Chapter 47 Resupplying
"It feels like another deja vu, right?"
As we enter another City, the center of business in Zone Twenty-three, it feels like the same day when we entered the city of Zone four. The same eerie silence, the swishing sound of the wind, corpses piled everywhere, I feel like humanity is getting worse at destroying their own kind, willing to kill and annihilate those who oppose their ideology. Their own selfish plan that only themselves could benefit.
Jayson drove slowly as the car passed from building to building, keeping ourselves in full alert from the danger of any Creeper that might come our way. But this part of the city is clean of Creepers, and only destroyed facilities made us worry because they looked like some people had looted the place already and bombed it after.
And that means we might meet either Melvin's men or the rebels, the Scarlet Tundra.
"We have to be careful. We should explore the place on foot and look for things, especially food and clean water, guys. We cannot last another day without eating anything." I told them after Jayson parked the car in a hidden alley and covered it with a toothpaste ad tarpaulin.
"Should we separate? I'm a little unconfident about exploring this place. I have a bad feeling about it. I don't like the silence here." Li said, both eyebrows angled upward as his fingers fidget on the hem of his shirt. Mona held his arm and he smiled, trying to make her feel that he's ok when he's obviously freaking out.
"We have to, Li. Sorry. All of us can't be in the same place. Mona, is it ok if you look for the car? It's the safest place for you." Jayson asked Mona, and she opened her mouth slightly, which made me think she's going to say something but I remember that she cannot talk and I suddenly got curious what Mona's voice sounds like if she's able to talk again.
I wonder why the Doctor in the bunker of Zone four didn't mend her voice box or anything that stops her from being able to speak. I have to ask Dr. Peterson about and maybe he could figure out how to make Mona talk again.
"I'll go with Timothy. Li, you go with Harriet."
"WHAT!?" Li and Timothy hissed at him at the same time again that it's getting more funny seeing them like that. Their faces are both looking ridiculous, hating about Jayson's decision on who's going with who.
"Can't I just go with you? I'm scared of being alone with her, please!" Li whispered to Jayson, begging him, his forehead suddenly beaded in sweat, looking scared and nervous about it.
I narrowed my eyes on him, "You know I can hear you, Li. That somehow hurts my feelings, you know?" I told him, pouting my lip a little and pretending like I'm sulking from what he told Jayson. Li scratched his head, feeling sorry about it and I smiled at him playfully like I'm just making fun out of it. "It's fine, Li."
He looked at me a little embarrassed about what he had said and gave me an apologetic look. "It's really embarrassing but ok, I'll go with Harriet," he said a little unhappy about it and I smiled at him with my eyes making a little threatening because I know he's scared when I'm mad.
Mona patted on the car gently, making a soft noise to get our attention and she made a hand sign on me. I looked at Li to translate it and he said in a flat annoyed tone, "She says don't give me a heart attack."
I smiled and chuckled at Mona, "It's fine Mona, I will be gentle on him" and we both chuckled, making Li roll his eyes.
Timothy looked unhappy about being partnered with Jayson too but it seems like Jayson never mind about it. I was even surprised that he picked Timothy over me. Maybe he's just trying to not make things too obvious between us and he knows we both can defend Li and Timothy if something bad happens.
All of us took something that we could use in case there is something or someone hostile that attacks us during our quest to find food and water in this place. Jayson still has his military blade while I took a bat and so is Li and Timothy because that's what is available for us now to use. I am hoping we could get weapons during our search but I doubt we could since this place was first looted by humans not Creepers. They will surely take everything, especially goods and weapons.
I gave Mona a short hug before we left her in the car and Jayson nodded at me, saying silent words that said I should take care and not intimidate Li as often as I could. I smiled at him, though and wished to say be careful of Timothy but it seems like he's in his worst mood today. His face looks so annoyed that it made me worry if those two will be alright.
Me and Li crouched in a sneaking manner, our rubber shoes silent against the concrete pavement towards a huge department store which is filled with different cars in the parking lot. I could see the racks inside are almost empty but we should try and look for it in case we're lucky enough to find anything left that is still good for us to use.
I moved first and Li is looking out behind me, making sure that nothing suspicious is looking or following us. I signaled him to quicken his pace and he hastily ran as we entered the exit door of the building, checking every boutiques and shops inside.
We saw shoes and apparel shops and me and Li quickly took clean clothes from the rack that we thought would fit on each of us. I also took caps and some jackets in case the nights would get too cold for us and went to a boutique where we saw blankets and other kitchen stuff that we could use and won't take too much space at the back of the car.
"Look Harriet! The grocery still has goods left on them, oh my god, we're all saved!!!"
