Miles

"Is this roster right?" I asked Freyja angrily, shoving the paper I'd torn from the wall into her hands.

After changing into my sparring outfit, I'd swung by the front of the gymnasium to look at the roster for the exam pairings. It'd been hung up at the beginning of the week, and I'd meant to look at it earlier, so I could help Katrina out with her fight technique in preparation for the exam, but it'd slipped my mind. So, you can only imagine the surprise I felt when I saw that my fated had been paired with her Professor. Someone who had more training on the battlefield than even I. Someone who could best me every once in a while. Someone who would easily slaughter my barely trained fiance.

"Yep. Everything's as it should be." Freyja replied, not even bothering to glance at the paper.

"Care to explain why Katrina is paired off with you?" I asked, taking a deep breath, trying to calm myself before I lost my temper with her.

"Miles, I don't care if you're the future ruler of this kingdom. I don't care if we previously had relations. Right now, you are my student, and you will not question my decisions. If you can't handle my choices, feel free to speak to the school board, but know that by the time you've reached them, Katrina will have already completed her midterm." Freyja replied angrily, shutting me down, unwilling to explain her choices. "And you can leave my classroom if you can't control your damned temper. You aren't needed here for this exam." She demanded, pointing to the door.

My nostrils flared at her audacity, but I knew she was right. I was only her future ruler. I had no jurisdiction here. And I'd already sworn to the council that I wouldn't interfere with Katrina's midterms. If I tried to stop Freyja now, the council could see fit to fail Katrina and possibly revoke her attendance at the academy.

"If anything happens to her, aside from the normal bruising from these exams, you'll have the entirety of the Earth Kingdom army to answer to," I growled, storming away, waiting outside the women's locker room for Katrina to emerge.

Hilda, Gretchen, and some other girls walked out first, loudly chatting to themselves, before walking toward the arena, standing just outside it to practice their stretches and start warming up. Their mild chatter did nothing to calm my temper. Hilda annoyed me. She always had. Even when she and Aphelion were a semi-thing, she was always an entitled brat, and I couldn't stand her presence. And She irritated me even more as of late since she'd decided to make Katrina's transition into our world Hell-like. I wanted to yell at them to shut up, but I held my tongue, not wanting to cause a disturbance and risk Freyja kicking me out.

"Finally," I grumbled as Katrina appeared, exiting the locker room and walking alongside Gertrude.

"Oh, Miles." She smiled, acknowledging my presence, seemingly distracted, her face pale with worry, making me wonder if she'd somehow heard the news of who she'd be sparring with.

"Gerdie," I smiled, nodding my head toward the other girl, "How are you feeling?"

"Good...Well, nervous, I guess, since I hate performing in front of the class, but also confident I'll ace this exam." She rambled, "I'm paired with Gretch, and we all know she's practically harmless, like a cat that's been declawed, so I think I've got this in the bag."

"You've deff got this!" Katrina replied encouragingly. "Make sure to smash her to bits." She stated, causing both the girls to chuckle, and what I can only assume must be an inside joke.

"Will do, your highness," Gerdie replied with a salute, clapping her heels as she did so before giving me an exaggerated bow and skipping off to join the rest of the class.
