Forty two
OREL POV
Boan reported what happened this morning to me as I clenched my fist in anger. I wished that I was there, I would have made sure that the chief would fear my wife anywhere he saw her and I will still make him fear her, he will just have to be stupid enough to confront her where I am. They are always that stupid.
“And nothing else happened?” I asked in a deadly calm voice that didn’t fool anyone to think that I was actually calm. The thought of Themis tribe doing this to her makes me boil in anger just like the thought of Themis getting married to that man fills me with bloodlust as I want to erase everything about the man from existence.
“Nothing apart from maidens of Lady Themis age group hurling insults at her.”
“And you see that as nothing?” I growled at him but he just smiles, I knew that he should not give him the liberty to act this way to me but it wasn’t like I could punish him for his actions. He is the one guard that Themis hardly complains about when he follows her around, she even sees him as a friend although he remains respectful to her always.
“Yes sire. Lady Themis had them in tears and speechless at the end of their encounter, she said that she was used to behaviors like this.”
“Dismissed.” I said to him as he gave a chin jerk and left quickly, I smiled to myself as my thoughts wandered to my white haired seer. She always put up a strong front to others who tries to harm her, most people will see her and think that she is a blushing bride or a strong will woman but she is neither, she doesn’t have one term in description of her just like I cannot also be classified as mean tempered, quiet or cold warlord. The only term which fits her is mine. She is mine just like I am hers and together we check and balance each other perfectly fine.
“And here I was thinking that the reason you wanted to hide her in the wagon yesterday was because you didn’t want them to hurt her with their words.” Elison said from where he was draped over one of my chairs.
“No, I didn’t want her tribe people to lure her into a sense of safety which they would have done if they had seen her with me. They would have thought that she was my concubine and so had my listening ear and then they would apologize and lie to her. I wanted her to defend herself without my help to these people who practically saw her as defective all her life. I want them to try and hurt her so that she will realize that her tribe is not ever going to be welcoming to her. Her home is with me, my family is hers not these bunch of ungrateful lowlifes who had a rare gem but threw it away because it was something different from what they are used to.” I explained as Elison nodded.
“You know that you didn’t need to give me a speech but that was what you did.” Elison laughs at me, he was still laughing minutes later when my dagger was buried in the wood beam besides him.
****************************************************************************
“What do you mean by I should not kill him.” I asked Themis baffled as I stared at the tied spy that was crying before me. He had wetted himself not so long ago during the whipping he was gave. Apparently, he had snuck into my camp two nights ago on our way here and started to pass himself off as one of my warriors. He was lucky that he was found out by Gwenn after lying that he was in Elison command. Which was stupid because he was clearly a young warrior hoping to prove himself. All my commanders know that the young warriors go to Gwenn command, she knocks them down a couple of pegs by beating the crap out of them. If they learnt something useful during her beating them, then they are being moved to Elison command. He was acting excited to be in the army and under Elison that excitement didn’t match. A few older warriors heard him talk and reported to Gwenn who noticed that she has not trained anyone like him. After the first thirty hits from Gwenn whip, he confessed about him being a fake warrior. After twenty more, he confessed to being a spy. Now he was here in front of me for me to pass an official judgement finishing what Gwenn had started which was to kill him. Themis decided to pay me a visit and tell me not to have him killed.
“I mean that you should have Dyane treat him, give him a horse and supplies and send him on his way.” Themis replies as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Gwenn was nodding her head which meant that she understood Themis logic, I faced her to explain since I could not understand my wife.
“Of course, she meant that we should use him to deliver a message to our enemies but we cannot do that with him intact, since we are offering him a horse, I suggest that we have his legs cut off and also send a few warriors if our own after him so that we will discover where their camp is.” Gwenn said but even before she finish talking, Themis was already shaking her head.
“That is not what I meant, I mean we should let him go. I have a strong feeling that he was going to help save the life of one of the important people in this army.” She stated as I shook his head. “You cannot be serious.”
“I am very serious.” she replied me.
“I cannot free a spy.” I protested out loud.
“You can do whatever you want. You know this.” Themis said and when I didn’t reply her, and just waited with my eyebrows up, she sighed then continue.
“Please, freeing him will be worth it. It will help the war in the long run.”
I looked at my wife as I went through all my options. As much as I would like to ignore her words I knew better. She might not be able to tell me why or when exactly this pathetic excuse of a warrior was going to help us but he was going to help us and that was all that matters, besides I would be a fool to ignore her words. The last time I did, about fifty warriors died, warriors who were under my care, warriors who I would have protect. Maybe if I do ignore her this time more than fifty warriors will died and that is not a chance I am willing to take. I breathed deeply and looked at Gwenn the look in her face was not encouraging, she will not say anything about what my decision is. She will not like it but she will not go against it. “Free him, put him on a horse and give him supplies and set him free.”
Gwenn nodded as she dragged the spy away and left me and my wife. “I hope that you didn’t just make me make the biggest mistake of my life.” I growled at my wife.
“Let what?” she wrinkled her brows in confusion.
I laughed when I realized that she really didn’t know what. “He could be tortured, he would give up where we are and be the reason for the Dar Empire to fall, he has no loyalty to us, he could do whatever he wants and it will lead to our success or failure. You just place the survival of the Dar Empire in the hands of a spy.”
“The future is not certain husband but trust me when I say that there is a very minute chance that what you just said will happen.” Themis replied me trying to hide the worry in her eyes, well, at least she knows that the future is not set in stone. The future she see might change but I wasn’t too worried, if it does change, he vision will change too and then our plans will also change.
