Katrina
"Alright, well, I'll leave you here then. Good Luck, Kitten." Miles stated, stopping in front of the gymnasium locker rooms, removing his hand from mine and encircling my waist, pulling me into a hug.
"Thanks." I smiled, hugging him tightly, hoping his embrace would calm my test anxiety.
With a quick kiss goodbye, I head toward the locker room, ignoring Hilda and her posse, who were discussing their favorite topic, which just so happened to be me. Or, at least, I tried to ignore them. It was hard to do with how loud they were being. Their voices echoed throughout the locker room, carrying to where I was getting changed.
"Father said that with Katrina's upcoming engagement, he'd discuss my betrothal to Aphelion again with Zeus and Hera. He plans to do so at the engagement party."
"I can't believe she's engaged to the heir of the Earth Kingdom. Why would she give up the other three?"
"You mean four."
"Oh, my stars. I totes forgot it turned out she was fated to Professor Luka."
"Fuckin' lucky slut. He's hot. I'd bond with him too, given the opportunity."
"Gretch, you need to get laid. Come on, a professor, really? And not only a professor but an heir of chaos? There's no need to stoop that low."
"Shove it, Hilda. You're only jealous you couldn't sink your claws into him. Don't think we didn't notice you all over him last year."
"Not because I wanted to make him mine. I needed to get a passing grade in his class, and he's young. What else was a girl to do."
"Wait...you passed that class."
"Don't listen to them," Gertrude whispered in my ear, startling me and causing me to jump and bump my head into my open locker door.
"Ouch," I yelled, grabbing the top of my head.
"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. I just wanted to tell you not to listen to them. They're obnoxious, and they saw you walk in. They know you're listening to them. Only a grain of what they say is true. I wouldn't take anything to heart." She smiled down at me, her brown eyes full of sincerity.
"Don't worry, Gerdie. I know Helga's full of it; her minions are all bark and no bite. I'm not letting them get to me." I replied, grabbing the sports bra I'd dropped and slipping it over my head as we talked.
"Say that to your melted locker door." She chuckled, slipping on her class uniform.
I glanced up at my locker and noticed the smelting metal above me. Oops. Looks like I had lost my temper at their gossiping.
"Helga's just lucky you aren't going against her today," Gertrude replied, uncaring about my accidental vandalism, "I don't even want to think about how she'd react to you burning her hair off."
Her comment caused me to roll my eyes as my brain pictured a hysterical Helga running out of the gymnasium crying, calling up her father and screaming to him on the phone, telling him that I needed to be expelled immediately or at least thrown in prison for my sheer audacity.
"Ah, that's better. Not so angry now." Gerdie laughed, "Although, on second thought, maybe you should keep some of that anger. According to the rooster, you're going up against the Professor."
"Wait. What?" Is that even allowed?"
"Not sure. It's never happened before. But we should probably get out there if we don't want to get marked as a no-show. I don't want to repeat this class next year, and if you fail the midterm, there's no making up your grade."
As I hastily followed Gertrude out of the class, I wondered why Freyja would pair me with her. Was she working for the council? Had they put her up to this? Or was it Thor? Did he want to take out his daughter's competition? A dead fated couldn't be Queen, and if I was dead, my bond with Aphelion would be broken, leaving room for Hilda to step in. And how better to take me out than a former Valkyrie warrior? Someone who'd been under the command of his younger brother, Tyr. Someone who'd be willing to follow his orders because it'd been ingrained in her since she was young.
The more I thought about the facts presented, the more I realized that if this pairing for my midterm was a coup attempt against me, it was commanded not by the council but Thor. And that thought scared me even more. Thor was unpredictable. I knew nothing about him except that he carried the same power as Zeus and could've claimed the throne as the rightful king of the Sky Kingdom, but he'd relinquished his claim on the title to the more powerful God.
Either way, Zeus, the council, or someone else entirely, it was too late to think about now. It's not like I could do anything to change my pairing for the exam. The only thing I could focus on now was the upcoming fight and how I'd win the fight against my Professor or, at least, how I would achieve a passing grade for the exam.
