Chapter 17 Unexpected to be Late

Evelyn’s POV

"What's wrong? Did something happen?" I repeatedly dialed Alex’s number until he finally answered.

He was always punctual, so his delay was unexpected.

"Where have you been?”

"I'm so sorry, Ms. Evelyn," Alex's voice came through, anxious and strained. The bustling noise in the background made it clear he was in the midst of chaos.

"The car broke down... I think it's the terrible weather we've been having," he continued.

"Okay, I understand. Just take care of it. I’ll handle things here." I hung up, resigned.

Complaining wouldn't help the situation.

I would have made it to the airport on time under normal circumstances, but now I was bound to be late. This delay was almost catastrophic.

What could I do? Stranded, I realized the next flight wasn’t for a few days. By then, my mineral order might be canceled, leaving my Pack defenseless against the madness disease.

Just then, a car honked behind me, and I instinctively turned.

"I can give you a ride," Bennett called out, rolling down his window to reveal his face.

This wasn't ideal. He was a prominent Alpha, and any delay caused by me could be costly for his pack.

"It's not necessary, I..." I began, eager to avoid further complications. "I can figure something out."

At that moment, a group of young people with backpacks approached. One of them stopped, staring at Bennett before starting to scream.

"Look, it's Alpha Bennett! He's the most handsome Alpha I've ever seen,"

"Who is this woman?" another voice chimed in.

"Oh, wait, isn't she Alpha Wyatt's wife? She just..."

It had been relatively quiet here before their arrival, but now more people began to gather.

They mentioned Wyatt again, and I could already guess what they were going to say.

This wasn't a good thing; I didn't want to attract so much attention at the moment. But there was no time to hide anymore.

"If you don't get in the car right now, more people will come," Bennett's voice urged, pressing like a ticking time bomb.

"Fine! I guess you're right," I said, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath.

Even though he was Alpha Bennett, he wouldn't dare to harm me. I opened the car door and climbed in with my luggage.

"I need to go to the airport, thank you very much," I said sincerely, looking at him.

"Breakfast." he said, lifting a bag and handing it to me.

"Oh! Thank you so much. When I come back, I'll definitely visit and thank you properly," I tried to smile at him.

Was this his own breakfast? If so, then he had really gone out of his way to help me.

He drove attentively, and I couldn't help but stare at him. My gaze fell on his cufflinks.

They were of such a special design, clearly beyond ordinary craftsmanship. I had definitely seen something similar before.

To be precise, it looked just like the cufflink I found on the bed that day. The shape was very unique, certainly not something you would come across randomly. Even though I wasn't usually interested in such things, I knew these cufflinks were definitely very expensive.

I thought, 'So, what's the deal with that guy? Is his identity even real?'

"You seem to have some doubts," Bennett's voice broke the silence in the car.

Had he noticed my lingering gaze? It seemed there was no longer a way to hide my suspicions.

"Well, yes... I'm curious about the price of your cufflinks," I said, clenching my fists and taking a deep breath.

"These are from a new collection by Alvaloria, not yet released in this country," Bennett explained, turning to look at me.

"Ms. Evelyn, are you interested in them as well?”

He seemed to be smiling, but it sent a chill down my spine. I knew where this line of questioning was heading—it wasn't within a price range any ordinary person could afford, let alone a male prostitute. This suggested another, more unsettling possibility.

I had no idea how to respond. If Bennett was indeed masquerading as someone else, the revelation would be devastating. I'd want to flee the city, never to stray from the safety of my Pack again.

As the airport came into view at the end of the road, I felt a wave of relief. "Thank you very much for the ride, sincerely," I smiled at him, eager to escape the confines of the car.

But the whole situation nagged at me—how had things come to this? Could Alex really be hiding something from me?
