Chapter 33.
She was stopping at the Thai restaurant to get dinner. She had been craving Thai food for a while and it kept bringing back memories of her and Roman eating Thai food.
She hated it.
How was it that the things she wanted to remember didn't come easily to her, but the things she didn't want to remember came as easily as it wanted to?
She asked herself as she walked into the restaurant with her purse in her hand.
She dug in her purse to look for her credit card, she already knew what she was going to order.
It was going to be very meaty and spicy, that was exactly what she wanted, she could even taste the meal.
"Megan?"
Someone called from behind. The voice sounded oddly familiar.
Wait!
It was Nick!
She slowly turned and saw him smiling at her. His eyes widened as he looked at her belly.
"Wait! Are you really pregnant or you're just bloated or something?"
"I thought it was you but then I wasn't too sure with the you know..."
He said as he gestured to her belly.
Megan chuckled slowly.
"Hello Nick."
It was weird.
Weird that it had been it had been almost six months since they broke up and she was already five months pregnant.
He was the reason everything that happened to her happened to her. If he hadn't cheated on her with someone else, they would probably be having an entirely different conversation and she won't be pregnant and so confused.
"And yea. I am really pregnant, I'm not sure someone can get this bloated."
She said and he nodded.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's great seeing you here! I stopped by at your old apartment and heard you moved out "
Megan nodded.
Wait he stopped by at her apartment?
Why did he have to?
"Yea. I needed more space. Besides my rent was due because I spent all my money trying to give us the best anniversary."
Nick's smile fell off his face.
"I'm really sorry..."
"I'm actually over it."
She quickly cut him off.
"Really. It took some time but it's for the best."
Nick nodded.
"And you? Judging by the baby bump you seem to be seeing someone already too. Is it that guy you were hanging out with back then?"
"What guy?"
She asked and Nick shrugged.
"Tall, dark hair, insanely hot with the suit and all. I once saw you guys together and you guys seemed pretty intimate."
"Oh."
"Roman."
Megan said slowly.
That was interesting. Almost everyone she knew seemed to have seen her with Roman, yet she couldn't remember.
But it did mean they did spend a lot of time together.
Three whole weeks and it all started the day she found out Nick was cheating on her till the day she was apparently going to the hospital to confirm if she was really pregnant after missing her period.
The universe truly works in mysterious ways.
"How's Camille?"
She asked as she settled in a table, she didn't want them to continue blocking the exit and it seemed like they'd be talking for a while.
She didn't mind talking to him. Even though he had hurt her really bad, for some reason talking to him didn't hurt anymore. She no longer viewed him as a lover, but as a friend.
Her feelings for him had died so quickly, almost like a light had been snuffed out.
Nick tugged at his shirt and looked away quickly.
"We broke up."
Megan's eyes widened.
That was new.
"And when did that happen?"
Nick shrugged.
"About three months ago. We tried to make it work, we really did."
"Oh. That's sad."
Megan replied and Nick nodded.
"After that I went and tried to see you. I felt so ashamed and sorry about the things I did. I also hoped that we would fix things."
"The minute I saw that your apartment was empty I knew that it was a sign for me to stop trying."
Megan sighed.
"Well... like I said, I am already over it. You don't need to bring it up anymore. But I'm happy I got to see you today."
"You look great!"
She said genuinely and Nick chuckled.
"And you look even better. Pregnancy looks good on you."
Megan blushed. She had received the compliment quite a few times, even from strangers but she never got tired of hearing it.
"Well. I have to go now. I'm very hungry and I just came here to order some takeaway."
Nick nodded as he stood on his feet, taking that as his cue to leave.
"I'm so happy I saw you today, you don't know how relieved I am to finally see that you're well and okay."
Megan smiled.
"I'm happy to see you too. It's been a while."
"I guess I'll see you around? Maybe call me when you have a baby shower or something? I'd drop a nice gift."
"I will keep that in mind."
"Right."
Nick said as he waved and left the restaurant.
Wow!
Megan thought as she watched him leave. So Camille and Nick weren't together anymore?
She wondered how Camille was doing, seeing as she threw away their entire friendship because of a guy. That was really dumb, but like she had told Nick, she was truly over it.
That part of her life was over and she was truly looking forward to a new part of her life. One where she could take care of her baby in a loving and beautiful environment.
She was still ignoring Anthony. she knew she shouldn't, he was the father of her baby and he wanted to be involved, unlike most fathers. She just couldn't bring herself to do it.
Something about Anthony didn't feel right and the way he acted and the things he did didn't make her feel any better about him, in fact it made her weary of him.
"So you're letting me go?"
Megan asked as she stared into space. She was in Mrs Seymour's office. Mrs Seymour had arrived about two weeks ago and she had been monitoring everything that was going on in the café, Megan had done anything and everything to try and stay on her good side to avoid the inevitable but it was near impossible.
When Mrs Seymour called her into her office that evening, she already knew what was going on, the old woman was letting her go.
"I'm sorry Megan, I know that you really need the job and you've been wonderful honestly but I just can't afford you right now."
Megan nodded.
"Yea. I understand, but I can do other jobs, we need an extra waiter so I don't mind serving the tables for a while..."
"In your present state?"
Mrs Seymour sounded devastated.
"Oh no! I would never do that. That would be cruel of me."
Megan sighed, there was no way she would be able to convince Mrs Seymour, but she really needed the job. Anything would do.
She needed to start stocking up on baby things, she had to decorate her nursery and buy some maternity clothes.
"But, I can recommend you to someone. I know a place looking to hire someone and I think you might be perfect for them."
Megan's eyes lit up in excitement.
Well, as long as it was a damn job, She'd take it! shell take anything that was given to her.
She needed the money that bad.
"I'll take it."
"Perfect!"
the woman grinned as she reached for her drawer.
"I have the address and the number somewhere here, so I would just write that down for you and you will give them a call and tell them you'ready from me."
"I'll call them in advance for you."
"Perfect! Thank you so much Mrs Seymour! Really, this is great!"
Mrs Seymour nodded.
"You're welcome! I wish you well Megan, you really did a great job with this place."
Megan smiled and nodded.
She left Mrs Seymour's office and found the employees waiting outside with a cupcake and a card.
"Awwn guys! You didn't have to."
Alex shrugged.
"It was the little we could do. Thank you for everything."
"Thank you so much guys, I'm going to miss you."
She grabbed the cupcake and blew out the candle and took the card from them, all of them had signed it and they had written a sweet message. she knew she had not been there for so long, so she had not been expecting such a kind, sweet gesture from the employees.
"it's chocolate."
Anwar pointed out and Megan nodded as she bit into the cupcake. Oh! It was simply heaven, it was moist, gooey and decadent, exactly what she thought a chocolate cake should taste like.
After spending a bit of time in the shop, she started walking away, she debated going to Salma's place for a while then remembered the last time she had visited and Salma had made her change diapers for practice.
No, no. definitely not Salma's place.
"Hey, Megan!"
Anthony abruptly stopped in front of her and she internally groaned. Was he following her or did she not just notice him earlier?
Perhaps he had been to the shop and saw her leaving.
"Hey Anthony."
He smiled at her, raised his arms for a hug but Megan shied away.
"Can we talk?"
He asked and Megan looked at her watch.
"I don't know, I kind of have a lot of things to do today."
She said as she looked around.
Anthony nodded.
'"It'll be short. I know you're ignoring me because oof what I did and I swear, I truly feel horrible."
Megan raised an eyebrow.
"Did you?"
He nodded.
"I swear, I did. But I'm sorry and I don't mind begging you for the rest of my life just for you to know how sorry I am."
"But please, if this is going to affect our relationship, I don't want it to affect the relationship between me and my child."
"I want to be in this baby's life Megan. Please."
Megan looked around, everyone was walking around them and Anthony was looking at her intensely, waiting for a reply.
He sounded sincere and she really couldn't stay mad at him forever, he was the father of her child.
"Okay."
He sighed in relief and held her shoulders.
"Thank you. Thank you so much."
"We'll just need to establish some ground rules. Just because you want to be in my baby's life doesn't mean you get to have a say over mine."
"Absolutely! I understand you perfectly."
"Good."
Megan said as she started walking away, the she paused and turned to look at him and added as an afterthought.
"The baby's a girl."
