Chapter 7: Vera Wakes Up
After the surgery, Egan was taken to the intensive care unit, while Vera was taken to the recovery room. The surgery was a success as expected, although it had to go through a very long and stressful time. There was a time when Egan's heartbeat almost disappeared from the world. But in the end by the miracle of God, the doctor saved his life. Vera also remained stable throughout the procedure. Everyone thought that once the will to survive disappeared, Vera would give up, leaving herself to fate. Unexpectedly, Vera fought hard and overcame difficulties.
Everything was arranged very well. It was a great joy for both Vera and Egan.
Up to now, after three days of experiencing the moment of near-death, no one has known about Egan's bad luck. It was as if the news of the accident had been quickly suppressed by someone using their influence. As for Vera, not to mention, no one remembers her absence. People were still indifferent and happy, and if she left her alive, she could live or die.
On the fourth day, Vera finally woke up.
Before that, when Vera lay unconscious. In that coma, a struggle takes place in the mind. She half wanted to die, half didn't want to die. Vera is only 22 years old and has a lot of unfinished business. God, please don't make her die, she was wrong to have the guilty thought of wanting to end her life without permission. Vera knew her mistake and begged God's forgiveness. In the darkness of her dream, Vera found herself floating in the air, not a single light penetrated, her whole body helpless, a avoid avoid, death was just like this? Should she feel at peace, close her damned life, peacefully leave, or should she regret the days of a meaningless life? Vera doesn't agree, why did fate treat her like that? Why does she always take injustice on herself? Why is she different from everyone else, she doesn't want to be like that, what's wrong with being true to herself? Do people need to live fake with each other to find happiness? Vera did not submit ten thousand times, she never complained about anything, but now she resented the damned fate, it should die that God gave her.
Vera struggled a lot with the intense thought that If only she could live again. She will not let herself live a mediocre life, will try harder, be braver, but is there still another chance? Who will give her a chance now...?
Although she didn't know what to do, an invisible force pushed her forward, where the light was welcoming. Perhaps it was her mother again, the image of her smile imprinted in Vera's mind even until now.
Just like that, Vera's body drifted toward the light, where there was sure to be life, faith, and hope.
Everything ahead is getting closer and closer to Vera. Suddenly a familiar voice entered her ear, startling Vera:
"Are you okay?"
Is it the mother? Vera whispered inside subconsciously. That affectionate voice, how is it like her mother's, is it her? So she's dead. Was her mother calling her to wake up to the view of heaven? Suddenly she felt happy, there was nothing to complain about anymore, when she was reunited with her mother, then God was too good to her. Vera is not asking for a second chance at life again. Vera wanted to see her mother so she tried her best to open her lazy eyes that were still tightly closed, slowly opening them. She saw a woman in her thirties staring at her, she smiled gently and said.
"She's finally calm."
Her dreamy eyes suddenly became strangely clear, something was wrong, wouldn't she see her mother when she opened her eyes? Where's her mother, why...?
Looking at her panicked face, the woman softened her voice, gently touching Vera's pale face: "Are you okay? How are you feeling? Can you hear me? If you can hear me. please show me the reaction. You can blink if you hear me talking."
Ignoring the nurse's other request, Vera couldn't hide her current thoughts and blurted out a question.
"Where is this? Who are you? Are you dead too?" Vera talked nonsense, making the other side bewildered. For her part, Vera thinks that she is in another world, and this is where the final judgment of the creator awaits. Good people go to heaven, bad people go to purgatory. Vera hopes that while she is alive she has not committed a sin so serious, so great, that she will lose her ticket to heaven.
The woman was dumbfounded as she watched the change in Vera's expression. From start to finish Vera shows only a very unsettling flatness.
What did Vera just say? The nurse wondered, She looked at Vera as if she were a different person. But wait, maybe Vera is mentally unstable. That was the nurse's conclusion.
"Ma'am, please calm down. Don't overthink it." The nurse advised Vera: "Thinking bad things will affect your recovery. Let your mind be at peace."
Hearing an answer that was beyond my expectations, also caused a bit of confusion. Vera found it difficult to understand, she had to personally look around the room to find out what was the truth. There are windows, white curtains, hospital beds, medical equipment... After a few seconds of a general assessment of the situation, she finally realized, this is neither heaven nor hell. She's not dead, she's in the hospital. The white color inside the room contrasts with the yellow of the sun that is creeping into the room, making the room less of its inherent cold. There was a slight warmth, the smell of antiseptic wafted in the air. Vera retracted her gaze after learning the fact that she was still on earth. So God gave her another chance instead of allowing her to see her mother again. Vera wondered if she was happy? Should you be happy or sad? Feeling Disappointed? No answer. Everything was empty from Vera's mind to her heart.
Inhaling some air into her lungs and slowly releasing it, Vera tried to absorb what was going on. Vera seems to have forgotten something. Exactly, Vera had forgotten that this was what she had been begging for before the operation took place. At that time, she prayed for herself to continue living. That's right, Vera changed her will so she died to pray to God that both she and the other man could live.
And Vera's prayer was answered by God.
It was a blessing, Vera felt herself to be grateful for, and of course, she would gladly accept it.
Turning back to the young woman, she kept staring at Vera, with a worried look on her friendly face.
"Are you okay?" inquired the nurse as she caught Vera's gaze fixed on her.
Is Vera's spirit okay? Is it a side effect of the surgery? Oh, don't forget Vera operated on to remove one of her kidneys, not her brain. So her mind was still dizzy, but it was completely normal.
The person in front of Vera was a nurse, she was patiently waiting for Vera's next reaction before deciding whether to call the doctor or not.
"Is this a hospital?" Vera was silent for a long time before she spoke up.
"Right." The nurse exclaimed, she unconsciously breathed a sigh of relief when Vera confirmed how different things were in real life and dreams: "This is a hospital."
Looking at Vera's bewildered face, the nurse probed further:
"Do you remember what happened to you? How did you get here, for example?"
"Why am I here?" Vera asked the opposite question to the opponent. Everything in Vera's head was so messy right now, it needed to be sorted out. And to do that she needed time. It would be better for her to start recalling the incident after getting enough rest than trying to hasten the process. Recalling what happened was not really necessary in this situation.
"We'll look into that later." The nurse closed the short interview by reminding Vera: "You should rest now."
Vera was calmer, wanted to know how she got here. In her headache, she could only remember vaguely. The last thing she saw was a car flying over her head.
"Do you know something? Can you tell me?" Vera looked earnestly at the nurse imploringly
"It's a long story, I don't know how it happened either." The nurse smiled wryly as she answered Vera. Don't forget to ask: "You don't remember anything?"
Vera brainstormed, summoning her memories, but unfortunately, they didn't appear. It seems that Vera is not ready to remember the unpleasant, frankly, painful things she went through. After a moment of waiting, Cai shook her head slowly from side to side, causing the nurse to frown.
"I'm not sure, right now my head is empty." Vera added: "I feel like everything is very vague."
It seems that Vera's case is mentally unrecovered. Maybe Vera needs a lot of rest. But can not rush to conclusions, need to wait for the results of the doctor's examination. Hopefully, Vera doesn't have any unexpected problems, like temporary memory loss.
"You just need to rest first, then slowly remember everything later." The nurse stopped her action to check on Vera's condition with the reminder: "There's plenty of time, so don't worry. The doctors will help her recover soon."
"Yes, thank you very much." Vera smiled back.
"So, now you should rest. The doctor will come to check on you shortly." The nurse said, helping Vera adjust her position so that it is comfortable: "Do you want me to raise the bed a little bit?"
"No." Vera said: "I want to lie like this."
"Okay then, I'll go out." The nurse warned her: "Anything please call me."
"I know."
Then the nurse left the room. Vera took a deep breath, a little stinging at the site of the kidney surgery.
So I donated a kidney and didn't die. Vera felt herself a little relieved, at the same time worried about her tomorrow. What will her future be? Starting from this point, she didn't lose everything, had to start over with empty hands. The main, most worrying issue was where she would be after she was discharged from the hospital. Who pays hospital fees? Vera felt her headache with so many questions piling up. Her future is really difficult to say.
More or less good or bad, it will definitel be hard. Vera decided to put aside all thoughts, first she needed to rest, recover her health and then calculate later. Vera believes that good people will be rewarded.
...
Lani had managed to raise enough money and was ready for a meeting with the traffickers. She had to lie to Ken that because Vera had borrowed money from the gangsters to spend, and forced her to pay the debt instead. Lani weptly complained that Vera's actions were unacceptable. The gangsters called to blackmail, threatening to kill Lani if she didn't pay. Vera ran away without a trace, so Lani had to take the responsibility for her heartless sister. Hearing that, Ken was indignant on behalf of the person he loved, he silently cursed the bad thing that happened to Vera. He also swore that if he met Vera, he would punish her for daring to cause trouble and trouble for his Lani, even threatening Lani's life. Oh, Ken is such a stupid man who only knows how to fall in love with the beauty of a fox disguised as Lani. But admitting Lani is very cunning, lying when blaming all the blame on Vera's head. Lani easily changed her name with just a few simple sentences, added good acting, and finally used her body to prove the accusation against Vera was true. It is worth mentioning that Ken believed everything Lani said without doubting or questioning smart enough to detect loopholes. Don't wonder or be surprised how Lani manipulates Ken as well as the other men. Lani used her innocent innocent appearance to seduce men. Lani also generously allowed the men who were attracted to her to feel free to touch her. Lani lives very carelessly, no matter what tomorrow brings. Lani likes to go head-to-head in the mud and she always brings Vera out like a cannon fodder for the bad deeds she's done.
After finishing the call with the traffickers about the meeting place, Lani comfortably went to bed. Everything would work out eventually, Lani believed. And again Vera will be hated by everyone, not Lani. A triumphant smile put Lani into a deep sleep.
