Chapter 42
"All Alpha's mate annual meeting will be held in our territory."
"However, I want our female leaders involved in this one. This is my way of grooming all female leaders; old and young in preparation for total leadership." Everyone nodded their heads in affirmation slowly.
"Instead of this, this year's meeting committee will be headed by, Ashley."
This one was what left Ashley speechless, even some of the leaders especially the elders were dumbfounded, and only some of the female leaders expressed their displease with the grumbles they mumble.
"Logan, did you think this through? Ashley is..."
"Ashley is my woman!" Logan shut Queen Vicky, who was ready to educate Logan on how weak humanity was and how unright it was to make a human head a committee in the hybrid's clan.
"Of course, she is your woman but she remains human and that is a great weakness." Queen Vicky said erupting noises from those who are in support of her; more than half of the room is in her support. They all had several words to speak as though Ashley was absent from the meeting.
"Can you all just keep quiet and listen to me?" Logan commanded.
The room instantly became as silent as an empty yard.
"Queen Astana!" Logan called on one of the female leaders who has been silent since he started the meeting.
"Yes, Lord Logan," Queen Astana answered.
"I will leave Ashley to you, help her in the coordination of this next meeting. You know how it is done," Logan said making Queen Astana nod.
"Alright, Lord Logan, I will make sure..." She was still speaking when Logan noticed that the attention of the people was directed towards the door like an outcast was walking in, holding everyone in gasped.
However, he was quick to notice what caused the frenzy. No, an outcast wasn't walking in. In fact, no one was walking in; Ashley just frantically ran out of the room. He needed no one to inform him that he might just have messed up.
All things being equal, he saw it coming.
Ashley continued running; She disregarded every guard who showed concern and kept running until she was very sure she wasn't anywhere near the pack house. She ran into her bedroom as soon as she came in contact with the door, and locked herself in.
"This was definitely why he left the note." Ashley thought aloud. "He called me purposely to embarrass me"
As if on cue, her phone rang. It was Jessica, face-timing her. "What a wrong time," she said under-breathe. She picked up the call and Jessica's face came on display in full on her screen.
"Have you abandoned work for your ancestors?"Jessica asked immediately, making a chuckle leave Ashley. "What the hell is wrong with you? You are obviously not happy!" Jessica almost screamed at the screen of Ashley's phone.
"I am very fine, Jess."
"Of course you are. Now spill!" Jessica commanded.
"Alright..." Ashley started.
She explained all that happened; starting from how she got a note inviting her to the pack house till when she got to the room again.
"Wow! So you will be heading a meeting full of the supernaturals?" Jessica asked, unable to hide her delight.
"No, heading the preparation committee or something of the sort and honestly, that's not the point."
"What is?" Jessica asked back, her face contoured in mock understanding.
"Logan could have told me in person before embarrassing and disrespecting me like that! Did you not hear what Queen Vicky said? Logan embarrassed me and I was not prepared for it. He could have prepared me instead of..." she trailed off then continued, picking herself up immediately. "I am not one of his domestic workers, Jessica! He could have approached this in a better way, not commanding me to do something this controversial in the presence of everyone." Ashley ranted to Jessica, who although understood her, was only concerned with the idea of her best friend heading a supernaturals' meeting.
"But wait, if he had told you, would you have accepted?" Jessica asked.
Ashley thought about it for a few seconds, but the only thing ringing in her head was.
"She is only human and that is a weakness." Queen Vicky's words hurt her as Ashley remembered it ring in her head. Although she has heard it before, this felt like salt added to her wound.
"I was embarrassed, Jessica," she said slowly, her pain loudly evident in her voice.
"I am sorry you felt that way, but would you have accepted if he had requested another way?" Jessica insisted.
"I don't think so. I don't think I would have," she said.
"Jackpot! And you know how stubborn Logan can be, he would have gone ahead either way, and we would be here discussing how he doesn't rate you even after you declined."
"You can't fault him for this approach," Jessica said excusing Logan's actions.
"On the bright side, your man knows you well, you should be grateful," Jessica said making Ashley smile.
"So, what are you going to do about it?" Jessica asked.
"I don't know, Jess, I don't think I want to do this," Ashley replied and Jessica nodded in genuine understanding.
They continued their call. Jessica filled her in on what she had missed in the office and other personal stories.
The call was definitely what she needed at the time.
