Chapter One Hundred and Eighty-Three
It was a week later when Jesse called him. It was a go. Nobody talked about his little meltdown, instead they walked on eggshells around him. Lee and Mason hovered, worked out of his study and at night Milana occupied his mind with sex. It wasn’t a bad deal, except that they all watched him, constantly.
He'd held Milana as she cried for her mother. It was news Kelley couldn't keep to himself. Milana was gutted and he she cursed Ernesto more. Her outburst lessend the guilt because murder was murder. Something inside him had triggered the darkness and he was no longer afraid to embrace it. His guilt went away completely and the fact that he was okay with what he'd done, scared him.
Killing Charles had been different, he'd been in the act of forcing his cock into Marella's mouth. He'd killed Charles to save her but he'd killed Ernesto out of pure rage. It should have bothered him.
Nobody told her that it was Ernesto that he had killed and neither did he. He couldn't tell her how the darkness had taken over or what he planned to do next. He kept quiet and he waited. He tried to be himself, it was hard, but he tried. It didn’t fool his brothers though. They knew something was up and Connor finally broke the ice.
“I can’t really decide who’s the crazier motherfucker, you or Lee.”
Kelley looked up from his laptop and Lee huffed out a laugh. “Kelley. Definitely Kelley.”
“You stabbed your father over thirty times, how am I crazier than you?”
Mason leaned back against the sofa and took turns to look at them. “Did you see that guy’s face? You caved his skull in with your bare hands!”
“Soft in the head just took on a whole new meaning for me,” Kelley said and Connor barked out a laugh.
“The cleanup was a bitch, you’re welcome, Kelley.”
“Thank you, Connor, for doing your job.”
“If I’d known Connor was the cleaning crew, I would’ve called him for other things, you know.” Mason grinned at Connor.
“Oh piss off, Mason, at least I don’t sleep with Kelley’s ex’s,” Connor said drily.
“Technically you are, Connor.”
Kelley shook his head. “Technically, you all are.”
They laughed and Kelley looked at them. His brothers, his family, he’d do anything for them. It felt refreshing to have them laugh instead of warily watching his every move. He prayed that they’d be able to go back to that exact moment, that whatever happened that afternoon didn’t ruin them forever.
“Okay, wait, now I have to ask. Did you ever sleep with Andrea?” Mason looked at Kelley.
“If I had, Grace would’ve been my daughter.” Mason blinked and Kelley grinned. “That means no, Mason.”
“I’m not even going to say anything. You two … him basically humping your leg and you sharing girlfriends, this is really keeping it in the family,” Connor said.
Kelley’s phone pinged and he glanced at the message that showed on his screen. He smiled and looked at the green circle Jesse had texted him. It was time to leave. Kelley got to his feet and pocketed his phone.
“You going somewhere?”
Kelley looked at each of them before he spoke. “I need you all to come with me somewhere and then I need you to trust me. Trust that I’m your brother, that we’re family and that whatever happens next, it's for all of us.”
“That’s not cryptic at all,” Lee said as he stood up.
“We need to go,” Kelley said and snatched his keys off his desk.
They followed Kelley out of the study, down the hall and down the stairs into the foyer. Kelley took a deep breath as he pushed the door open and headed towards his SUV.
“Do you want me to drive?” Connor asked him.
“You don’t know where we’re going,” Kelley said and climbed into the driver’s seat.
Kelley drove through Yorkdare Bay, past the docks and then over the town’s borders. He drove for two miles and then turned right onto a dirt road and after ten minutes a decrepit barn came into view and Kelley parked in front of it.
“Jesse’s here too?” Mason asked.
The large slider door was pushed open partially and Kelley nodded at Jesse. He didn’t look happy and Kelley ducked back into the car and slipped the gun from under his seat into the back of his pants.
“You brought them?” Mason, Lee and Connor stood between them, looking confused.
“They deserve to know the truth, Jesse. I know we said to keep it between us, but just think if it was you on the other side. Wouldn’t you want to know?”
Jesse sighed and looked down as he shifted on his feet. “Fuck sakes. Yeah, I’d want to know.”
“Family, Jesse, we’re family, even Connor that’s looked at my ass more than anyone else.” Connor huffed out a laugh and Lee clenched his fists, not even trying to fake a smile.
“What the fuck is this, Kelley?”
“This is my darkness, Lee, the darkness you firmly believe I don’t have. I can’t not tell you or rather show you. Whatever happens after this, if you want to walk away, I’ll let you. I’m not doing this lightly, there’s a lot at stake here. The point is, I love you guys enough to show it to you, so you can make your own decisions about where I fit into your lives after this,” Kelley said.
“Kelley, you’re scaring me,” Mason said.
“I scare myself sometimes, Mason.”
Jesse shook his head and started walking towards the barn. “Can you ladies get inside now so we can get this show on the road?”
Kelley blinked as they walked inside and Jesse pulled the door shut behind them. A shaft of sunlight shone through the roof somewhere and three people sat tied to the three chairs. They had burlap sacks over their heads and something snapped into place for Kelley.
This was where he was supposed to be. This was always where he’d been meant to end up. Today he’d end the cycle, he’d slay the demons and live happily ever after with his queen. The idea brought a smile to his face but to Lee and Mason it looked dangerous.
