Chapter 36.
For the next one hour, the memories kept coming back, clearly. Almost as if they had happened the day before.
Laura helped her through every second of it, asking her questions, asking her to explain everything that she was remembering.
Each revelation was more shocking than the last and some made her cry.
She could remember the feeling and pain as well as the memories and she didn't know if that was going to be permanent. She could remember how badly Nick had hurt her, how it hurt seeing him and her best friend in bed together. How she had drank herself to stupor trying to drown out the pain.
Megan never did know how to handle pain properly, maybe that was why her subconscious had tried to shield away those memories from her, so that she wouldn't be hurt but clearly now she had no choice but to feel them all again.
The final memory was from the day she had the accident. She could remember it clearly, it was the most important memory for her.
She had missed her period, texted Roman about it and was on her way to the hospital to confirm. She was just around the hospital block when Anthony had come to her, he was begging her, asking her for another chance together. A date or anything, Megan was brushing him off, she had other things on her mind and she couldn't think straight.
The fact that she was pregnant was one, she couldn't believe it, Roman and her were barely going out, they weren't official yet and she wasn't ready for a baby, she was sure he was either.
She was trying to cross the street and he was distracting her. She screamed at him to stop following her and that was when the accident had happened.
She was so distracted while trying to cross the street she hadn't seen the vehicle.
He was the one who rushed her to the hospital. She didn't tell him why she was going to the hospital, because he wasn't the father of her baby.
In fact, the one encounter they had together, she couldn't remember what happened initially because she was drunk but the memory had come to her later.
The day after the night they met, while she was still hungover from all the alcohol she asked him if they had sex and had said they did.
But he was lying, bits and pieces of the same night came back to her. Yes, they had made out, but they were so drunk they passed out tired with their clothes half gone.
But Megan was sure they didn't have sex. Why did he lie then?
Why did he lie that he was the father?
Megan thought as she shook her head, a lot of things didn't make sense, especially about how Anthony had acted.
She was sure they didn't see each other after that. That was their first and only encounter except for the time she was going to the hospital and he had distracted her.
The DNA test, that too must have been a complete lie. Why was he even lying in the first place?
She kept calm as she kept on revisiting every memory, she penned some of them down as they came, eager not to miss one bit of information.
She was going to get the full story, she was going to remember everything, with or without the help of hypnosis.
At the hospital the Doctor said she was fine, he asked her a lot of questions and he did some tests to be sure she was alright. He even took a scan to be sure the baby was okay.
Megan was tired after the long day, with all the tests and all she wasn't really sure anything was wrong with her, she just thought the doctors were more confused about her regaining her memories, after so long.
They didn't think she was going to remember them.
"So, are you going to tell him? What you remember?"
Laura asked after dropping off Megan in front of her apartment and Megan shrugged.
"Who? You mean Roman?"
She asked and Laura nodded.
"Oh no. I don't know... He told me he didn't care if the baby was his, but he took off the moment he thought it wasn't."
"I don't know if I can have anything to do with him if he doesn't genuinely like me that way."
"I don't want him to feel obligated to this baby."
Laura nodded.
"From your memories, it seems like you had nothing to do with Anthony, at least not in a that would make a baby, so why does the DNA say it's his?"
Megan nodded.
"That's what I don't understand! I mean if it was fake, why would he fake a DNA test? Why would he do all that? And for what?"
"To claim a baby that isn't his? To get Roman out of the way?"
Laura sighed.
"Whatever it is, you should be very careful with him. In the meantime, get some rest. I'll see you at work tomorrow."
"Oh thank you so much Laura. You've done so much for me."
"Oh no worries."
Laura grinned.
"I just want you to be fine."
She added and Megan nodded.
"I am now. I have a lot of things to set straight."
Back in her apartment, she called Salma and told her everything. For some reason, Salma was very excited the baby wasn't Anthony's claiming that he gave her creepy vibes. She told her mother too, and her mother seemed not to recover from the shock as easily as she should.
Megan promised her mother that she would take another DNA test just to ease her worries.
She was in the kitchen busy making pasta when there was a persistent knock on the door.
She was so sure it was Anthony that she charged to the door and opened it right away.
But it was Roman who was right in front of her.
She was mute.
What are the odds?
He was visiting her the very day she regained her memories.
"Hi."
He said quietly as he walked in.
Megan still continued to look at him.
She felt a little uncomfortable, seeing as she had grown bigger than she was the last time and she was wearing baggy shorts and a large oversized shirt.
"Can I come in?"
He asked and Megan raised her eyebrow.
"You're already in."
She said as she shut the door.
"Sorry about that."
He muttered.
For one, he wasn't dressed formally and Megan had to admit he looked good in a simple jeans and tight black T-shirt. Something that she didn't know could be so appealing. But of course, it was Roman, he could wear a sack and look good in it, with a face and body like his.
She on the other hand felt the complete opposite. She had recently adopted what was called the pregnancy walk and she waddled everywhere she went to.
"What are you doing here Roman?"
She asked and he shrugged.
"I just needed to see you. We ended things on a bad note."
Megan shrugged.
"Oh I don't blame you. Who would expect someone like you to date a woman pregnant with another man's child."
"It took me a lot of courage to come here. I didn't like how we left things."
Roman said as he looked around the apartment, he loved what she was doing with the place.
Why was he so nervous. Like he said, he had told himself he was coming to talk things with her. For closure, since he couldn't find it easy to forget about her.
That was all.
"Well, you're the one who walked out."
Megan noted as she sat on her couch and Roman nodded.
"I was just overwhelmed."
"Why were you?"
She asked after a bit of silence.
Roman sat next to get, close enough for her to smell his cologne and aftershave.
"I know I told you that I'd stay even if the baby wasn't mine, but a little bit of me had at least hoped it was mine."
"And I didn't know your history with Anthony, I didn't want to get in the way of that."
He added as he looked at her intensely and Megan nodded. He was kind of right.
"Anthony and I don't have that much history. We didn't even go out or anything. It was just a silly fling."
Roman sighed.
"I know... But."
"Wait..."
He said as the realisation slowly dawned on him. He turned to Megan who had a goofy smile on her face.
"How did you know? Have you got your memories back?"
He asked and she nodded.
"Yes. Yes. I have."
"Oh! Megan that's wonderful! When?"
Roman asked as he started laughing. He drew her in for a hug and she hugged him tightly.
She missed him.
She missed the feel of him on her.
"You remember everything?"
He asked after he pulled away and she nodded.
"Everything." she mouthed as she found herself running her hand through his chest.
She caught herself and paused when she heard Roman's breath hitched.
"I'm sorry."
She whispered and he sighed.
"It's okay. I understand. When you have those memories..."
He stopped abruptly. No, he didn't want to go there.
"Do you remember what happened the day you lost your memories?
"Yes."
Megan said as she frowned.
"I was on my way to confirm the pregnancy and Anthony came along and he wanted to talk to me but I kept brushing him off and I was distracted and that was when it happened. He was the one who took me to the hospital."
"Oh! I'm so sorry."
Megan nodded.
She was still contemplating whether or not she was going to tell Roman that he was the father of her baby.
She knew he deserved to know, but for some reason, she decided not to mention it.
Megan looked at her phone.
"Oh. Look at the time! I'm meeting up with Salma. I need to dress and get ready."
Roman nodded.
"Sure! Sure."
He stood up, ready to leave. But he had one question in his mind.
"So... You and Anthony? Are you together?"
He asked nervously and Megan scoffed.
"Not a chance!" After all he did?"
"Do you really think so lowly of me?"
She joked and Roman shook his head, scratching his head hopelessly.
"No! I just thought with him being the father and all."
Megan shrugged.
"It's never happening."
"If you'll excuse me, I have to go."
She said as she walked towards the door and opened it for Roman.
Roman nodded.
"Right. I guess I'll see you around."
