Chapter 65 The Cabin in the Dead Woods
"We have to make a stop. I"m starting to feel like the acid on my stomach is melting my stomach itself. I"m starving to death! Are you guys not hungry yet?" Li cried, as he complained several times even though we had already told him we'll make a stop when we see a building or any shelter that we could hide. We can't just pull over and expose ourselves in the middle of flat land without anything in the surrounding to obscure us.
"We're starving too, Li. We just need a safe place to pull over." Jayson explained. He's the one in charge of the driving again, his eyes focused on the road but I could see he's also distracted by the hunger he's trying to ignore. All of our faces looked so irritated and annoyed that none of us wanted to say a thing except Li who's getting into our nerves already.
The bad thing is, the road seems long and there's no building or a small town on our way where we could somehow take shelter and hide from people or Creepers that might attract our presence. Roanie's plan of making food so we could travel straight to the border didn't happen because of the unexpected event where the gangster Assassins that are looking for Jayson suddenly appeared in that place and we have no option but to flee without being prepared for our next journey.
Someone's stomach groaned and Roanie moaned in discomfort from her stomach. Jayson sighs and stops the car in the middle of the road, under the scorching heat of the sun.
"Alright. Maybe we can just grab some crackers at the back and some bottled water just to pass this hunger and then we'll get to eat properly when we find a safe place." Jayson suggested and I couldn't agree more because I'm also starving to death.
No matter how much we want to open cans of something meaty, we can't because we have to cook it so instead consuming a can for each of us, we could only use half of it to cook as soup or stew.
Roanie and I moved quickly and took a can of Crackers from the back of the car and some bottled water to distribute it to everyone. We still have enough for three weeks' supply if we're careful about it.
Li and the others took five for each of them and Mona took three. I gave her two more but she refused because she knows we have to save some for the remaining days that will come. We're still not sure if we could resupply when we travel to Zone twenty eight which will take us almost half a month and if we survive with all just our supplies.
Jayson continued driving again but I noticed he looked tired so I asked Li to turn over the driving to him. Of course, Jayson said he's ok but he's clearly not. He's already exhausted and the heat makes and the hunger makes it worse.
The five crackers we got for each other didn't even last an hour or two and we all felt hungry again. Good thing after three hours of searching for a place where we could stop, we found a small house made of wood. It's like a cabin though, in the middle of tall bald trees where their leaves are almost gone, and they look like they're all going to wither. But it's better than staying in the middle of the empty road which will make anyone suspicious to find a car parked on the side. Second, it would be so impossible for us to sleep inside a cramped car. We never want to have stiff necks and aching muscles when we wake up from sleep.
Li parked the car behind the dead-looking trees. It's almost dark and what we only had from morning until now is water and five pieces of crackers. I stepped out of the passenger side and something cracked beneath my shoes. When I lifted my leg to look at what it was, I shuddered to see bones crushed on the ground. It seemed the corpse had been in here for too long that even its bones got brittle by the weather.
"I don't feel good being in this place. It looks spooky and eerie." Timothy commented on the place as they all got out of the car, scanning the wooden house.
The headlight of the car made it look more spooky, the kind that you see in horror movies where psychotic murderers or mutated hickies suddenly appeared and killed people one by one in a gruesome manner. The air is getting colder now and we all grabbed our jackets to keep ourselves warm, as Jayson stepped beside me and nodded, wanting me to go with him to check inside the cabin.
"I don't hear anything though and this place is pretty well secluded. I don't think we'll see any threat here." Jayson whispered but there is a gun on his hand ready if anything bad happened.
I walk behind him, in one hand a gun and the other, a flashlight. Our steps are sure but slow, as we light the inside of the cabin, seeing nothing but some dusty wooden furniture and curtains on the open windows. It seems that the place is safe but I don't know why there's a human bone that I stepped on when I got out of the car. It made me wonder if maybe that's the owner of this cabin who died because of the heat or because it got stuck in this place and died of starvation.
I don't see any vehicle in this place and that means he didn't have any means to leave here or get help from anyone. I feel bad for that person even though I didn't meet him.
"Guys! The place is clear! Just get the equipment inside and Roanie, please make something that could satisfy our hunger," Jayson pleaded with her and she suddenly stood straight as if she got nervous when he mentioned her name.
"Sure!" She exclaimed and a little loud that made us all cringed and hushed her. She smiled awkwardly at us and apologized as she worked on her menu for tonight.
I helped them all set our beds and blankets inside the cabin when we all heard something rustling outside. Then there were whispers that made me and the others more wary.
We are not alone here.
