Chapter 35.
"We need to set boundaries like I mentioned earlier."
Megan said as she reached into her fridge and pulled out a tub of her favourite ice-cream. Anthony had dropped by unannounced and she had decided it was time where they had the talk where they set ground rules. There was obviously no way in hell that they would get back together but they did need to find a way to successfully coparent.
And for the sake of her daughter Megan was going to let him in her life.
"Absolutely."
Anthony nodded.
"Congratulations on your new job. I'm really happy for you."
"Thanks."
"Like I was saying. Boundaries. First of all, you cannot just show up unannounced like this."
"If you're going to come over, give me a call first."
Anthony sighed, she was right about that, he did have a tendency of showing up unannounced, but that was only because she would most likely make up an excuse or another if he told her he wanted to see her.
"Yes, but most times when I ask you if I should come over, you say no."
"Well that's only because I'm either busy with something at the moment or I just don't want to see you."
"Ouch." Anthony groaned at her words and Megan shrugged.
"It's the truth. The baby's not even here yet, you can't expect me to drop everything I'm doing just because you want to see me."
"I just want to make sure you're okay."
"Trust me, if I wasn't okay, you would know. We're not dating or anything, so tone down all that and save the energy for when the baby is actually born."
Anthony laughed as he wiped his sweay hands on his jeans, she was insulting every one of his efforts and making things terribly hard for him and he hated it. He hated how angry and vulnerable it made him feel.
To think he had gone so far, so so far just to make sure that she was his and she still didn't want him.
"Why don't you like me?"
"What?"
Megan asked absentmindedly as she searched for a spoon in her kitchen drawers.
"I want to know exactly why you don't like me. I mean, you used to before, now it's like you can't even stand the sight of me."
Anthony chuckled.
He stood up from the stool and paced around the kitchen, Megan watched him quietly and nervously.
"I mean, is it because he's rich or something? Or because he looks nicer?"
"Hey! I can wear a suit if I want to."
"I actually look pretty good in one."
"Sure, I'm not going to be nearly or even half as rich as him, my daddy didn't really leave me a shitload of money to inherit..."
"Stop it."
Megan warned and Anthony paused.
"Really, just stop. What is wrong with you?"
She asked.
He was so obsessed with her relationship with Roman and he really couldn't wrap his head around why she would always pick Roman over him.
"What do you see in him? What?!"
He rushed to her side and held her shoulders, shaking them slightly, tears welled in his eyes and he brushed his curly hair out of the way.
"If you'd let me, I can take care of you, even more than him."
"Oh for heaven's sake!!! Just stop!"
"It's not about that! It's never about that. I just really really like Roman and sometimes I can't even explain why."
Megan moved away from Anthony as he quickly stood to his feet.
"He is super sweet, he's kind and very considerste of my feelings. He respects me too. And I don't know, some part of me knows and feels like when we first met, we formed such a strong and intense bond and even though I don't rememeber the times we spent together, I can feel them."
There was a long pause between the two of them, Anthony finally nodded his head. Megan had enough of him already.
"Can you please leave, I'm feeling so uncomfortable around you and I would like to be alone please."
Anthony nodded. His head was hung low like some defeated puppy, Megan watched him leave and locked the door firmly behind him.
Oh that was exhilarating!
She thought as she laid a hand on her belly.
She didn't know how she was going to handle Anthony if he came around and declared his feelings everytime they were alone. That sounded like it would be mentally exhausting.
It was her first day at her new job and she loved every second of it. She didn't have to do much, all she did most times was to engage the customers and make sure the staff were doing their job. Occasionally, she would walk around to see if everything was fine. The centre was so serene and beautiful and everyone was nice to her. Megan didn't know if it was because she was pregnant but they definitely seemed to be extra kind to her.
"So you say you lost your memories?"
Laura asked and Megan nodded.
"That's quite sad."
She had been on her lunch break and Laura her boss had dropped in for a quick visit. They decided to go for a drink together and Laura asked about Megan and Megan couldn't help talking about everything she had been through.
Laura was so calm and attentive it made Megan open up even more, even about Roman. The woman had such a lovely and relaxing presence that Megan felt peaceful talking to her.
"Maybe your subconscious is trying to suppress those memories because of how hurtful they are."
"You mentioned you were close to your boyfriend."
Megan nodded.
"Yes, I loved him. I think being pregnant and everything that has happened hasn't really given me the moment to fully grasp everything. But I can say for sure that I'm over him now."
Megan smiled as she remembered the last time they saw each other at the thai restaurant. Yes, she was over him, that she could say.
"You know, for a long time now, hypnosis as been used as a way to uncover traumatic memories, even the ones during childhood."
Megan's eyes widened.
"Hypnosis?! Are you sure?"
She asked with doubt in her voice and Laura nodded her head.
"Yes. For a long time now, we've been offering such services at the center. It even helped me deal with the trauma I experienced as a child."
At that point, Megan would try anything really. Hypnosis?!! She was skeptical, but it seemed legit and as Laura talked about it more and more animatedly, Megan was convinced. She was going to try hypnosis.
"I want to try it. Trust me at this point I will try anything."
"Good, we can leave for the centre right now. Hypnosis is one of my stronger forte."
Megan nodded.
She signaled to the waiter and picked up her purse, she was ready to leave.
She was so excited, for a number of reasons. One, because it was the first real chance she had in a long time to recover her memories. It was also a long shot, but she was willing to try.
The restaurant staff were cleaning up a spill in front of the exit door and Megan was way too fixated on her phone trying to text Salma about her trying hypnosis. One of the staff tried to alert her but she wasn't listening.
She wasn't looking at where she was going and it all happened in a flash when she slipped. She fell hard on her back on the marble floor, her head smacking the floor with that familiar thump.
Instantly, everyone around rushed to help her up. Megan was so disoriented as they struggled to help her up. She laid a protective hand around her belly, she didn't feel any pain there that was a relief. But her head, oh damn.
Her head was throbbing hard.
She was vaguely aware of the fact that Laura was in front of her.
"Megan! Are you okay?"
Megan was vaguely aware of the fact that she was nodding, as one hefty man slowly lifted her up and gently helped her onto a chair. For about the next two minutes Megan had people all over her and could do nothing but nod vaguely till they all dispersed and Laura decided she would take her to the hospital just to make sure everything is fine.
"We'll just make sure you don't have a concussion."
She said as she helped Megan buckle up and they drove off.
In the car, the flashbacks began, it started from the day she found Nick cheating and then meeting Roman in the bar that first night.
"Stop!!!'
Megan shouted as she raised her hands.
Laura looked at her skeptically.
"Are you sure?"
"You weren't responding earlier and I decided that I should take you to the hospital."
Megan nodded.
"I know. But I'm starting to remember."
"Remember?!"
Laura seemed lost.
"Remember what?"
Megan turned to her with a smile on her face as she winced a little.
"My memories, they're coming back."
