Chapter 21 The Truth
Wyatt's POV
I was still puzzled. What had I missed exactly? Running out of options, I could only stare at Ben and Evelyn, trying to get a clue from what had happened lately.
From what I'd heard, there was no connection between them. But now it seemed I was completely wrong.
They looked so chummy as if they had known each other for decades.
Ben fixed his gaze on Evelyn's face, solemnly explaining, "Alpha Evelyn's here for that lode." His henchman stepped forward and handed Evelyn an invitation.
"Here, Alpha Evelyn. This is your invitation. We came across it by chance," the man said loud enough for everyone present to hear.
No one dared to doubt her anymore. The invitation said it all. She was a true Alpha who got invited here, not some loser tagging along another guest.
But I still felt something was off.
"Thank you so much. I wouldn't know what to do without it," Evelyn smiled before accepting it. Then she exchanged a glance with Ben.
Strangely, judging from their expressions, they weren't that close. And they kept their distance from each other this whole time.
Then a thought struck me. I wondered, 'Perhaps, Ben's helping her cuz she's my ex-wife. He might even hope that I could patch things up with her. Well, glad that I got a best friend who knows me so well. Besides, Ben's a gentleman. His good nature wouldn't allow him to turn a blind eye while Judy was finding fault with Evelyn.'
Snapping back to reality, I walked over to Evelyn, wrapping my arm around her shoulders. Following her gaze, I locked eyes with Ben, too.
"Thanks, dude." I smiled at him.
All of a sudden, he scowled. But I believed it had nothing to do with me.
'C'mon, he's my best friend! No way that he'd be mad at me,' I told myself inwardly. Then I just left him be.
"See, Evelyn? Even after the divorce, I still care about you." I turned my head, looking at the stiffened Evelyn in my arms.
I could feel her gently wriggling in my embrace. Clearly, she was desperate to pull away.
But she gotta face the reality—I wouldn't let go.
With a smile, I slowly leaned close to her ear. "You don't want Grandma to know that we're divorced, right? Listen, behave yourself, and I can get your brother's meds sent immediately," I whispered only loud enough for her to hear.
She stiffened upon hearing my words. Then she stopped struggling and stared at me, picking up the invitation in her hand.
"But now I gotta attend the party," she told me.
I thought to myself, 'You think you can get away from me with this lame excuse? Nice try.'
"Oh, yeah? I'll go with you then," I quickly replied, extending my hand to her.
Without hesitation, she pushed my hand away and strode off, leaving me behind.
"You better sort out your lover first," she said.
Thrilled, I convinced myself inwardly, 'She still cares about me! Or she wouldn't be so angry. She must've been jealous, craving my full attention. Well, I get that.'
I seemed to hear my wolf howling excitedly in my mind. The thought of her still hanging up on me was so overwhelming, almost making me lose control. I watched her figure shrink in my view, a smile curving my lips.
When she completely disappeared around the corner, my smile faded.
I turned my head to look at Judy, who stood beside me. Never had I felt so disgusted by her.
"So, you're not that into acting in the movie, huh?" I questioned her.
Judy's POV
I looked at Wyatt's expression seriously, trying hard to put on a pitiful face.
Hell, I'd never seen him angrier than he was now. He even started to loathe me.
This was the last thing I wanted to see. After all, he was the Alpha. If I really pissed him off, I'd be toast.
I collapsed on the floor, panic seizing me. Then I reached out, desperately holding onto his leg while crying even harder than before.
"Sorry, Alpha. I was just too scared," I explained. That was the best excuse I could think of— blaming everything on Evelyn.
"I trust Evelyn. She wouldn't do such things," Wyatt looked down at me, almost growling.
"What? So are you implying that I'm the liar here? I guess in your eyes, she's always better than me, huh?" I screamed uncontrollably.
Did all my efforts mean nothing?
"Yes or no." Wyatt finally spared me a glance, but he didn't help me up like he usually would.
"Alpha, what do you mean?" I was totally puzzled.
"You're not even qualified to compare with her, get it?" He pushed me away resolutely.
"She's my only Luna," he added.
'No way. I thought he was starting to accept me!' I denied it inwardly. A sharp pain ran through my chest, so I couldn't help slumping to the ground again.
"That's not true! You said you liked my body that day!" I started screaming even more loudly.
But it only fueled his rage.
"Mention that day again, and I'll get the surveillance footage and throw you in the werewolf prison. Then you'll know the consequences of lying to me!" he hissed.
I felt like I had fallen into an icy pit. I had to hug myself to stop my body from shivering.
I knew better than anyone else what I had done. On Wyatt's birthday, I drugged his food. That was why he'd mistaken me for Evelyn and made out with me. Even when he was taking off my clothes, he was cooing Evelyn's name.
I was fully aware of what I'd face if that was exposed—I would be banished from the Pack and become a rogue!
"Alpha, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have bad-mouthed Evelyn!" I apologized.
As I pointed my finger towards the sky, I looked up at him, trying to appear as sincere as possible. "I swear to the Moon Goddess I'll never bring this up again."
"Go back. Think about what you should do," Wyatt demanded as he walked towards the direction Evelyn had left. He didn't even look back.
