Chapter One Hundred and Sixty
After about twenty minutes, the door opened again and Milana's hospital bed was pushed into the room. The nurse settled her in and Kelley picked Kyzer up after she left the room. Milana stirred and turned her head towards Kelley. Tears sprang into her eyes as she looked at the bundle in his arms and Kelley sat down on the edge of her bed.
She pulled herself into a sitting position, the pain meds still doing their job. Kelley placed Kyzer in her arms and then she cried, fully cried as she held him against her chest. She placed a tender kiss on his forehead and breathed his scent in deeply. It was a moment Kelley knew he was blessed to witness and happiness filled him.
“He’s perfect, Mila.”
“He needs a name,” she whispered.
Kelley shifted and she looked up at him. “I already named him.”
Milana stared at him and then she nodded her head. “I’m not going to fight with you, Kelley. I don’t have the energy.”
“His name’s Kyzer.”
She didn’t say anything to that and Kelley could see the exhaustion on her face. He picked Kyzer up and sat down on her bed again. “Thank you, Mila, for my son.”
It was like something changed for her in that instant and Milana turned on her side, away from him. “I’m tired, Kelley.”
Kelley felt a moment's awkwardness as he looked at her. “The doctor’s discharged Kyzer. I’m taking him home but we’ll come see you tomorrow morning.”
“Okay,” she whispered as her shoulders shook.
“Mila … I’d like for us to talk tomorrow when you’re feeling better.”
She nodded her head. Kelley leaned over her and kissed her cheek. “Good night, Mila.” She didn't respond and Kelley wasn't sure if it was from exhaustion or something else entirely.
Kelley walked out of Milana’s hospital room and halted in his steps. Steel stood a few steps away from the door, scanning the hallway. He straightened up when he saw Kelley and then his eyes went to Kyzer.
“I told you to go home, Steel.”
“I know. I just wanted to make sure she was alright,” Steel said.
Kelley shook his head wondering how this man's sense of loyalty was so strong. “She almost killed you, Steel.”
Steel smiled and looked down as Kelley stopped right in front of him. His hand fitted around Kyzer’s small head and Steel’s smile got bigger. “She couldn’t have known that I was allergic.”
“There’s some sort of welcome basket in the room. Will you bring it?”
Steel nodded and Kelley knew he would feel better after having seen Milana for himself. Kelley walked through the hospital and reached his car. He strapped Kyzer into the baby seat Steel had installed and opened the boot.
Steel arrived five minutes later and loaded everything into the back and took Milana's suitcase. Kelley gave him a smile and a nod before driving off. He knew Steel would either follow him home or spend the night at the hospital. ‘Hospital,’ he thought to himself.
Two hours later, at eight pm, he had Kyzer settled into the new crib, having fed and changed him. He switched the monitor on and closed the door softly. He turned as he heard footsteps on the stairs and realization struck him as Sylvie came into view with a smile on her face.
“I hope you weren’t planning on going out for dinner. I thought we could do movies and popcorn but this time without our clothes on,” Sylvie said as she reached him. He’d completely forgotten the plans he’d made with her the previous night and now his life had changed irrevocably.
“We have to talk.”
“That sounds serious,” she said but kept the smile on her face.
Kelley led her to his study and left the door ajar. He sighed and took a seat on the couch and waited for her to join him. She looked at him with curiosity, slightly parted her lips and licked the bottom one, whether in anticipation or worry, he wasn’t sure.
“I should’ve told you this months ago and I’m not really sure why I didn’t … I’m married,” Kelley said.
“You’re married?” Her cheeks were slightly flushed but other than that her expression remained the same. “Are you going to divorce her?”
“No.”
“So I was a distraction … something to fill your time?” The anger came through now and Kelley remained where he was, his expression stoic.
“We were separated and I thought things would turn out differently, but I won’t divorce her now.”
Sylvie stopped pacing and looked at him, her arms crossed in front of her. “Why not? You said you were in love with me, that what we had was special. You made me believe that I meant something to you.”
“I am in love with you.” Kelley rested his elbows on his knees and leaned forward. “You are special, Sylvie. I never meant to hurt you like this. I didn’t think she’d ever come back to me.”
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
“Even though I’m in love with you … I love her. Mila … she’s different. She changed me and she’s given me the most precious thing I could ever want.”
“You love her,” Sylvie whispered.
“Our son was born this morning and he’s asleep in the room across from my study. She’s my wife, Sylvie, someone I made vows to and I can’t break them. I won’t break them.”
Sylvie’s hands shook and her eyes blazed with fury, it was something Kelley had expected. “You’re a bastard, Kelley. I would’ve never gotten involved with you if you’d told me you were married!”
“It wasn’t like that with you. I care about you and I had fun with you … things are just … everything’s different now and I’m sorry that I hurt you.”
Sylvie grabbed her purse from the couch and Kelley stood up. Her hand connected with his cheek and his head snapped to the side. Kelley didn’t even bother to touch it, he knew it was red. “You’re a cheater and you made me the other woman! I hope she finds out about this and makes your life hell!”
“I’m sorry, Sylvie.”
“Fuck you.”
