Chapter 78 Party Crashers
"You guys ready?"
We all nodded at Jayson who is now positioned on the seat of the car. He looked at me, his eyes, despite the fear and uncertainty, are still on fire after the blissful moment we had when he proposed to me. I could feel the ring on my finger as he looked at me meaningfully, forcing himself not to smile at me for it would be inappropriate in front of our friends who look like they are all going to faint at any moment.
Greg, who is still pale as a paper looked at Jayson, the expression on his face looking miserable for the reason that he couldn"t handle managing the driving and taking the responsibility of our lives to his shoulders. Jayson just nodded at him as if saying there is nothing he should worry about and he got it.
We are all confident of Jayson"s driving skills and before he had sat on the driver"s side, Greg had already taught him everything about the controls and how maneuvering works in the car despite its heaviness. Jayson is a fast learner and even though he"s a guy that didn"t go to college, he has this photographic memory that anyone would admire. Even Greg is amazed at how fast Jayson got it when he used to study it in a span of two months.
"You all better hang on tight guys." Jayson hissed and then he started the engine, making it roar so loud in the middle of the night, breaking the silence as it jolted forward, almost sending us flying backward when Jayson hit the accelerator into full speed.
My adrenaline quickly rose to my head when the car started running towards the camp, and we saw a few men coming out of their tent, baffled and terrified by the loud noise of the car. The road is rough and bumpy and despite that Jayson knows this is a camp of the bandits that almost wiped out the population of the Arcania, he still evaded the tents, thinking there might be children or women inside of them.
Then the first strike of bullets hit the body of the armored car, thankfully that it is bulletproof enough that it doesn"t penetrate the walls or even the glass windows.
"Oh god! We are all going to die!" Li exclaimed as he heard the sound of the bullet strike the metallic body of the car. I admit, even though we know this thing is impenetrable, there is still this fear in us that there might be a chance that one of these bullets might accidentally pierce through the wall and hit one of us dead.
But Jayson is good at making an escape route. He barges into the middle of the tents where their men are resting so they would be careful not to fire bullets, for they might shoot one of their fellow men. We could hear screams outside and there were still a few who shot at us but not as bad as we came in for the first minute.
With heavy breathe and my hand holding on to a handle so tight my knuckles and palm turned white, I look at my back to check for the others and they are all sitting in the middle of the car, and just like me, our bodies are protected with a bullet-proof vest from the armory of this car. We all didn"t bother to fight back and just concentrated on hanging tight to whatever we could hold on to. Greg is just across me, crouched and his thin arms holding tightly on the handlebar just like I am. Li was protecting Mona, putting his hand on her head to prevent her from bumping on anything hard, especially the long bench that is just on her side. As they are both sitting on their knees with their heads low, terrified by the sound of the bullets deflected by the thick armor of the car.
Timothy and Roanie did the same. They are sitting on the floor side by side, Timothy holding Roanie so she won"t get thrown away when the car swerves from left to right, just like Jayson did when we were always being chased by the Creepers. But this time, we are not being chased by the dead but by the living beings who have great hatred against the people of Arcania. And especially, the privileged ones like us who were from the bunkers.
"Timothy! Are you alright?!" I screamed at him in the middle of the deafening sound of raining bullets outside. He wanted to lift his head to look at me but he was too scared by the crackling and whistling sound of the ricocheted gunshots.
"W-we"re ok!" He yelled, trying to top his voice over the noise, and then I turned to look at Jayson in the cockpit alone, his face serious and glaring on the front of the car, trying to see clear of the way towards the bunker. His green eyes are fiercely glinting against the spotlight of the enemies for the purpose of making us all visible to them and then he hits the accelerator once more, making us all scream in fear as he swerves on the right again, trying to get rid of the spotlight.
"F*ck! I don"t want to die yet! I haven"t told Mona I love her yet!" Li screamed out loud in terror that made us all look at him in shock and silence, and Mona, who was baffled above us all, stared at Li"s face. It seems like he"s also in shock that he had accidentally said it out loud but before he could even explain to her, the car swerved again to the other side, making Timothy roll comically down the rear.
"F*ck! We"re not going to die with the bullets! We"re going to die with a cracked skull!" Timothy complained, which, if we were in a different circumstance, would make me laugh my lungs out.
"Are you all still alive out there?!" Jayson yelled at all of us which made Timothy more annoyed as he crawled back towards the others. I would love to yell at him to not talk anymore but he is smiling like he"s enjoying what he"s doing. I just shut my mouth and let him do his thing until he could get us all out of this place.
"Oh, god..." because I couldn"t even feel my hand when I released it from gripping too tightly on the handlebar, and I switched my other hand so I won"t get thrown when Jayson avoids something again and sends us all flying from side to side of the car. I closed and opened my hand to relieve it from spasm and pain and then my eyes caught Greg, his face looking green already.
"Greg?!"
"I think I need to—"
"Hey! Hey!"
To save everyone from bathing in the thing that would surely make the others curse Greg until his last breath, Greg quickly moved to his feet, and with quick feet, he run between Timothy and Li who are protecting the two girls, and then retched at the rear part of the car, his vomit scattered on the floor.
Li looks like he"s going to throw up upon hearing and seeing Greg"s vomit but he tries to stop it as much as he could because it's obvious he does want to look tough in front of Mona.
I just wince as Greg keeps on retching and looks at Jayson. He clicked some buttons on the panel and then the holographic map appeared, letting him see our real-time distance from the outer facility of the bunker which is protected by a thick vault-like door, a very secured door to ward off the bandits from entering the facility.
I saw the red dots chasing us from behind as the bullets kept raining on us. We"re almost at the boundary of the bunker! We will make it!
Jayson took the radio from the panel and clicked on something to it. "Bunker twenty-eight, this is Jayson from bunker four, requesting to open the vault of the facility now. I repeat. Open the vault facility now. We have the son of Mr. Flitzenberg, Timothy Flitzenberg. We are the people who were sent here by bunker four. Open the Vault door! Now!"
No one had answered.
Both Jayson and I"s faces went terrified when he got no answer from his distress call. The only sound that came from it was the static noise coming from the choppy signal, so Jayson had no choice but to focus on evading the bandits as fast as possible.
We were almost on the border of the Vault when all of us were almost deafened by the incredible sound of an explosion, just an inch from my side which made my ears ring. Then after the terrible sound, Jayson"s curses became audible in my ear and I couldn"t even focus on what was going on already.
"JAYSON! WHAT"S GOING ON?!"
"THEY ARE AIMING BAZOOKA AT US! HOLD ON TIGHT!"
But before the enemy could even release another batch of their explosives, something moved from up the Vault Gate, and then all of a sudden, when we reached the borders of the facility, a high caliber machine gun fired on the bandits, killing those who were in range.
Jayson stopped abruptly as we watched how the machine gun turrets wiped out all the ones that stepped into the borders of the bunker.
