Chapter 48 The Universe's Blessings
"I'll go. You keep on checking what things we could carry ok?" I asked Li and he nodded at me, the life on his face came back once he knew we're going to eat good food later. His smile is like a sign of how to me that there is still something we could do despite all the unfortunate events that happened to us during our encounter with Melvin and the cast-outs.
With fast feet, I went through aisle to aisle looking for any canned goods. I suddenly craved for fruits but any perishables were already rotten on their racks, especially fruits and vegetables. I felt sad when I saw the apples and oranges, the memory of their fresh taste made my mouth water.
So I just went to the coolers, hoping there are still bottles of water of juice and I'm lucky to see 3 cans of orange soda, 6 bottles one liter of water and a dozen of apple flavored canned beer!
I grabbed the nearby basket and stacked them all inside of it, and then decided to wander around the grocery store more, and saw some bags of chips and canned fruits and meat along the aisles. I also took every sauce and condiments I saw in case we got to a place where we could hunt animals for food. We just have to pray that there are still games that haven't yet been affected by the virus.
Li, upon thinking that his task was already complete, ran towards me silently, all the clothes, shoes and blankets and the kitchen wares he took were all placed on a cart just outside the door of the grocery.
He approached me with a smile, the kind that is a little creepy yet I can't blame him because during our way here, we are all dehydrated already and all the fortune we found will make everyone happy. And I know that Li is excited to show all of these to Mona, especially the cute clothes we pick for her.
"I can't believe how lucky we are, Harriet, it's as if the universe is taking care of us!" Li exclaimed and I shushed him because his voice became a little bit louder, scared that we might wake a Creeper somewhere in this place if there is any.
"Yeah, just keep your voice down, Li. We don't want any Creeper to appear from here while we haven't brought all these things back to the car." I whispered to him while putting a huge bottle of shampoo on the basket, and with swift hands, took as many napkins and tissue papers as I could while Li took a bar of soaps and disinfectant alcohol from the racks. He also took some medicines from the medicine section and we worked as fast as we could so we could bring it all back without any worries.
"I thought we were going to die of hunger and thirst. Good thing this place isn't too empty at all. I guess those raiders haven't gone in this place yet and I am thankful they left us the car."
"I guess they are not totally evil after all," I said as I looked for any feminine wash but I couldn't find any so I just went to look for toothpastes and toothbrushes and was happy that there are still plenty of them.
"Are you serious? They almost shatter your skull, Harriet. I think there are no good people out there anymore. This place is already covered in greed and terror and I hope we could see the Military vehicle as soon as we get to the border. I don't wanna stay and wander in this place anymore. I miss the life we have in the bunker."
I look at Li and I can't blame him no matter how annoying he is to always grumble at us whenever he feels uncomfortable about anything. Unlike Timothy and Jayson, Li is a little too organized and too meticulous about things and if only he doesn't show Mona how he cares for her, I wouldn't definitely think he is not straight.
"I can't exactly tell what happened and how and who hit me on the head though. But there is one thing I know for sure." I look at Li and no matter how intimidated he is to me, he still manages to give me a worried look. "He's after the bunkers and we have to tell the military about it."
"But you're the one who gave them information!"
"I know, but we have no choice, right? I guess that's acceptable as an excuse." I answered him, trying to make sense of it. "We have to warn the bunkers about these men. Or else, it will be too late for them because I have no idea what's under the sleeves. I don't know what kind of weapons they have to wage war against the NAG. It can't be their number because there are too few of them. Or maybe they have people from across this continent who were also denied entry into the bunkers..."
"That's bad. Then we really have to meet the soldiers on the border and tell them of these people's agenda." Li said, taking boxes of pancakes while I took bottles of coffee. Mona will surely like the pancakes and Jayson loves coffee so I'm happy we could bring them things that will make them smile. I also took tea for Timothy and some candies that I think are still good to eat.
I think we already had taken enough to last for a month, I chuckled at Li who also smiled so wide, looking satisfied on the things and goods we found. I pushed the cart of groceries while Li had the other stuff. The car isn't too far from here and I think it's ok to bring these carts to the road, knowing that they'll only just make a small nose on the pavement. Besides, they are too heavy to carry.
"I wish we could even take all of these with us though. Do you think we can take a larger vehicle than the one we're using now?"
I shrugged at him and answered, "we can try" and smiled, because I know that hacking a car is just a simple job for him to do.
