Katrina

Their souls. I was taking their fucking souls. The moment I'd realized what I'd been doing, what my succubus had been so excited about, I froze, my entire body shutting down from terror over what had almost become. In my mind, I've always seen myself as a killer. I'd murdered my best friends, even if I hadn't known what was happening at the time, and now I'd almost murdered the men who meant the world to me, the people who'd given me the strength to continue when all I could see, all I wanted to see was the ending. They'd changed my ending. They'd turned my period into a semicolon, and I'd thanked them, but almost writing their endings. That very thought destroyed me, and it gave Freyja the opening she needed.

I was so lost in my thoughts, drowning with depression, that I didn't see her strike coming until it happened. Her broadsword pierced the left side of my clavicle, speering completely through. It wasn't the actual stabbing that hurt; not even the removal brought me out of my darkness. It was a sound of intense heartbreak, a sound that could only be made when someone felt like they were losing the love of their life, A scream of intense agony that cried my name, wailing for me and me alone. My brain was fuzzy when I'd come out of the fog, and it'd taken me a moment to realize why the underlying tone of the scream sounded so familar. It had come from Miles. Someone had destroyed him. Someone had hurt him.

I frantically looked around as I tried to spot what had caused him such internal devastation, but there was nothing there. Nothing out of the ordinary. The students were still looking around; Freyja still looked as smug as ever, and yet Miles looked like he'd lost everything in the world. It wasn't until Freyja sent a blast of ancient Norse magic toward me, slamming my body to the ground, that I realized what had happened. I'd been struck by her sword, and the wound was spilling blood. No, spilling would be incorrect. My body was gushing out blood. The warm red irony liquid left my body faster than it could replenish, and still, I didn't feel any pain. All I could feel was a bitter coldness washing through me, starting at the tip of my toes and making its way up through me. As my body began to sway, my vision started fading to black, and I wondered, for the second time, in less than twenty-four hours, if this was it. If this really was the end. Had someone finally written the end? Was the cover of my book being shut for the last time? Would my story never be read again?

I battled with myself internally to do something, to do anything to stop Miles' cries of grief, but no matter how hard I tried to fight, there was nothing I could do. As Freyja raised her sword and angled it, pointing it directly toward my heart, there was absolutely nothing I could do to stop her. I couldn't even find the strength to raise my arm in an attempt to block it, and my magic wasn't coming when I called. I couldn't focus on the way the energy usually pulsed through my veins when I drew upon it, my focus solely on what had happened just a little while ago. It focused on the fact that if I drew on my power now, while weak and bleeding out, I wouldn't be able to stop the nature of my succubus; I wouldn't be able to resist the pull of the souls waiting for me to take them.

So, as Freyja stepped forward to take that final blow, I did the only thing I could think of. I stared death straight in the eyes, letting it know I wasn't afraid. I glared at her defiantly, wanting her to see me, to truly see who I was, as she struck me down. I wanted my face, at this moment, to be the first image that popped up whenever she heard my name. I wanted her to be haunted by this decision. I wanted the world and the stars to know that Katrina was a fighter, even in her final moments. I wanted my men to know I didn't give up; I tried and fought, and even as I looked death in the face, I wasn't afraid. As her sword pierced my flesh, I smiled, ready to embrace death with open arms.

Except, death didn't come. Instead, I felt a bright light breaking open deep inside me, followed by a loud explosion as that light escaped my body and slammed into my enemy.
