Chapter 32
“What’s going on Phillip? Why have you called me here?”
Roman asked as he kept staring at his cellphone. The past few days had been very hectic for him as he had immersed himself in work. After what happened with Megan, he really couldn’t bring himself to visit her or to see her.
He knew he left abruptly and they still had a lot of things to say but he didn’t know what to say. Or where to start, he just couldn’t get the fact that she was pregnant with another man’s baby out of his head.
He knew that he had told her that he didn’t mind if the baby was his, yet he still couldn’t tell why it bothered him so much. Maybe because a part of him had hoped and believed that the baby was his.
Phillip had dragged him out of work under the elaborate ruse that they were meeting a new business partner at dinner, that was one of the only reasons Roman had agreed to come.
He had been working late for the past few days to avoid his thoughts.
“Relax, you’ve been so busy with work, I feel like you deserve a little break. Come on!”
Roman sighed.
“Phillip, I don’t have time for this, I have a lot of things to do at work.”
Phillip scoffed.
“Not really, whatever work you have can always be reassigned to someone else. You know that.”
“I’m tired of you sulking around and being moody all day, so come on, let’s get on with it.”
“With what?”
Roman asked as he finally looked up, there was a leggy blonde right in front of him. She had a bright smile on her face and she was wearing a white cropped top with a small matching figure hugging skirt and shell pink painted nails clad in open heels.
Roman did not recognize her, or know who she was either. He sighed, she was either another one of Phillip’s latest conquests or Phillip was trying to set him up with another woman like he had promised in their last meeting.
Something he was really not up for. He had quite a lot on his mind about work, it wasn’t the appropriate time for him to be meeting more women.
“This is Lydia. She’s an investment banker and a friend of my sister. She works at Citibank. I’ve told her about you and she couldn’t wait to meet you.”
Lydia stretched out a hand to shake Roman. He was so much more handsome in person than the pictures she had seen. He had this movie star look about him, dark hair, striking blue eyes and a tall and nice physique. And deliciously single too, from what she heard from Philip.
She had been hesitant about going on a date with a man she knew nothing about, but when she found out that it was the Roman Harrington, CEO to one of the most successful and biggest companies in New York, she just couldn’t help but say yes. Not only was he great to look out, being with him would definitely give her a boost up her social ladder.
Roman Harrington was always very generous with his girlfriends from what she had read. Majority of his ex-girlfriends had enjoyed luxury trips, expensive gifts and basically anything that they asked for. He had treated them like queens, although some of them, like Petra had been ungrateful.
“I’m so glad I finally met you, Philip has told me a lot of wonderful things about you.”
Romans eyes widened as he turned to glare at Phillip.
“Oh wow! It’s nice to meet you too Lydia.”
“I’m sorry if I look a bit surprised, its just that Phillip didn’t tell me anything about you or the fact that I was going to be meeting you today.”
Lydia nodded.
“Oh it’s okay, I totally understand.”
Phillip smiled sneakily.
“I guess I’ll leave you guys to it. I already booked you guys a table in advance. It’s over there.”
He said as he pointed to a private corner in the restaurant.
Then he turned to a still confused Roman and a smiling Lydia.
“I’m afraid I have to get back to work, I guess I’ll just leave you guys to it.”
“You're leaving?!”
Roman exclaimed and Phillip shrugged as he started making his way out.
“Yes. I have a lot of work to do at the office and you and Lydia need time alone to get to know each other and unwind.”
He winked and then hurried out of the restaurant.
Roman grimaced after noticing that he had been left alone with Lydia.
Megan sighed as she looked through her closet, she had nothing to wear. At least, nothing she wanted to wear. She had been dreading going for the checkup she was going to because it meant that she would get know the sex of her baby. But she didn’t think she was quite ready to know and she had been putting it off for the last couple of weeks.
Now with everything that happened with Roman and Anthony, she just couldn’t wait to get it all over with. Ever sine Anthony had made his big reveal, Megan had been avoiding him. She had avoided his calls, didn’t open the door for him whenever he rang the doorbell and didn’t see him when he came to the coffee shop.
Even though he was the father of her baby, she really couldn’t bear to see him and with everything that was happening, she felt like she deserved a few moments to herself.
Roman had not reached out to her either. She didn’t blame him either, but she did slightly resent him, for not being able to keep his word. He had said that he didn’t care who the father was, apparently, he did. A lot.
Her doorbell rang and she walked to the door to open it. It was her mother. They had talked a few nights ago and she wanted to come with her to the doctor’s appointment as well as see her new apartment.
“You’re not dressed yet.”
Her mother said as a matter of fact as she walked in. Megan shrugged.
“I don’t know what to wear.”
“How are you doing?”
She asked as she led her mother to a sofa in the living room. Her mother looked around the apartment.
“Well, I can see why you wanted to keep the place. It’s quite the catch.”
“I know.”
Megan replied as she waltzed to her room with a smirk on her face. A few minutes later she comes out fully dressed in jeans and a white shirt dress.
“Megan are you sure you don’t want to go with Anthony?”
“Shhhh Mum I invited you, not him. Please don’t ruin this moment we have by mentioning his name.”
“Well, I’m sorry, I have to. Won’t you guys at least make up?”
“Make up?!”
“It’s not that easy! I mean, this is a guy who stalked me! And then he had the audacity to get a DNA test done without my permission. I don’t know about you but I don’t want that kind of man around me or my baby.”
“I can do this alone.”
She said nervously as she picked up her purse.
“You know… you don’t have to.”
Her mother said softly.
“You think I had a choice raising you alone?”
Her mother asked and Megan shrugged.
She turned to her mother and blinked back tears. She didn’t know why but she couldn’t stop crying, she found herself crying every damned minute!
Stupid hormones!
“No, I know you didn’t have a choice. And I know you're trying your possible best to make sure that I don’t make the same mistakes like you did but you’re not me Mum!”
“And this is an entirely different situation. And this time, I have a choice!”
“And for now, I’m going to do this my way. So let’s just go with that.”
“Are you coming with me or not?”
She finally asked and her mother nodded.
“You think I’d pass up a chance to see my granddaughter?”
At the doctors, Megan and her mother find out that she’s having a baby girl. The ultrasound alone brought tears to Megan’s eyes, she knew at that moment that she would do anything and everything to protect her daughter.
Because it was her baby, hers only.
She was Megan's baby.
