Chapter 50 Rescue Mission

"Who"s that person behind you?"
I stare at Jayson who looks like he doesn"t know how to explain everything that had happened while they were all gone. Timothy looks like he is also confused too so I took a step forward toward them and look at the girl. She"s about two inches taller than me though but she looks like she"s younger than me and I felt a little embarrassed for being too small for my age.
The girl has big, brown eyes, she"s tan and her skin looks so pretty which made me a bit suspicious. She"s clean, her hair is dark brown and she"s wearing a yellow dress which stands out and is a bad idea to wear. Good thing we saw her first before any bad guy had seen her here. She hid behind Timothy, her hands gripping the sleeve of his shirt. Her eyes are wide
"Where did you find her? I ask Timothy and he looks at Jayson, asking him to answer my question. "What? Is there something bad that happened while you were somewhere?"
"Actually no. But the place we went was swiped clean and whoah!" Jayson yelped as he saw all the goods that were stacked inside the car. "Where did you get all of these?!"
Li crossed his arms on his chest and haughtily looked at the two with a triumphant smile on his face as if what we did was a contest on who would find the most supplies. "Hah! We beat you guys!"
"What? Nobody had mentioned we"re competing for it," Timothy complained, wincing as if not accepting that Li managed to beat him.
"Where are you from? Why are you in this place all alone?" I ask the girl and she looks down at me which is a little bit humiliating. I saw Li suppressing a laugh.
I gave him a sharp look in the corner of my eyes, though and he pretended that he was busy preparing the induction for tonight"s use for cooking.
The girl fidgets on her fingers, not looking at me directly. It"s like she"s scared or shy? I hope I didn"t scare her when I squinted at Li, though.
"She doesn"t talk to anyone. Only Timothy." Jayson whispered to me as soon as he got so close to me. I feel like I am going to blush when I feel his breath against my cheek but I can"t let anyone think that I am a love junkie girl. It will only stain my reputation on them.
"Is it true, Tim? How did you see her? Was she alone?" I ask the questions one by one. I don"t know why but I have a bad feeling about it and it worries me. For her to be stuck here alone, I wonder if this City has just been recently attacked. But the corpses lying on the street already look green and I estimate that it"s been over a week or two.
"She isn"t alone though. She just went here with us because we need to get Mona. She"s with her mother." Timothy answered. "We saw both of them hiding while we"re looking for some good stuff at every apartment in the building. They are staying in one of the rooms there and her mother looks really sick."
I glance at Mona. When she heard about it, she quickly took her things, willing to help the girl.
"What"s your name?"
"Her name is—"
I scoff at Timothy, trying to silence him, "I am talking to her, Tim."
"I-I"m Roanie. My mother and I were stuck in this place and are lucky we survived the attack. But..." Her eyes started to get wet with tears and I had the urge to hold her arm to calm her but I couldn't. I might only scare her if I did.
"What shall we do then?" Timothy asked, looking a little concerned about the girl. I"m happy to see how kind and gentle he is. He really changed a lot since I first saw him at the airport. I guess the experiences we had and the horrible things he had witnessed made Timothy"s heart become so concerned for the people around him. "We can"t just leave them here and wait for the Creepers to reach this place."
I look at Jayson and he nodded at me, "We saw her mother. We have to go back there with Mona."
"Okay," I answered but there was still a strange feeling in my chest. "Let"s just gather our weapons in case something happens. We have to always make sure we can fight back. We"re not sure if they are just raiders or Melvin"s men or the Scarlet Tundra themselves."
"Don"t talk like that, please? You"re scaring me..." Li commented, his face looks like the end of the world already. He helped Mona take her stuff from the car and closed the hood. Mona took a bat and gave it to Li while she took her stuff from him. Li looks at her ridiculously "You want me to fight? You know I can"t even swing a bat like this properly."
Mona lifted her arms and flexed her nonexisting biceps like she is telling Li he is strong and he can do it. I smiled as I watched them. She"s so cute with her black apple-cut hair, her small face, and chinky eyes. Her smile gave us all a light feeling in our chest and Li couldn"t help but just smile at her too. He imitated her, making her see his non-existing biceps too and we all laughed together with voices as low as we could.
I glanced at the girl behind Timothy and she smiled too. She looks so young and her eyes portray innocence while watching my friends bickering with each other. I step in front of her and she smiles immediately as if she"s scared I might do something to her. But I gave her the gentlest expression on my face.
"You will be ok. We won"t hurt you. We are good people, Roanie. We will help you and your mother, I promise." I assured her and she looked at me as if trying her hardest not to get intimidated by me. She nodded her head and gave me a shy smile.
After I gave her a small smile, I stretched my arms upward and took the bat that is propped on the side of the car. I wish we had at least a rifle or a shotgun though but I guess I can deal with this yet.
"So where is this place?" I ask them.
