Chapter 36 Get away car
I feel like I stop my breathing as I watch.
Jayson is almost at the car, crouching as he carefully sneaks, not wanting the Creeper to notice him until he's positioned to slash its head off.
I didn't realize I was gripping Timothy's hand too tight out of fear for Jayson's life, scared that my premonition is right. We heard slashes of meat and spurting of liquid as Jayson appeared again, waving his hands on us, signaling that it's all safe for us to get out of the shrubs, and ran towards the car.
We ran as fast as we could and when we reached the spot, all of us couldn't believe what we saw...
Li retched noisily on the front wheel of the car and Timothy covered his mouth, looking sick. Mona closed her eyes and I just stared, right there... on Col. Morgan's devoured body. Parts of his neck are missing, his insides were raked open. His companion was nowhere to be found. It must have fled somewhere inside the forest upon seeing his Morgan being feasted by the Creepers.
I stepped back from the corpse and looked frustratingly up to the sky. My eyes are teary with anger and hate towards the people who created this evil virus. I wonder if there's a deeper part of hell reserved only for them.
Li cried after he vomited all the food that remained on his stomach. He must be feeling weak after that long-running and our climb up a steep hill just to get here. Timothy stared blankly for minutes, couldn't believe that all of the soldiers who accompanied us had died and all five of us again left.
"Seriously. I wonder who jinxes us because when we always attempt to travel outside, only five of us survive." Timothy kicked in the air, frustrated about our new situation.
Jayson took Col. Morgan's weapons and all the things on his body that could help us against the Creepers. He got five explosives, a long gun, and two pistols.
"Let's see how we can make this thing work," Jayson said in an angry and morbid tone, his eyes are emotionless and his lips are in a straight line. "We have no time to mourn for the dead. We have to keep moving and find the armored mobile.
"Can we at least bury him?" Timothy pleaded with Jayson but Jayson ignored him and Timothy got upset with his behavior. He pulled Jayson on the neckline of his shirt and looked at his face angrily. "Hey! What's wrong with you?! Can we at least respect the man and give him a decent grave? Don't you owe him that much to take us as far as here?!"
Mona and I got alarmed by the quarrel of the two and I pulled Timothy from Jayson with all my strength because when I tugged his shoulder, he didn't budge.
"Stop it, Timothy!" I hissed at him, my eyes were teary. I refused to look at the corpse of Col. Morgan because if I do, my stomach will not handle it anymore. "Jayson's right. We can't stay here longer anymore. We have to go and report to others in the spot that was planned."
Jayson's eyes became so sad that I couldn't take those emotions and my tears started flowing down my cheeks. He embraced me as my shoulders shook from my sobs, the pain and guilt are too much to bear anymore...
"We'll be okay, Harriet. I promise I'll do my best to protect you..." Jayson murmured to my ears and held both of my cheeks. "We will be ok."
"Hey, only Harriet?" Li complained, holding his stomach and grimacing.
The rest of us rolled our eyes on Li, even Mona.
We all pulled Col. Morgan's body on the side of the road. We didn't know how heavy he was until all of us dragged him under the bushes.
"So..." Timothy asked, sweating and panting. "Who could hack the system operator of that vehicle?"
"No system operator to hack," Jayson said, a confident smile on his face, and threw a set of keys in the air.
All our faces lit when we saw the keys to the car. It's a vintage one! It's a rare situation to find such a kind of car like that in the middle of nowhere!
"That's really cool Jay—"
Timothy's words were not finished because a Creeper leaped from behind the bushes near, where we hid Col. Morgan's body but Jayson's reflex was faster. He quickly gave the Creeper a powerful kick on its gut and it flew back to where it appeared. Li and the rest of us screamed in surprise and ran to the car as fast as we could.
Howls and Screams filled the air again as we all cram inside the car. It has a smaller space than Timothy's car that we used when we escaped from the airport. Jayson quickly inserted the key and tried to revive the engine but he failed on the first and second tries.
The Creepers ran towards us and banged their bodies against the sides of the vehicle.
"Why do I feel like it's a kind of a déjà vu?!" Li cried as he watch the rotting faces of the Creepers in terror. One of them is banging its head on the window and I was so scared that it might break the glass and grab any of us!
"JAYSON! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Timothy screamed in fear as the window made a small crack already, three Creepers glaring at us and banging the roof of and hood of the car.
"Shut up! I am trying! Just pray this car's battery is still working!!" Jayson screamed back, trying to concentrate on the ignition of the car. The car gave a whine and then it turned silent again.
I am starting to get worried so I took one of the guns from him but he stopped me.
"Wait!" he cried and three more attempts made the engine sputter and reverberated. Jason kicked on the gas and the tires screeched, rolling on the road and leaving the three Creepers howling and screaming, their arms stretched towards us.
Li gave a loud exhale as both of his hands were behind his head, looking relieved. Timothy's face was still serious as he looked back to the place where we left Col. Morgan's body. Not too long, in the rearview mirror of the car, I saw his corpse rise from the bushes.
Timothy had seen it too and I don't know how I could make him feel better, knowing Col. Morgan is now one of the Creepers. We're just lucky we didn't witness his turning because it would be torture to us to see his destroyed body, walking and howling.
"I'm so sorry, Timothy," I said sadly to him. I thought he was going to cry but he didn't. He gave me a brave and reassuring smile as Jason drove far from another nightmare that we survived.
Mona patted my shoulder with her fingers and did hand signs to me. I looked at Li to help me translate it and he said "Do you have an idea where our next destination is?"
"Ohh... I have no idea actually...."
