Beach at Dusk
Zorah was sitting on the beach at the villa later in the evening after a full day out on the water with Sidonia, Vodingo and Icaro. It was the best day she’d spent in a long time, despite the knowing look she’d gotten from Icaro when lunch was finished, and he came to check on her. He’d warned her from where he was sitting, he could see the glow of her skin. He’d brought additional sunscreen for her, a big floppy hat, gave her a gentle kiss and disappeared back where he and Vodingo were doing some work from the ship.
“What are you doing out here all alone?” a quiet voice spoke from behind her.
Zorah turned her head to look at her husband standing behind her.
“Hi,” she gave him a big smile. “I knew you were on the phone, so I thought I’d come have a seat outside and enjoy the evening a bit longer.”
“You like the water.” He observed as he moved to sit with her. Folding into the sand, he pulled his knees up to his chest and wrapped his arms around them as he nestled beside her.
“I do like the water,” she took the initiative and rested her head on his shoulder and felt his lips touching her crown. A smile pulled her lips at his tender touch. “I feel peaceful today.”
“Do you?”
“I do.”
“Do you feel you’ve mended your fences with Sidonia?”
“I really do. I forgot how mischievous and naughty she could be.”
“I didn’t realize she was so naughty. What were the pair of you doing watching such videos?”
She rubbed her forehead against his shoulder nervously, “I asked her about something we were doing because it was something I’d never heard of before. She never heard of it either. She then got it in her head maybe our education was lacking and wanted to find an instructional video. She did not find what she was looking for.” She gave a snort.
“What did you think of what you watched?” Icaro’s curiosity carried into the quiet dusk.
“I found it silly and absurd. The first video she brought up was a man who was so big he looked like an elephant. It was so weird. Sidonia and I were convinced he got some kind of surgery to make it bigger.”
Icaro’s laugh bounced over the water. “Surely it wasn’t so big.”
“As long as your forearm,” she pulled away from him and lifted his arm. “And as thick!”
He held his arm up and made a face, “maybe there was surgery. It doesn’t seem natural.”
“I’ve already had many fears over the size of you going anywhere near me. I mean I still want it and all but it’s scary. The size of that thing was awful. I hope the girl in the video was paid a lot of money for the damage she likely incurred.”
Her words sent Icaro into gales of laughter. He fell onto his back, holding his ribs, the sounds he was making contagious and soon Zorah was laughing along with him. Wiping tears from his eyes he hiccupped. “Oh, my love, you are something else.” He yanked her down to lay across his chest, his fingers trailing through her hair and his smile wide.
“I’m glad you think so.” She rested her chin on his chest staring into his blue eyes. “Your eyes are beautiful.”
“Thank you,” he gave her a toothy smile. “Aside from dirty videos, what else did you and Sidonia talk about?”
“So many things. She asked me if I was really going to make you wait thirty days. I said I’d give us both a reprieve in nine more days.” She kissed his chin, “I’m looking forward to finishing our wedding night.”
“I am too. Are we going to go inside and watch our movie? Chef made you the caramel popcorn you requested this morning.”
“Gladiator?”
“Yes.”
“It’s another revenge movie?”
“Uh-huh,” he smirked at her. “I’ll watch it for the violence, you can watch it for the half naked men.”
“There’s half naked men?” she made wide eyes playfully at him. “Will there be fully naked men?”
He tapped her backside with a smirk, “possibly, vixen.”
“A vixen? I’m a vixen? What a new name for me.”
“It certainly is but it’s fitting. You’re a temptress to me, Zorah. However, I want you to know something.”
“What?”
“I like you.”
She giggled at his words, “you like me?”
“I like you, Zorah. I genuinely like. As much as I love you because you are my one, I like you for who you are. You have such a fun sense of humor. I enjoy spending time with you Zorah. Even though you technically spent time with Sidonia today, I loved being with my friends while you were nearby. It felt good to do couple things with you.”
“I like you too,” she patted his chest. “You and Vodingo enjoyed yourselves?”
“Oh, we spent hours discussing all the ways we’re going to fuck with your uncle and Sidonia’s parents. He’s incredibly angry with them.”
She gave a laugh, “Sid told me I’m not allowed to call him my uncle anymore.”
He pointed at her, “good call. She is right.”
“What kind of plans did you come up with? You know you can’t kill him right, Mr. Assassin?”
He chuckled at her question, “yes, amoré, I am aware I can’t drag him to a warehouse and torture him for years and then finally end his pathetic existence.”
She wrinkled her nose, “that was very detailed.”
“I might have fantasized a bit about it,” he admitted. “However, we settled for killing two birds with one stone. The family he hired to find you are a rival to ours. They’re a small family back in New York. They don’t even have a thousand men pledged to them. By this time next month, they won’t even have one left. They will all pay the price for going against us. Your uncle, however, will be caught with drugs.”
“Drugs?”
“Yes. Cocaine to be precise. Your uncle has paid out a lot of money to the head of the rival family. We’re making it look like it was for drugs.”
Zorah sat up and straddled Icaro. “You won’t kill him though?”
“Nope. Simply doing some prison time and his entire life ruined and exposed. His pride is going to be his downfall.”
Zorah was about to comment when she felt a sting in her right shoulder. Looking down her vision blurred and then she noted the dart in her shoulder.
“Zorah!”
As Icaro moved to sit up, Zorah noted a similar dart strike him in the shoulder. As he turned his head to look behind him, Zorah’s vision completely blackened, the word “why” a faint whisper.
