Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Two

Kelley watched as paramedics loaded a still unconscious Steel onto a gurney and set up an IV of fluids, checked his vitals and then wheeled him out of the room. He followed them down the hall and walked into his study.
“Send someone with Steel, do not leave him to wake up in that hospital alone,” Kelley ordered and sat down behind his desk.
"We need to get a move on this. Check the cameras ... I'll speak to the guards at the gate. How the fuck did nobody notice anything?" Connor's voice was loud and angry. Kelley could relate, he was furious.
He moved the mouse as Connor pulled his phone out again and the laptop screen came to life. The video on the screen was paused where Norah had her hand under her skirt with Kelley standing in front of his desk, watching her. He slammed his fist down on his desk, making Connor turn to face him.
“What?”
“She’s not missing … she ran,” Kelley said and leaned back in his seat.
"She ran?" Connor was frowning, clearly not understanding the situation.
Kelley’s phone rang and he looked at the familiar name on his screen. “Black?” Connor's frown deepened and anger exploded in his eyes and he clenched his fists tightly.
“I’m in a car behind Milana, we’re almost in St. John’s City. She’s alone in an Uber,” Black said.
“You escaped?”
Black chuckled. “It wasn’t hard and I didn’t even hurt anyone. Saw Milana with a suitcase as I rounded the perimeter and started following her.”
“Can I trust you this time to keep eyes on her?”
“This is a clean phone, you know that. You can track me if you really want to but I’ll keep eyes on her,” Black said.
“Call me when she settles in somewhere,” Kelley said and ended the call.
“How the hell did he get out of his cell?” Connor asked with surprise in his eyes.
“I don’t care at this point. He’s got eyes on Milana, she’s headed to St. John’s City,” Kelley replied.
“Why is she running, Kelley?”
Kelley turned the laptop around and Connor shook his head as he looked at the paused image of Norah on her knees. “Are you going after her?”
“Not yet,” Kelley said.
Connor’s eyebrows went up in question but he didn’t ask why. Kelley was pissed off now. She had no idea what she’d seen on that recording but he didn’t care. She took off at the first hurdle, despite her words of loving him.
“Have Blaire block her card. Let’s see how well she does on her own, without my money to pave her way,” Kelley said.
“Kelley …”
“Every choice you make has repercussions, Connor, it’s time my wife learned that.”
“Are you sure that’s what you want to do?”
“No, Connor, I’m not sure about anything. I’m pissed off and I’m fucking tired of always having to defend myself. She ran. She didn’t wait to talk to me about what she saw. She’s made her choice now she’s got to fucking live with it!”
“You’re the boss,” Connor said.
“Yes, I am.”
Connor left his study and Kelley moved the video to a secure folder that couldn’t be accessed by anyone other than him. He should’ve done it sooner, but he got sidetracked. Kelley Alexander didn’t beg, no man, no woman and certainly not a wife. He could wait, his patience truly was a virtue. He was angrier than he'd been in a long time. His own fucking wife chose not to believe in him, it stung but Kelley would wait. He'd make her life miserable before giving in.
Kelley sat in his office until the sun made way for darkness and he grinned when he realized the irony of it. The light of his study was switched on by Lee and Mason closed the door behind him. They sat down in the chairs in front of his desk and just waited.
“What?” Kelley asked after a few minutes of silence.
“Connor told us what happened,” Mason began.
“So?”
“So?” Lee asked. “Go get her back. Tell her what happened. Let her watch the whole video. It’s just a stupid misunderstanding.”
Kelley sighed and stretched his arms. “I’m done groveling, I’m done taking hits from all sides. I’m just fucking done, okay.”
“Kelley, come on, she’s your wife,” Mason said.
“And she chose to leave. That contract’s not valid anymore because Charles is dead, he can’t get those shares anymore, so it doesn’t matter.”
“That’s bullshit and you know it. You love her,” Mason said.
“It doesn’t matter anymore. She made her choice,” Kelley said.
“One she wouldn’t have made if she knew the truth,” Lee countered.
“What do you guys want? Don’t you have homes to go back to? Marella’s back and she’s going to say yes and Grace is where she belongs … so go home.”
“And where will you go, Kelley?”
“I am home, Lee, stop trying your psychobabble bullshit on me. I’m not an idiot,” Kelley said.
“You’re not, which is why I’m asking,” Lee said.
“Go home, Lee, propose to Marella, spend time with her. I’ll be fine,” Kelley said.
“Why don’t you take some time off,” Mason suggested.
“Soon. I promise.”
“Fine. We’ll leave you to your misery. Jeannie made dinner,” Lee said and stood up.
“Oh and that meeting you had with Marcus … fuck you, Kelley, doing things on your own,” Mason said with a smile.
“You’re welcome,” Kelley said and smiled back.
"I can never repay you, Kelley. You brought my daughter home. Nothing I do can ever make up for that," Mason said as emotion swam in his eyes.
"For six years she was my daughter too. You might be her father on paper, but we all love her, Mason. I'd spill blood for her," Kelley said.
"Thank you, Kelley." Mason wiped his eyes and turned to see Lee looking at him with a look that could only be described as amusement.
"Just hump his leg and get it over with," Lee said and opened the study's door as Kelley laughed loudly.
