Chapter 31: Beep

**Alice’s Point of view**

Beep. Beep. Beep.
Where am I? Where is the wolf?
Beep. Beep.
Oh, yeah. She helped me. Helped for what already?
Beep. Beep.
Oh, yeah. The light. The pain. The car that hit me.
Beep. Beep.
I hear whispers in the dark. I only catch bribes. "...not an accident .... Didn't see the plate... Fractured bones... Doesn't heal."
I feel a hand rest on mine.
Beep-beep-beep.
"She's reacting!" Exclaims a man near me.
Someone else takes my other hand. "Alice, it's dad. Can you hear us?"
I try to move and speak but I feel paralyzed. I feel someone kiss me on the forehead. "We're all here, sweetie. We're staying right here." A woman says.
Where is the man from earlier? I want to see him.
Uh, see who?
What am I talking about?
I try to move again but without success and sink into unconsciousness.
Beep. Beep.
I hear a voice in the distance. "... Significant improvements. It seems that she has started to heal but I don't know what triggered the process. The fractures seem to be healing and we'll be able to take out the tube in a few hours when her right lung will be functional again. However, the cerebral hemorrhage worries me. It is slowly healing but I am afraid of sequels."
"Sequels?"Asks a man, worried.
"Yes, she is in a coma. Her body will heal but her brain is something else. She could have amnesia or motor or psychic problems." Says a man who I assumed is the doctor.
"What does that mean?" A woman asks in a small voice.
"It means that if she remembers us she will be like a vegetable or unable to go to the bathroom by herself." Says a man angrily, pacing around. Ma father. I remember.
"Calm down. She's strong, she'll be fine." Says the woman gently.
Mom! It’s my mom!
"Calm down?! Without her, our pack is finished! The others will fight to get what's ours." He says angrily.
"Are you serious? Our daughter might die and all you can think about is who will inherit our pack years from now?" My mother says in a threatening tone.
"Don't put words in my mouth. Of course, I'm worried about her, she's my daughter." His voice breaks at the end and I hear him swallow. "But as an Alpha, I have to worry about the future of the pack too."
"You know what? Just leave it."
"Mary ..."
I feel the darkness invade me again and no matter how much I struggle, I am too tired and end up sinking.
To my great surprise, I find myself in an alley. An alley I know. It is here that I met Cop.
He has another name. What is it?
Elliot. Yes, I remember Elliot.
I turn around and find myself facing a big black wolf with blue eyes.
"Leo." I say softly. "Am I dead?"
"No." He answers in a throaty voice in my head. "But you did scare us."
"Where are we then? And how are you? I felt something in my leg."
"I'm not sure where we are. Elliot and I were worried. We heard that you were hit by a car when someone broke into our room to kill us. Elliot was wounded in the leg by a silver blade but we are okay."
I sigh with relief. "Are you safe?"
"Yes, we are in the hospital. We passed out at the same time as you. Cassiopeia came to us and told us she lost you. Elliot was able to find you but couldn't stay, it's too hard and random until we mark and mate."
"Exactly. I thought that kind of visit and all that was rare and possible only after you've been marked, which is not the case for us." I say.
"We didn't mark each other but the Moon Goddess did. We think the bond between us is deeper than we thought."
I nod. "So now what? We wait?"
"Yes. You need time to heal. But the longer it takes, the less likely you are to wake up. And you have to wake up." He says firmly.
I frown. "Why?"
"Because we can't live without you." He says in the same tone. I don't have time to reply when he takes a step forward and is less than a meter away from me. "Alice, Cassiopeia told us that you two fought because of us just before the accident. I wanted to ask for your forgiveness, on behalf of myself and Elliot. We didn't mean to offend you and we didn't use our Alpha tone on purpose. We were just worried about you. I had a bad feeling and wanted to stop you from going to that meeting. If it wasn't for Elliot I probably would have sequestered you in that coffee shop but he wouldn't let me. I just wanted to protect you. You're so precious to me."
I sigh. "I'm the one who's sorry. I overreacted and I shouldn't have. I'm an Alpha too so I don't like taking orders." I say with a laugh and I feel like he's smiling too.
Beep. Beep.
"Do you hear that?" I ask.
Beep. Beep.
He listens carefully. "No. What?"
Beep. Beep.
"There's something ringing."
Beep. Beep.
He looks around. "It's not here."
Beep. Beep.
"Alice, I think I'm losing you." He says, panicked.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
"It's getting louder and faster!" I say, covering my ears but it doesn't dampen the sound.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
I open my eyes in a white room. I look down and see that I'm dressed in a hospital gown and that I'm connected to a lot of wires and tubes.
BEEP. BEEP.
I am alone in the room but I hear my parents talking behind the door.
BEEP.
I turn my eyes to one of the machines next to me and recognize a heart monitor.
BEEP. BEEP.
No doubt about it. That's where it's coming from.
I pull the electrodes off my body and the machine goes crazy and ends up making a continuous high-pitched sound.
BEEEEEEEEEEP.
It's unbearable!
I pull on the wires to approach it and punch the screen hard, silencing this machine from hell.
My door suddenly opens and I see two men in white coats followed by my parents running up to me.
"You're awake! How do you feel?" My mother asks.
"Are you in pain?" Asks my father.
The doctors look at the machine, then at me. "What happened?" Asks the oldest, horrified.
"It pissed me off!"
