Chapter Ninety-Eight

They were all staring at each other. The fact that someone had breached their security was an obvious sore point for Connor. He took pride in his work and when Jesse found out about the leak, there would be hell to pay.
Connor looked almost hurt. “And that means that whoever’s either getting through our security or is a part of our security.”
“Who’s new on the team?” Kelley had crossed his arms over his chest as he leaned back against the desk.
“Sanmil, Juan and Garrett is new on the house rotation but they’ve been with us for a year now, no red flags.”
Lee snapped the briefcase closed and looked at Connor. “Who joined the house rotation when the news broke of Kelley’s wedding?”
“All three of them because I pulled Black from the comms room for personal duty.”
Kelley nodded his head. “Let’s do a deep dig on all three of them, accounts, side hustles, where they go when they rotate on their off days, that sort of thing.”
Lee nodded his head too. “I’ll put Blain on it.”
“There’s nothing we can do until we get more information on that so in the meantime let’s focus on JenCorp. The shares are skyrocketing and like Lee said with those other three buying in its three birds with one stone, especially if Blaire can create the link to Hanson.”
Connor joined them at the sofa and all four of them leaned forward, even though the room was sound proof. “What’s the beef with this Hanson guy?”
“He put Kelley in the hospital when we were seventeen, beat him up with a baseball bat, three on one. It was the same night they took Marella.” Lee’s voice had lowered at the end, his anger once again flaring up.
“One fight seems a bit excessive to go to these extremes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for justice being served but you’re planning on ruining his life.” Connor looked doubtful.
“They’re all part of The Club, the playhouses, they all play together. Charles Alexander, the Chadney’s, the Holt’s, the Blackwell’s and the Goodwin’s. Ernesto’s a part of it too and we’re not sure who else joins them.”
“Jesse should make a detailed list of people he remembers from that time.”
“Blaire has his list. We should concentrate on their acquaintances, business partners and close friends. Any of them could be involved in this shit.”
“Have you heard back from the mayor?” Lee’s question was another sore spot for Kelley.
“No, Jeffrey Holden’s made it quite clear that certain people are big donors to his campaign so it might be time for a new mayor. For all we know he’s playing along with them.”
“Shit, Kelley … you’re doing it again!”
Lee and Connor both looked at Mason. “Doing what again?” Connor asked as he looked around at them.
“Ah, shit, Kelley.” Lee shook his head.
“I had to pull him in. He has a business degree and he majored in political science. It makes sense to push him to run for mayor. It’s not about how we can benefit but how they can’t. This town deserves a mayor that cares about the people, the town and where it’s going.”
“He doesn’t have the political background to gain support.” Mason’s argument was on point, again.
“He’ll have the working class behind him and he’ll gain support from the upper echelons because we will support him. Most people are sheep, Mason, you steer in a direction and most of them will follow. The Elites will push back but in Yorkdare Bay they’re the minority.”
“Who are we talking about?” Connor asked.
“Arlo O’Neill.”
“I heard he married Jane after college and they have twins. He’s got the family image they’ll want. No scandals and we’ve all got history with him.” Lee’s summary was correct, Arlo was their best choice to push for this.
“So, all in favour of Arlo being Yorkdare Bay’s new mayor?”
Mason and Lee nodded their heads and Connor looked at Kelley. “Shit. I knew you were connected and that you guys were active in the shadows, but shit, making someone mayor? Can you really do that?”
Kelley smiled and Mason chuckled before answering. “We’re Nascosto Scelto, we can do anything we want, they just don’t know it yet.”
“This is the inner circle, Connor, you’re officially a part of it. This is what we do. This is what we’ve been doing for the last seven years. Every move, every decision is to break the tyrants. We now own eighty percent of Yorkdare Bay and they haven’t realized it yet. We needed a lawyer so Lee studied law, we needed a money man, so Mason studied finance, we needed someone to read the markets so I studied economics, we needed hackers so we kept Blaire and Blain close. Now we need a mayor.”
“And what am I? The muscle?”
Lee smiled genuinely at Connor. “You’re our strategist.”
“And Jesse?”
“Jesse kicks our asses when we need it but he’s been through enough. He has Marley and he’s happy so I prefer to keep them out of as much of it as I can. Jesse’s not getting hurt by them again. He saved me and now it’s my turn to save him back, to save him from all this.”
“Does he know the extent of what you’re doing?”
Mason chuckled. “No. Only the four of us know the extent of what we’re really doing. Marella knows some, Carey knows some, John knows some but the real truth of what we do is kept inside these walls. They don’t know about the bloodshed, the blackmail or how deep the evil runs.”
“They don’t question the extensive security?”
“They know about The Club but they don’t know what we’re really doing about it. They think that Charles was put out of power when I took over the hotels and now we just run our businesses and security is for in case because Charles is a sore loser.”
