Chapter 13 We're Done

Evelyn’s POV

"Grandma!" I exclaimed as I raced through the halls of Wyatt's mansion, arriving beside her bed with breathless urgency. Her face lit up with a gentle smile upon seeing me.

"Oh dear, come here," she beckoned.

I nodded and took a seat next to her, clutching her hand in mine.

Wyatt's grandmother was one of the few souls who had shown me genuine kindness. As a hybrid of a werewolf and a human, I had often felt out of place, but she had taken me under her wing, teaching me how to be a qualified Alpha. I owed her more than I could express.

"I was so worried about you." I confessed, softly stroking her hand.

"My poor child, I worry about you too," she replied, her voice tinged with concern as she sighed deeply.

"Grandma, I'm doing well," I reassured her with a smile. Since moving away, I have found a measure of happiness.

"Evelyn, it’s just the two of us now, so tell me the truth," Grandma said, her voice weakening into a cough. She squeezed my hand. "Is there something wrong between you and Wyatt? Why does everyone say you’re no longer living together?”

Someone had evidently informed her of the situation. Her frail health had kept her in a sanatorium deep in the forest, and I had hoped Wyatt would prepare her before she found out from someone else.

I hesitated, not wanting to cause her any distress. Lying would only complicate matters further, requiring more fabrications to support the falsehood.

"It’s not like that, Grandma..." I began, my eyes darting to the medical instruments around her, the weight of sadness pressing down on me.

"Grandma!" Just then, Wyatt entered the room. His presence immediately brought a sense of relief. He embraced me tightly.

"Sweetheart, this is for you," he said, presenting a beautifully wrapped box. He carefully placed a diamond necklace around my neck, its sparkle catching the soft light of the room.

Grandma turned to me with a sorrowful expression.

"But... this sounds so heartbreaking."

"The girl, Judy, is a new artist I've signed at my company," he explained, glancing between me and Grandma. As he spoke, he closed the distance between us and wrapped his arms around my waist. I stiffened, unwilling to be so close, yet I forced a smile to prevent Grandma from sensing the tension.

"Now that there’s been a misunderstanding, that woman needs to be held accountable. And I won’t allow anyone to spread rumors," Wyatt declared with a protective fierceness that took me by surprise.

"So that's how it is," Grandma said, visibly relieved. She coughed a few times, her frailty more evident than ever. When her gaze returned to me, there was a flicker of concern. "It's not good that the Alpha bloodline you carry is at risk of ending, Evelyn," her voice filled with concern as she gently held my hand.

"I understand," I replied, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze.

"Don't worry, Grandma," Wyatt added with a comforting smile.

"Well, we should get going, Grandma. You know how busy Alphas can be," he said, his smile never wavering as he tugged me gently by the hand.

Reluctantly, I maintained my grip, playing along for Grandma's sake, though inside, I was reeling.

"Goodbye, my dears. I hope to see you again soon," Grandma said, nodding at us warmly.

As soon as we were out of her sight, I pulled free from Wyatt's hold and stepped back, fighting the urge to run. He reached out to me, a sincere look softening his features.

"Thank you for your help. Otherwise, Grandma would have been heartbroken," I managed a strained smile.

"You don’t need to thank me, Evelyn," he replied, his tone devoid of its usual arrogance. He watched me with a look of mixed emotions, a vulnerability I had never seen in him before.

It was utterly unexpected.

Wyatt had never shown such a side to himself.

Wyatt's POV

Evelyn slipped off her necklace and pressed it into my palm.

"Stop being stubborn. You know these things will make..." I started to protest.

"I know Grandma will be upset, but she deserves the truth. We are breaking up, aren't we?" Evelyn's gaze was serious, leaving no room for doubt.

But that couldn't be right. She had always been so close to me; I never imagined that could change.

"I shouldn't have done it. My thing with Judy—it wasn't serious," I said, holding her hand and trying to muster a reassuring smile.

"Grandma's better now, and I want to give you that piece of land... If you come back to me, we can pretend this never happened, okay?" I suggested in a soft voice.

She just stood there, studying me quietly.

Something was different. She had never looked at me like this before.

A sharp pain stabbed at my chest.

"It's too late for that now, Wyatt. Wouldn't it have been nice if you had said this sooner?" She sighed and chuckled sadly.

"
"Too late? What do you mean? Evelyn!" I called after her, but she didn’t turn around, just walked straight toward the exit.

"Find out who told Grandma about this and kick them out of the Pack," I ordered the Beta next to me, my voice rough as I stared at the hole I'd punched in the wall, trying to steady my breathing.

"And find out all the men that Luna is involved with!”
