Chapter 14 It's Over for You
Bennett's POV
I knew Evelyn was nearby; I couldn't bring myself to leave. Her familiar scent lingered in the air, and I was desperate to see her just once more before departing.
As her scent grew stronger, I found myself irresistibly drawn in her direction.
"Watch out!" Evelyn exclaimed as she collided directly into me, her body leaning against mine for a brief moment.
I instinctively reached out to steady her, but quickly let go.
I longed to hold her as I had that night, but I knew it was impossible. I had to keep my distance, or else these overwhelming feelings would become unmanageable.
"Alpha Bennett! I am so sorry!" Evelyn looked up at me, her eyes wide with panic. She took a step back, only to misstep off the stairs.
Instinctively, I reached out and grabbed her arm, preventing her fall.
She lowered her gaze to my cuff, fixating on it for a few moments.
I had hoped she would notice the cufflinks— and she did.
Her expression changed subtly, a sign she realized something was amiss.
"Well, goodbye." She said with a smile, though her confusion was poorly masked.
"Goodbye." I replied.
I watched her walk away from the estate. In the distance, I could still hear the echoes of Wyatt's fury. It was easy to imagine the confrontation that must have occurred between him and Evelyn.
I was now certain that Wyatt had prepared that piece of land for her as a gesture.
But under the current circumstances, I knew Evelyn would never accept anything from Wyatt. Her hasty exit was undoubtedly spurred by whatever Wyatt had said about the land.
That meant the land would inevitably be mine.
"Hey, Bennett!" Wyatt's voice echoed from a distance. I turned to see him approaching.
"I knew it, you haven't left yet!" Wyatt clapped a hand on my shoulder, his voice lacking its usual confidence and tinged with panic.
"Join me for a drink. My Luna is having a baby with another man." Wyatt suggested.
"Of course." I nodded, giving his shoulder a reassuring pat.
The whole situation was overwhelming. Although Wyatt had divorced Evelyn, it was just a few days ago that she was still his wife.
But a drink could temporarily push those thoughts away.
"I don’t understand why she did that. Am I not a good man? Why did she have to find someone else?" Wyatt vented loudly, slumping back in his chair in the wine cellar. The alcohol seemed to amplify his distress.
I reflected on his recent actions. His public appearances with that actress had spoken volumes.
He had turned Evelyn into a laughingstock, and under those circumstances, it was hard to believe he still had feelings for her.
"If Evelyn means so much to you, then why did you do those things?" I asked, meeting his gaze.
"I just want her to understand my feeling, that she can't ignore me like this." Wyatt patted his chest.
"Besides, I could have saved her life back then! How can she doubt me?"
I frowned. I don't think it was really him who saved Evelyn.
"Really? But it seems to me that the two of you don't fit together at all." I finished the rest of the wine in my glass in one gulp, then stood up.
"If there's nothing else, I'm going back to work." I replied nonchalantly.
There was no point in me continuing to discuss this with him anymore. He wouldn't realize that he was missing out on such a nice girl.
"Hey Ben! What's wrong with you! Get back here! You tell me what's going on!" Wyatt continued to yell desperately. But I'm completely done trying to ignore him.
