Katrina

"Professor Luka," she calls, her voice low and seductive, making my skin crawl and drawing out his professional title. Making the Professor sound more like purr-fess-or instead of Pro-fess-or and Luka sounding more like Loo-Ka. "I'm done with my test."

My head whips up off my desk, even though I know who's standing in front of his desk already. Kayla is turning in her written mid-term, her hands slightly grazing his when she passes him the paper. "I hope you're able to grade it today. Perhaps we can discuss it after class and resume our previous activities?"

I'm standing before I realize it, my chair clattering to the ground. The noise reverberated off the quiet classroom walls, capturing everyone's attention.

"Ms. Ammerie!" Mistress Crandall yells, "Please take your seat. If you disrupt the midterm again, you'll be dismissed from the class and get an automatic failure on your exam!"

I'm already seething at this point. I can feel the fire itching my skin, begging to be set free. The heat manifesting off my body can be felt around the classroom; it's as if a heater has been turned on full blast. Luka's eyes are on mine, pleading for me to calm down, but I don't know if I'll be able to. How dare Kayla act like that in front of me, knowing I was Luka's fated and we had completed our bond. How dare Mistress Crandall witness this atrocity and act like it was my fault for losing my temper. If she knew anything about a fated mate bond, she'd know how possessive you'd become over what belonged to you.

"Oopsies." Kayla goads, baiting me, "Did Katrina not know about our extra...study sessions." Her pause on the word in the sentence is directly aimed at me; she wants me to assume there's something more going on with their relationship, that it isn't strictly teacher-student. She wants me to lose my temper.

And that's when the fire burns out, its flames instantly smothered. Someone's put Kayla up to this. I just know it. It has to be someone who doesn't want me to pass the academy. Who knows, if I don't graduate from the academy, I can't reign as Queen. And if I can't reign as Queen, then I can't unite the five kingdoms. It has to be someone on the council, maybe Zeus or Poseidon, since Hades and Ares are on my side. I think back, trying to remember what Kingdom Kayla comes from, but for the life of me, I can't remember. I'll have to ask the guys later. They all seem to know their subjects personally.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Crandall." I apologize, my eyes widening as I try to show sincerity, "I'm not sure what came over me. I guess I'm just getting antsy for the physical part of the exam."

I pick up my toppled-over chair and take my seat quietly, turning my attention from my proctor, who seems to have accepted my apology and back on my Professor and his student. Luka's ripped his hand from under Kayla.

"I've already informed you that I will no longer be hosting private tutoring sessions and that I'd assign you to one of the older students in the class to help you for the remainder of the year," Luka replies, laced with anger.

"Does that statement also include Katrina?" She asked, her hands crossed behind her back, twisting side-to-side innocently, her question piquing the proctor's curiosity.

A loud chime fills the room; it's the alarm signaling that the time allotted for the written exam is over. "Everyone, please pass your exams to the end of your row. I will be up momentarily to collect them. For those of you worried about how you did on this portion of your exam, your grade will be posted outside of my classroom by the end of the day and will be available on your student portal within the week when I've had time to enter them. As for your question, Kayla and anyone else who is interested, what I do with my Fated outside of classroom hours is none of your business. From now until the end of the school year, Katrina will be assigned a proctor for this class who'll watch over everything I do to ensure she is not receiving a handout. Which I would NEVER do for any of my students because I want to see you succeed outside of Divine Academy and in the real world. I am teaching you skills that will affect your day-to-day life, skills that will protect you from harm. Katrina's safety is my utmost priority, and I will do everything in my power to make sure she's protected at all times, including providing her with the knowledge to do so herself."
