Chapter 21: Vera's story
After putting the bitter pills in his mouth, taking a sip of the water in the glass, Egan handed the empty glass back to Eric, who did not forget to say a lament:
"How long will I have to drink this bitter thing? It's really hard to swallow."
"If you have to listen to the doctor's treatment and recovery process, you will quickly get out of here." Eric tries to comfort Egan: "You should be grateful you're so lucky."
"I haven't forgotten that." Egan said: "I plan to work hard to do charity after everything is settled."
"A very righteous and meaningful intention." Eric exclaimed, approvingly: "I'll lend you a hand in that, too."
"Thank you for your enthusiasm." Egan suddenly sincerely expressed: "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have done everything well."
Strangely, Egan has rarely said simple words like thank you or sorry until now. This change of Egan clearly surprised Eric. However, he felt very good like that. Egan opened the door to his dry heart, which is a blessing. Eric witnessed Egan closing in on the sudden death of his parents. Eric hopes Egan's life will be good and meaningful in the future.
"Don't be polite, serving you is my duty as well as my responsibility," Eric replied, setting his glass down on the table. Then he turned back and sat down in the chair, next to Egan's bed.
"Do you want some fruit? I'll peel an apple for you!" Eric rolled his eyes and saw the fruit basket on the table, so he suggested: "You also need to take a lot of vitamins to get well soon."
"Fine, peel me an apple," Egan asked, his eyes also looking towards the fruit.
"In the meantime, eat a tangerine." Eric moved his chair closer to the table, reached into the basket, took out a tangerine, and gave it to Egan. Egan took the peel and put it in his mouth.
Eric carefully peeled the apple, not forgetting to suggest a story so that Egan wouldn't get bored:
"How is your current condition? Do you still feel pain in your body?" Eric asked, eyes still fixed on the knife and apple in his hand.
"The doctor said the recovery is very good. There are no signs of concern." Egan said, constantly chewing each tangerine.
"Good then." Eric was delighted with the good news: "You'll soon be out of the hospital and are planning a grand comeback. Those who rejoice at the news of your death will have to grind their teeth to curse bad luck at the thought of it. They didn't live up to their expectations. You'll show them what it means to be punished."
"I expect the same," Egan said, he remembers the news the doctor gave him today and feels it is great news. He is very happy and happy because the process of his recovery is very fast and smooth.
Eric finished peeling the apple and handed it to Egan: "Here's yours."
"Thanks." Egan took it and immediately took a big bite into his mouth. Although he is not used to Egan's new self, Eric feels very happy when Egan often says thank you to him.
While Egan enjoyed an ordinary apple, the taste was familiar. Eric continued to peel another apple. While peeling an apple, Eric had a question and asked Egan.
"Hey Egan, what's your reason for choosing to stay in this hospital? You should have chosen to go to a better place to rest. It's not just that you followed Kaylin's suggestion right? Come to think of it, this place is both lacking and unsafe. If it were discovered by someone, it would be very difficult to deal with."
Egan suddenly let out a long sigh at Eric's question. He stopped chewing the apple and remembered what happened. When Eric initially offered to take him to a safe, comfortable, place suitable for rest, and at the same time being able to avoid all distractions, he refused. Egan thinks that makes it easier to spot. Just think about pretending to bring a body out of the hospital to be buried is very cumbersome, a lot of procedures. In addition, the process of moving the body is also very attention-grabbing. People will rely on that to investigate Egan's fake death case. So Egan ignored Eric's suggestion. And when he listened to Kaylin's opinion, he immediately agreed. Kaylin said the hospital has an area that is not used very often but is also very good for living, electricity, and water are also working. Not to mention it's very convenient for Kaylin to go back and forth to take care of Egan. It is often said that the most dangerous place is the safest place. So Egan didn't want to move to another location. He thinks that as long as he is careful and careful, he can avoid the eyes of snoopers everywhere. And Egan can neither forget nor deny that there is a very personal reason for his decision. That's why Egan wanted to be here so he could see Vera more easily. For some reason, Egan thought seeing Vera in his sights would reassure him.
"Don't you think that would be a double-action?" After thinking for a minute, Egan finally replied: "It's easy to have doubts about moving. What's more, I don't want to cause trouble for the female doctor when I have to travel long distances just to check my condition. ."
Egan's reason is completely reasonable and convincing. However, Eric was still not satisfied, he decided to press Egan more:
"Besides the above surely you have other motives?" Eric shot suspicious eyes at Egan. He made no secret and confessed:
"As you're speculating. I'd love to see Vera Taylor with my own eyes."
"So you're admitting that you're attracted to that girl." Eric had a chance to tease at Egan's frank admission: "You really got hit by a loving blow caused by Vera Taylor."
Eric smiled at his very firm conclusion.
Again Egan did not shy away from giving an answer, he answered very seriously:
"Anyone is curious about someone when they feel that person is different from the people they have interacted with and known before." Egan further explains: "I think that applies to my case."
Eric stopped arguing with Egan's neat, well-meaning finish. There was no way Eric could get back to peeling fruit.
Meanwhile, Egan had finished eating the apple and he asked for more: "Pie me another one."
Eric was about to bring the apple he had just peeled to his mouth, but Egan asked for it, so he reluctantly gave it to Egan. Eric had to struggle to peel another apple for himself. Feeling lost, Eric bit the apple even though it was not peeled.
A silence.
Referring to Vera Taylor, Egan suggested again to continue the discussion:
"What was the outcome of the investigation on her?" Egan suddenly asked about Vera causing Eric who didn't want to talk about it to sigh bitterly. He learned the latest news about Vera and felt sorry for a girl's fate.
Realizing that Egan was very focused waiting, In a sad voice, Eric was forced to reveal to Egan:
"She escaped from the hospital."
The news shocked Egan, he reacted so strongly that the wound hurt.
"What did you say?" Egan exclaimed in disbelief: "How can that be, I'll see her this afternoon."
"Well..." Eric hesitated, he didn't know what to say to make Egan less agitated.
"Hurry up say something." Egan urged, "Don't make me nervous. There's no way Vera is leaving here."
It's hard to believe this kind of news if we don't find out the reason why Egan will go crazy.
Not wanting to disappoint Egan or wait too long, Eric became serious again, he began to tell Egan.
"This afternoon when I returned to the hospital, I heard that she had escaped from the hospital." Eric calmly explained more clearly: "I personally went to her room to confirm. She is indeed no longer there."
"Why?" Egan wondered why, why did Vera run away: "He was in peace, suddenly left?"
"Probably because I can't pay the hospital bills." Eric conjectured to let Egan think more freely: "She probably didn't want to receive other people's pity, so she decided to do so."
"But didn't we pay for her hospital bills?" Egan argued: "Is it because she didn't know about it that she thought the amount paid for her services had not been paid?"
"Perhaps as you say." Eric agreed, but Egan immediately denied:
"It can't be that simple. There must be another reason right?" Egan shows his sharp reasoning ability: "It could be an emergency."
"I don't know, maybe as you say, she has a reason." Eric agrees with Egan's inference: "Either she received urgent news, the matter is urgent, so she leaves quickly."
Eric himself also had the same thoughts as Egan about Vera suddenly leaving the hospital. But he wasn't sure yet.
"Is there any way to find her now?" Egan asks worriedly, he doesn't want to lose Vera's track. At the hospital Egan can see and see. But when I leave here, I'm afraid it will be difficult.
"I think so." Eric said that made Egan's face light up, then Eric revealed: "This afternoon a man claiming to be her father came and made a fuss at the hospital."
"Is that the case?" Egan was also surprised by the puzzling behavior of the man who claimed to be Vera's father: "Why did he mess up?"
Eric shrugs lightly, pretending not to comment on Enoch's behavior, then goes on to add:
"According to some nurses, by the time the man came to find Vera, she had already left the hospital. And the reason the man was upset was that Vera was not found in the room."
The more Eric spoke, the more confused Egan became. The truth is that it is difficult to explain properly. Ignoring the story of the man who claimed to be Vera's father, Eric urged Egan to get back to the heart of the matter.
"I looked at the security camera, it showed that Vera was in a hurry to leave, still in a bad condition and her mentality is not stable at all. It seems that she is panicking, insecure. ."
"What do you mean when you say Vera left in a bad mood?" Egan questioned: "Is it related to the man who claims to be her father?"
Indeed, Egan is very flexible in thinking. Just by chaining the facts he had a questionable question of great interest and in need of immediate inquiry.
"I can't be sure right now." "But I'll continue to investigate further, starting with the man, maybe we'll find Vera," said Eric helplessly.
"Proceed as soon as possible. I want to know about her as quickly as possible." Egan urged impatiently. Honestly, Egan didn't know why when he heard the bad news about Vera, he had an uncomfortable feeling in his chest. A bad premonition appeared and decided to stick around inside him.
"I will try my best." Eric took the order and immediately proceeded. Eric planned to wait until tomorrow, but when he saw Egan's worried expression he changed his plans.
Eric quickly called his men, trying to find information about a man named Enoch Mark. The name he had just picked up from the person on duty at the front desk.
The night passed and Egan was tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Where is Vera now? Is she okay? Does anyone care to take care of her? Egan was so bothered by those anxious questions that when he closed his eyes the image of Vera appeared in his mind again.
Wishing good things to Vera, Egan whispered to him. He prayed that Vera would be lucky to find a good person to help her.
While Egan was thinking about Vera and worrying about her, in another place Lani and his father were still eating, drinking, and sleeping soundly before Vera's disappearance. They didn't bother to think whether Vera here now, had enough to eat or not?
And the answer to all of those questions was that Vera lay unconscious on the cold ground, still not waking up.
