Chapter 8 A New Life

Alex's POV

"The Moon Goddess! Why would Bennett call me now?" I muttered, skepticism coloring my voice as I answered the phone. "Alpha, what can I do for you?”

This was unusual. Bennett rarely reached out directly since I had started working for Evelyn.

"You... wow."

I glanced up, spotting Bennett's car parked right in front of me. I hurried over, a knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach. Although Bennett's face was obscured, the set of his jaw told me he was in a foul mood.

Something was off. It had to be about Evelyn—I hadn't seen her since the banquet earlier. Could Bennett be upset because of her improving relations with Wyatt? If so, this was serious.

I needed to tread carefully. "Alpha, should I contact Evelyn now?" I ventured.

Bennett's expression remained icy, but he offered no objection. That was confirmation enough for me. I dialed Evelyn's number and she answered promptly.

"Ms. Evelyn, as agreed, the male escort is waiting for you in the villa area," I said, choosing my voice even as I stole a glance at Bennett.

I couldn't afford to upset either of them. My words were measured, careful. Bennett had driven us to Evelyn's house, and now we awaited her reply.

"When will you be home? I'll have him get ready," I continued.

"I won't be coming home tonight. There are still some matters I need to attend to," Evelyn snapped, her tone edged with irritation before she abruptly ended the call.

I relayed the conversation to Bennett, trying to soften the blow with a reassuring smile. His face darkened, a storm brewing in his eyes, making the air in the car thick and stifling.

"Alpha, should I call her again?" I asked tentatively.

"No need. I'm heading over right now," he stated flatly, swinging the car door open.

"You won't get a definite answer from her," he added, his voice grim.

His words rang true, yet I knew this approach was flawed. With Bennett here, Evelyn's sudden return would reveal his presence—and mine as his planted spy.

"Don't! Alpha, please don't! If you suddenly appear, she'll know I'm the spy you placed by her side!" Panic seized me, my voice rising in desperation as I reached out to stop him. I was beyond caring if my actions would anger him further.

He ignored my plea, slamming the car door as he stepped into the looming darkness.

Evelyn’s POV

"Evelyn, who were you talking to just now?" Wyatt asked, turning his head to look at me with a mix of suspicion and anger, as if I were still his wife.

If our marriage were still intact, I would have felt obligated to explain. It was these kinds of misunderstandings that disrupted my focus when I managed pack affairs under his roof.

But now... it's different. My life no longer intertwines with his, so why does he still look at me that way?

However, since maintaining a cordial relationship with him was crucial today, I forced a friendly tone. "It was Alex. You know him. I have to handle pack matters at any time," I said earnestly.

By the Moon Goddess! I was growing weary of his relentless questioning.

"Is that so? You don't look like you're discussing work," Wyatt chuckled darkly before turning back to the road.

Wyatt's POV

It's hard not to suspect Evelyn. We are divorced now—no longer tied by marriage.

Evelyn's POV

I struggled to focus on Wyatt's words.

What was he thinking? We were divorced now. There was no bond between us, and thanks to him, my pack was now in jeopardy!

If it weren't for the necessity of keeping things civil, I might have confronted him directly. But for now, I had to control my emotions.

I should have let go of any false hopes when I signed that divorce agreement. Although it seemed fair on paper, deep down I knew Wyatt wouldn't let me go so easily.

"We've already signed the divorce agreement and agreed to part ways amicably, haven't we? Why are you still behaving like this?" I cut him off, frustration seeping into my voice as I stared at his face—a face that once enthralled me but now only repelled me.

"You have no right to meddle in my life anymore. If you’re so inclined, we can schedule a time to announce our divorce publicly.”

"What? Absolutely not. You are my Luna, and you can only ever be my Luna!" Wyatt's eyes flared with a wild intensity.

"I don't understand, Evelyn. You used to adore me." He reached for my hand, but I pushed him away firmly.

Wyatt insisted, "How could you not be happy with me? I swear to the Moon Goddess, I will never hurt you again."

"The way you're acting right now would make me wonder if you're really in love with me." It was so hard for me that I couldn't even help but laugh.

"But Wyatt, think about it, do you really love me? Or are you just not happy to see this scene?" I retorted.

Wyatt completely froze and just looked at me as if he didn't even expect me to ask that question.

"Evelyn, I'm sorry, I ......" He wasn't able to answer my question right away at all.

I'll admit that Wyatt looked a little pathetic right now, but I wasn't going to sympathize with him anymore. In fact, I don't even want to look at him anymore.

"Come back to me when you want to have a proper conversation about what's working between us." I replied and quickly pulled away from the car.

"Goodbye, Alpha Wyatt." I murmured.
