Chapter 54 The New Member
"Let's go!"
Jayson hissed at all of us, running first then I came second and all of us lined, making sure everyone was safe and protected, especially Li and Mona. He waved for us to keep hurrying and not to slow down as we both took down the Creepers one by one using a pistol with a suppressor.
It's actually working. The other Creepers don't get bothered by the sound because the wind is a little too strong today and its swooshing noise covers the noise of the gun. My hands are still trembling and my heartbeat is so fast on my chest that I cannot focus well and missed at some target where Jayson quickly backs me up. At every shot he makes, he looks at me with worried eyes and I just apologize to him over and over until we reach the long highway where we will get very exposed to the Creepers.
Roanie is really good at guns. She shot some between the eyes that Timothy couldn't help but stare at her with admiration as we all hid against the corner of a building, between the stacked sacks of cements and the wall. Jayson grabbed my hand and pulled me down with him, his face so close to me. I didn't realize my lips were also quivering. What is happening to me?
"What's wrong, Cassy. Is there something bothering you? You can't handle a gun like this..." Jayson whispered at me in a worried tone as he cupped my face. The others are looking around the area, making sure that any Creepers didn't notice us.
"I-I'm fine. I will be alright. It's just... I can't understand why I feel so bothered about something. I'll explain about it later." I told Jayson with apology and bit my lower lip shorty, wetting it before I talked again. "Let's just focus on how we're going to get past this wide road. We have to run fast and not look back."
"Yeah. I'm sorry I just thought there's something going on with you. I just got worried because it's the first time you missed something like that," he explained and smiled at me, trying to encourage me with his grin. "Do you want to lead in front? I'll support you in the back just so you would feel safe."
I smiled at him. Jayson really knows what things could make me comfortable. "Sure. I prefer it that way."
"Okay, let's proceed then."
"Be careful, Cassy." Hissed Timothy.
"Sure."
With Jayson's nod, I made my eyes more sensitive from anything that was moving around me and looked from left to right with my hand gripping the gun tightly. The sun is getting down and I could hear strange noises from above. When I looked up to see them, I saw bats hovering above us, and then I noticed the corpse-eating birds coming into this place already.
The Creepers look like they're all distracted by the noise from the bats and they are all looking restless and irritated that they are all starting to attack each other, pushing and jumping the one that is near them.
It's good timing! Even Jayson grinned at me and Roanie looked so curious at what was happening to the monsters.
With a wave, I ran first and then they followed. The gun was ready in my hand as I fire at the ones that got distracted by our movement and then all four of us fired at each of them, clearing our way towards the area where we parked and hid our car.
The wind was getting a little harsh as my hair blew in front of my face, making me a little perplexed because some of it got stuck on my eye and I stopped from walking which made Jayson alarmed.
"Harriet!"
"I-Im sorry my eyes!"
"It's ok, Harriet, we got you!" Timothy tried to lower his voice as he shot at the Creepers that got near our group. Both Mona and Li are in the middle, carrying the ammunition and some weapons, guarding it with their life as we protect them. The air in this City is getting rancid with the stench of death as the wind passes through the piled corpses just across the street. It's getting darker and we have to move fast.
I quickly brushed the hairs out of my face with my fingers and looked around me... Jayson is holding me by my arm so I could keep up with them. Why am I being a klutz right now?!
With quick feet running towards the narrow alley, Timothy and Roanie volunteered to watch on the opening and shoot every Creeper that came running down towards us. It piled in front of the driveway which will be a little problem because we have to remove them once we the car is moving.
Mona and Li quickly loaded the ammunition on the back of the vehicle and Jayson started turning the engine on as it roared with a little struggle.
"What's wrong? Li asked Jayson and I saw how frustrated Jayson looked as he kept on switching the keys of the car.
"Is it not working anymore?!" I asked him, my brows angled up to my forehead with worry. I see him make an attempt again but the car sounded like a sixty year old grandad coughing it's last breath.
"Oh, goodness! Not now!" Li complained as he tried to check on what Jayson was doing.
"What do you think is the problem?" I ask Li with panic as I heard the repeated gunshots from Roanie and Timothy. The Creepers are going here more than we have expected and the car is broken and we have no idea what to do next!
"This is the moment when I wish I did something differently other than being there with you, guys," Li commented as his breathing became fast with fear, his eyes bulging wide. He's saying that he wishes he stayed and looked for an electric car rather than keeping our hop to this gasoline type.
"There's nothing we could do about it, Li. Just help Jayson make this thing work." I said to him and took the gun to help Timothy and Roanie. They both are exchanging shots as more Creepers come this way. Mona's already trembling, fearing for our lives while Li and Jayson become more busy figuring out what is wrong in the engine.
When I stood together with the two, Timothy looked at me, surprised to see that I joined them to keep the Creepers from getting inside the alley. The still corpses piled in the entrance and there is no way we could clear this path without stepping on the black blood that is coming from the corpses. I grimace in disgust, same as Timothy and Roanie as we three take down the Creepers. The stench of the rotting corpses made me retch and I could see Timothy's face going green as he fight not to vomit while holding a gun.
"What happened, why Jayson's taking so long?" He asks, a little worried that the Creepers are advancing as seconds pass. "We can't hold all these monsters for too long! We're wasting too many bullets!"
"I know, there's something going on with the car. The engine won't turn on and Jason and Li have to fix it. We just have to give them a little bit of time." I answered him as I focused my aim on the Creepers. I was expecting for the street lights to light the roads automatically but I remember the power in this whole city is down and we have to rely on our sharp eyesight.
We all hear the engine sputter behind us as Li and Jayson are giving their best to fix it. Mona helped them by giving them the tools they need as they work on it, trying to revive the dying engine.
C'mon, Li, Jayson... fix it faster please!
Timothy's gun gave out a clicking sound "I'm out!" He said to us, his hands trembling as he reloaded. Cold sweats formed on his forehead, making me feel the tension in the air as the howls and screams of the Creepers filled out my ears.
Then, to our relief, we heard the engine come back to life, roaring behind us as Li almost yelled in joy. Roanie and Timothy backed off as they shot the Creepers still coming and piling in front of us. I remained standing on my spot as they stepped back and when they were near the car enough to get inside of it, I quickly ran as the Creepers jumped, trying to catch and grab me from my shoulder.
Good thing I am fast. I can't afford for any of these monsters to make even a single scratch on me because as far as I know, Roanie's mom was only scratched by these creatures and she suddenly turned to one of them in just a few hours.
With swift movement, I went inside the car and sat on the passenger side. Jayson looked at me with confidence and he grinned as he maneuvered the car towards the other path of the alley because the way that we are supposed to use is already blocked with piled corpses.
"Buckle up everyone! I can't guarantee you a safe ride while there are Creepers around us!" Jayson yelled and I quickly pulled the seatbelt and cling to it for my dear life.
