Chapter 28

**LENATO'S POV**

My boots clicked the hard floor as I hurried down the stairs. The sound began to annoy me, maybe because it aligned with the rapid thumping of my heart

“I shouldn't have worn these shoes.” I muttered to myself.

I arrived at the door that led into the dungeon and I paused to take a deep breath.

I grabbed a torch and with shaky hands, opened the door.

Entering in through the door,I was hit with cold and musty air. It was an irritating scent to my sensitive nose and I couldn't help but wonder how Luciana coped with the number of times she was sent here, but then again I remembered that she had no wolf.

“That vermin!” I spat. Everytime I thought of her,I suddenly got angry. She was a disgrace to our pack and more to our family. She was no family of mine.

My thoughts wandered off to Helen and I couldn't control the frantic beating of my heart. It felt painful in a way.

I began to imagine all the horrible things that would have been done to her already. Werewolves were not known for their patience after all,and she was a soft, gentle girl who had good morals.

“How the heck did she see them?”

I picked up her scent and instantly knew that she was close by. I continued walking in the muddy dungeon,my heart still beating fast as I prayed she was okay.

She was placed in one of the better cells, the ones made for royalties who were only suspected of crimes. Her hair was roughened and her eyebrows knit in a frown as I stared at her sleeping face. She must have been treated really badly to be frowning in her sleep.

“Just how much did they scare you?” I clenched my fists as my face settled into a frown. “Those bastards, how could they do this to a girl!”

I flinched at my own words,my sister, no,Luciana was also a girl but she had experienced far worse. I would never accept her as my sister, and she was a wolf, the situation was completely different.

I stood and stared at her, doing my best not to disrupt her not so peaceful sleep. How long I stood,I had no idea.

She stirred and groaned softly before opening her eyes. Her long lashes were raised, and it was obvious to tell that she had cried before she slept.

I clenched my fists harder.

“Lenato, is that you?” She asked, her voice soft and gentle.

“Yes, it's me. It's Lenato.”

“Those people…those people..that person…” The words seemed to be stuck in her throat.

I moved closer to her cell and stretched my hands towards her,she held out her hands and I cradled them in comfort.

“Are you okay?” I inquired, my voice soft. Again,I was surprised.

She shook her head violently, quite different from the reply I'd expected.

“I'm not okay, humans suddenly turned into wolves, how can I be okay? How does that sound reasonable? I still don't even believe it,but my eyes saw it. I saw! My eyes cannot lie to me.” She trembled as she spoke.

I was speechless and had nothing to say. This was why humans were not allowed to know. There was a war between the humans and other races because in the days of old,the humans were inferior and prey to the vampire's blood thirst. They were considered unimportant and useless until a human decided to change that. He began several researches all in the bid to get rid of the other races, especially the vampires. He finally found a way to get rid of the Vampires, and along with several people succeeded in Killing a total of seven hundred vampires in twelve days.

They decided to fight back and the vampires killed a populace of three thousand humans in three days. Thus, the interracial war began.

In the end the memory of every human was wiped out and the ones who mind control didn't work on died out,and the knowledge of the existence of any other race was erased from the memory of all Humans. Unfortunately ,there were still some groups of humans who continued sharing the Legacy in their family. This was the family of the man who had invented the vampire virus. Those people were the humans that made up the Racial Council.

“Are you also one of them?" she asked slowly, pulling her hands out of mine, she faced me and the light shone on her face showing dried tears.

I tried hard to figure out what to say,how to . The best thing to do was to lie to her but I found it hard to do that. My lips wouldn't move to accommodate my lies. It was like every part of me screamed to tell the truth.
I nodded grimly. It was the first time I felt ashamed of being a wolf.

She sighed and leaned back dejectedly.

“What will happen to me now? Will I be killed or will I be fed to the wolves?” She laughed at her joke. “Dark humor..” she said dryly, her voice devoid of any emotions.

“I….” I was too scared to tell her what her fate would be. I couldn't bring myself to speak and she knew it.

“I'm guessing I would need to wait for the leaders or whatnot to come before I know my fate?”

I nodded slowly. “ I can only hope that they will look upon you with favor.”

She sighed and looked up at me after a while.

“I know that this isn't the appropriate time to be asking for this, considering the seriousness of the situation we are in,but can you lend me your phone.”

“I am not permitted to give you any phone,..you need to stay so.. you wont be considered a traitor.or anything like that.

“I'm not gonna try to reach anyone,I just need to find a way to calm down.I need to relieve my stress. I'm only going to watch a movie on your phone.”

I brought out my phone and gave it to her but when she tried connecting it, it didn't work.

She hit her forehead. “Of course, there's no internet under the ground.”

I chuckled softly.

“Will you let me know what will be done to me so I can mentally prepare myself?” She asked, her voice sombreros.

I shut my eyes for a second and took a deep breath.

“Your memories will be wiped away.”
