just Timothy, follow me then." She replied and winked at him. Her super-fitting red office attire and skimpy skirt made her more like a prostitute than a secretary.
Jayson elbowed Timothy on his ribs teasingly about the girl and we followed her, her hips swaying left to right and there was an irritating feeling inside me, an urge that I wanted to kick her meaty *ss, sending her sprawling on the floor.
But I won't of course. I don't want to make any hassle on Timothy's part and give him more trouble here.
She led us into that wide double door and a small office was there. It must be Silvy's working space and it was so tidy and clean and very organized. There hung pretty paintings of flowers and photos of people that I think are her family. She's not bad as a secretary though, I just don't feel I like her for being too flirty.
Or maybe I'm too insecure?
Of course not!
On the right side of her office is a wooden door with a golden metal plate with a name carved AMB E. Y. Colton". Sylvia pushed a button on the panel beside the door and announced to the Ambassador that we were finally here and were ready to speak to him.
"Let them in." The deep voice from the speaker spoke.
Unlike the automated doors in this whole bunker that slides when it opens, the door of the Ambassador's office seemed traditional and old and Silvy had to push it open for us.
When the door opened, a wide spacious room amazed us all, well, except for Timothy because he has been here before. The wide wall was an aquarium of various fishes that I never thought could be possible to put in here. There were also cozy couches, decorations, and elegant paintings inside the room that made it more comfortable to stay in, especially since the situation outside the bunker was getting worse. He must put these things together to stay sane despite the crazy disasters that were happening in Zone four.
"Welcome! Oh, Timothy. I'm glad you brought them here."
There was a bad feeling that emerged from my chest when I saw the old man.
