CHAPTER 24
She was hurt, mad and angry and she knew Harvey wasn’t the problem but she just had to direct everything at him. She pressed the ground floor button and watched as the door closes. She could see his face, he wasn’t looking so well at all but he should understand too that her heart was aching and if she continues to look at him she would explode.
The valet brought her car and she gave him a tip before she drove off. She drove as fast as she could until she reached Nancy’s home. She was waiting for her outside.
“Are you trying to kill yourself?” she asked her as soon as she got out of the car.
“I wish that was possible but do you have some cigarettes?” Ruby asked.
“No, why do you suddenly want some? I thought you quit,” she asked.
“I did but now I’m craving some. I think I will go mad if I don’t smoke right now,” Ruby confessed.
“You have to tell me what’s going on first before you do all that. Come inside, I’m all home alone,” Nancy said and Ruby followed her inside.
They went straight to the bar, where Nancy poured her a glass of scotch which she just gulped down at once. Nancy didn’t ask but poured another one for her before she joined her.
“So, what exactly is happening? When I left you, you were okay and happy?”
Ruby narrated the whole issue to Nancy who replied by laughing out loud.
“You can’t laugh like this,” Ruby said.
“I knew this was going to happen. You know, even before you two started dating, we were already assuming that something was happening already. So, what makes you think, your family members didn’t see it?”
“I still can’t believe that they can do that so early,” Ruby said.
“I know you are worried and sad. It’s common after all you love him. I think they are doing this to cover up the rumors about your relationships. Will you tell your mother about how you feel for Harvey?”
“I don’t think I can. This will break her heart, I wouldn’t want to see her in an awkward position,” Ruby said.
“You see. Now all you have to do is see what your little brother is thinking and I advise you to stay away for now if you don’t want to get caught,” Nancy advised.
She knew what Nancy was talking about but it was very difficult. She was used to be near him, in his embrace and the thought of him marrying another was just so painful. She just wanted to get drunk and forget about everything but Nancy snatched away her glass.
“You have to drive back home. As much as I would love to have you here, I can’t let you sleep here tonight. If you are not at home then another issue will arise. Let’s face this head on and discuss more at school. Go home, take a nice warm bath and go to bed. Can you do that for me?”
“I will, if you promise to bring me that pie tomorrow,” Ruby said trying to smile.
“I will bring you whatever you want as long as you go and sleep tonight,” Nancy promised.
“Fine, I will go now.”
Nancy escorted Ruby back to her car, at least she wasn’t that drunk yet.
“Drive carefully,” Nancy said as soon as she was settled.
“I will, thanks,” she said and drove off.
When she arrived home, they were not yet back. She removed her clothes and soaked herself into the tub for a while. She put on her night wear and crawled into the bed. She wondered how she was going to sleep that night but after a while she dosed off.
Harvey looked at Ruby who was sleeping in her room. He could tell that she slept crying and that was something he didn’t want. He never thought his parents would do this to him without even asking him.
It came as a surprise to him but it hit Ruby hard. He didn’t know how to explain the situation to her and he knew once she gets angry, it would be very difficult to calm her down.
“Is she sleeping?” Grace asked standing at the door.
He turned his head to look at the woman who gave birth to this woman he loved so much and he nodded.
“Yes, she is,” he said and stood up.
“I guess she was tired. I will see her tomorrow,” Grace said and left.
Harvey followed behind and closed the door. He went this room where he took a cold shower first before retiring to bed.
When he woke up the next day and went downstairs for breakfast Ruby wasn’t there.
“Have you seen my sister?” he asked the chief maid.
“She didn’t have her breakfast today, she said she was in a hurry and left,” she told him and immediately he knew that she was very angry.
“Okay, thank you,” he said and ate his breakfast.
It was going to take a while for her to calm down and it was bad for everyone once she gets in that mood.
He left the house in his car and drove to school. When he arrived he went to look for her in the office but she wasn’t there.
“I can call her if you want,” her secretary said.
“It’s okay, I will come back and look for her again,” he said and left.
Where did she go to this early when lectures haven’t even started yet?
