Her fingers were trembling, and she shot a nervous glance at the door and sent a response.
Z: Who is this?
She waited for several long minutes for whoever it was to respond and when the response came from the anonymous number, Zorah was even more confused.
A: You have what I want. I want what you have. Let’s switch.
A lump the size of a golf ball blocked her throat and drawing her bottom lip between her teeth she replied.
Z: What do you mean
A: You aren’t stupid Zorah. You want to escape the Lucchesi Family. I want into the Lucchesi Family. I can make both our dreams come true.
Z: Were you the woman outside the gate?
A: No but I saw her there. Sveva Gallo. She’s one of your husband’s lovers.
Z: Who is she?
A: Sveva Gallo is insane. I suggest you follow Icaro’s suggestions until he catches her and puts a bullet in her head, or you’ll be dead before I can get you out of Italy. She once shimmied a drainpipe of a hotel to try to get into his room in Rome. Nuttier than a squirrel’s den in autumn.
The thought made Zorah sick.
Z: Why do you want into the Lucchesi family?
A: Who wouldn’t? Other than you, of course. Money. Fame. Power. Only a foolish American girl would think herself too good for a Lucchesi.
Z: You want to be married to Icaro?”
A: I’ve tasted him once. It wasn’t enough. I want it all. I can help you leave.
Z: How?
A: You and I have a mutual friend. He will get you passage from Italy back to the USA. I simply need to get you to agree.
Z: Who is this friend?
A: I cannot share all my secrets Zorah. I don’t trust you any more than you would trust me.
Z: You slept with Icaro before?
A: Once. We met in America. I spent many evenings biding my time, waiting for my turn and when it finally happened it was worth the wait. You should know.
Zorah considered she absolutely did not know. While he’d touched her with his fingers and his mouth, he hadn’t even done this much over the last several days since the night he’d killed the nurse. The thought sobered her.
Z: If he finds out you are doing this, he’ll kill you.
A: You won’t tell him because you don’t want my blood on your hands. You’re a nice lady, Zorah.
Z: How were you able to get the photo of me?
A: A very good lens. Don’t worry. I’m not so close to get caught.
Z: Are you also American?
A: No.
Z: What is your plan?
A: For now, we wait. Icaro is coming back to you now. Delete this thread. I’ll find a way to contact you again. I’ll make arrangements with our friend to get you away from this madness.
Z: He won’t accept you.
A: He will if he thinks you’re dead. I will console him, comfort him, help him take out the enemies we will blame your death on and then he will turn to me. Once we are together a second time, he’ll know the Lucchesi blessing is the bullshit we all know it to be. Now quickly, delete this and get your frown off. It’s very much giving away your every thought.
Zorah looked to the sliding glass doors suddenly aware whoever it was talking to her could see her sitting on the bed. No sooner did she delete the thread from her phone did Icaro step into the room. She wanted to leap from the bed and close the curtains against the glass but remained where she was staring at the phone in her hand.
“What are you doing?” Icaro questioned her quietly.
“I was going to message Sidonia. I wanted to talk but then I assumed maybe she was with Vodingo, and I didn’t want to disturb her. Did you find out who it was who was out there pretending she was going to shoot me?”
“Yes.” He moved to unlock the sliding doors. “It was the woman I told you about before who likes to make trouble for me here. It is safe to go outside again. Her father picked her up before I could get her. She won’t be back.”
The tone to his voice made her shiver. “You’re going to kill her.”
“She threatened my wife.”
“Did it not occur to you she’s doing such things because of you?”
“No.” He shot her an annoyed look. “She’s doing such things because she’s insane and despite multiple warnings to her father to get her the professional help she needs, she continues to show up. I believe The Walrus tipped her off to my whereabouts.” His muttered “prick” wasn’t missed by Zorah’s ears.
Zorah suddenly wondered if her potential accomplice in her escape might be encouraged by the Walrus. Was he the mutual friend they were discussing? She realized it was highly probable.
“You can’t kill her, Icaro.” Zorah turned her thoughts back to the woman. “You said she is crazy, then insist she gets help.”
“Her own family want to be absolved of her foolishness and I’m tired of her antics. She stood at the end of our garden and threatened you.” His phone rang and he grunted, “speaking of the Walrus.” He answered it on speaker, “you are a prick.”
“What did I do?”
“You sent her here.”
“I merely let her know you returning back to Catania. Is it my fault you show up into the city in a parade of cars and a small army of thugs?”
“She threatened Zorah,” Icaro said bluntly. “Your games and antics put my wife in the fool’s path.”
The Walrus’s voice was low, “how did she threaten her?”
“Play acted shooting her from the edge of my garden. You did this. You told her I got married and you told her where we were, and it put the bitch back in my life when I haven’t seen hide nor hair of her in over two years.”
“Zorah, she is safe?” The Walrus sounded concerned.
“She is fine. I have an army out to find Sveva to return her to her father since my wife has begged me not to end the bitch.”
“I will take responsibility this time, Icaro. I didn’t think she would threaten –”
“Save it.” Icaro cut him off his eyes focused on Zorah who stared back at him. “I’m doing my wife a favor by not killing Sveva. Leave her alive but if she shows up in my wife’s face again, I will personally hold you responsible for any heartache my wife feels when I have to put the bitch down like the rabid dog she is.”
“Noted. Please offer my apologies to Zorah.”
“Fuck you,” Icaro hung up on The Walrus and then turned back to the door. “I will let her live because you asked but for no other reason.”
“Where are you going?”.
“To give hell to the security team who failed to keep her off our property. Get some rest. I’ll be back later.”
