Chapter 37

With Ashley beside him asking him about the part of Logan that no one had ever seen, Logan decided to start from afresh, when it all started.

"As a werewolf that was just discovering my abilities, the only person stopping me from being me was just myself. I felt my abilities were at their peak, and with hormones running all over, I felt I could touch the sky if I chose to. For that reason, I effortlessly had the pride and strength that made everybody respect and admired me, until it was announced that the next Alpha of the pack won't be hereditary as usual but the strongest werewolf in the whole town will be the leader of the pack. If wishes were horses, beggars will ride."

Logan described to Ashley how he came from a poor family, with a gambler and a drunkard as a father and a mother who solely loved and respected her husband as she tries to shield her children from the lifestyle of their father.

"Why are you always with him and trying to protect him?" Katherine the eldest sister and firstborn in the family once asked her mother.

"Because I knew him when he was a good man."

"And now he isn't, can you just leave him off?"

"A tree does not cut away its root just because it begins to drink water from a river the tree one loathed," this conversation had lived behind the head and mind of Logan, as he wondered what could have changed a man that was known to be brave and strong to be reduced to a mere drunkard. Until on a faithful hot afternoon, Logan had just assisted a woman lift her luggage and crossing one of the busiest roads in the central city.

"Thank you, my son," she had uttered.

"This city deserves a leader like you," I smiled and scoffed.

"I can never be the pack's Alpha in the central city."

"And why not?" The woman reached for a piece of paper in her maroon bag and handed it to me.

"What is this ma'am? Because I do not accept money from people I have helped."

The woman smiled and said. "So gullible of you. This is no money, but it could make you richer than you could ever think of," I moved closer and noticed it was not money but a medium-sized flier that was neatly folded into a hexagonal shape. As I unfolded the flier and read "Do you think you have what it is to be the Alpha of the werewolves in Central city? Come and prove it!" I believe I read the lines for a while to affirm that it wasn't a dream as he tried to look for any element of fraud in the piece. Logan couldn't find any.

"How do I know this is true?" I had asked.

"There is only one way to find out," the old woman walked away as sheaves Logan with the piece of paper in his hands. Logan walked back home with the paper, having mixed feelings and wondering what to do with the paper my mistake was that I told Katherine.

"You must be a dreamer to think about even winning this competition. Do you know how many people are going to be involved? I am not killing your spirit but You are going to do terribly in the competition and let's hope and pray you to make it to the next round in order not to insult the family's name," my elder sister, Katherine had said.

"What will happen if I win?" I asked confidently.

"Do you think the pack will accept you as their leader? You know much about your family heritage and what do you think will be the end of it when you win?"Katherine fired back as she looked back at me with tender eyes.

"I do not care about my family heritage neither do I care about what you think Katherine, all I am certain is that," I paused for a while before he continued. "All I am certain is that I am going for the competition and I am certain I am going to win because I do not think there is anyone capable of stopping me." Logan stomped out of the kitchen and banged the door behind him as soon as he entered his room.

"The next time, you make sure you bring the whole house down!" Katherine shouted.

In the middle of the night, a soft and tender knock was on my door.

"Logan, it's me," mother had called. "Oh Lo-organ" she had called again. "I shall walk away if you don't want me," after a few minutes, I knew she was never going to leave if I don't answer so U had to but to be honest, I needed her presence.

"Why am I born into a family like this?" I asked the mother.

"You do not choose your family, but you have the chance to make your family better."

"How mother? Please tell me how."

Logan's mother walked into his room and sat down on his bed. Logan followed her and sat beside his mother.

"I am trying to make life better for everyone and yet, Katherine has killed my spirit. Right now I am doubting if I should even go at all."

"You shall go my, young warrior. I am certain you will make us proud."

"What If I don't?"

"It won't matter. At least we will know that we have tried, besides we don't lose, we only learn."

"Okay, but mother..." the breaking of ceramic plates could be heard from the kitchen, a sound that almost everybody in Logan's household was familiar with. His drunken father had gone to get a cup of water.

"Why don't we go and live with, Uncle Bob?" Logan's mother had always expected the question and had prayed to the moon goddess that she would be able to get the perfect answer the day her kids had decided to ask but unfortunately for her, she had not seen the question coming therefore she became spellbound towards the answer.

"What's wrong with here?" She asked.

"Nothing, I just believe life would have been easier there."

"Comfortable lifestyle breeds weaker men, Uncle Bob, is a Hybrid and we are werewolves so you can't go there," mother stood up and walked out of the room."
