Calling Sidonia
Zorah picked up her phone while sitting in the back garden while Keturah was doing laps in the pool. From her vantage point, she could see Orlando watching Keturah from his office. She was certain the man had it worse than Icaro did for Zorah.
She giggled with the notion and then dialed out the number to Sidonia.
“Hello?”
“Hi Sidonia. It’s me.”
“Zorah!” Sidonia screamed so loud Zorah was forced to pull the phone from her ear and rubbed her ear painfully. “Oh, my goodness. Are you okay? Where are you? What is happening? Your dad is alive?”
“Sidonia,” she snickered at her friend’s hysterics. “Breathe!”
“I’ve been so worried about you,” Sidonia started crying.
“I’m fine. I really am. It’s been a crazy few days, but I promise I’m doing okay.”
“What is going on?”
Zorah gave a quick recap of the last three days and explained how Orlando and his team realized Ippocrate’s hired guns were going to kill Icaro and kidnap Zorah because they’d found a way through the security. Sidonia hung on every word and was quiet as she contemplated all the information.
“Still with me, Sid?” Zorah questioned softly.
“I am. I’m torn between being thrilled for you for having a dad now but terrified for you to know what this means for your future. They’re holding you hostage, Zorah.”
“They’re keeping me safe, Sidonia.”
“Because they think Vodingo messed up?”
“No. Last night at dinner after I’d talked to Icaro, they told me the blame is on Dagoberto.”
“What? Why?”
“He is the head of his family. He is supposed to be on top of everything and while some things are delegated to Icaro as the second in command, Dagoberto is the one who everyone is supposed to report to. They feel he should have noted the hole in my security and cracked down on Icaro and Vodingo for being slack.”
“Zorah, they didn’t even notice down the street from us were six men living in a villa who were planning to kidnap you. How did they miss it? I’m so angry, Zorah.”
“Sidonia, I understand you’re angry but really, it’s not for you to worry about. My family was there to get me away before things went bad.”
“Why didn’t they bring me with you?”
The question stunned Zorah. “What do you mean?”
“Your dad and this Orlando guy must have known I would want to be with you. I hate being away from you.”
“Sidonia,” she sighed sadly. “I think they needed to make a decision based on the situation and weighed their options and it made the most sense to take me alone.”
“But I hate it here without you.”
The comment made Zorah’s eyes widen. “What? Why? I thought you were in love with Vodingo!”
“I’ve only known him a few weeks. I’ve known you my entire life. I married him to be with you, Zorah, and you’re not here. I mean, he’s hot and the sex is great, and he loves to spoil me and to make me feel special but we’re still getting our bearings and half the time I want to punch him in the balls.” Sidonia sniffed angrily. “I know in time I’m going to love him deeply and truly, but I don’t yet and the fact he he’s so stupidly ignorant about my feelings and understanding my boundaries is hard.”
“You’re still fighting with him?”
“I was crying the night you were taken. Do you know what the dumb idiot said to me?”
“I’m afraid to ask.”
“I said, what if she’s dead? He said, well you’ll still have me Sidonia.” She snorted furiously. “As if his brutish form is the only thing I will ever need in my life. The man doesn’t know how to offer comfort. He’s not good with emotions and when emotions are heightened, he turns into this weird dude I want to smack.”
Zorah giggled, “really?”
“I guess Icaro was in tears the other night. Vodingo overheard Dagoberto and Calogero talking about how Icaro was falling apart and was in tears. Do you know what Vodingo said? He said, maybe when Zorah is home she can give him his balls back. Dagoberto punched him in the gut and told him before he started shooting his mouth off, he should walk a mile in Icaro’s shoes and threatened to take me away and hide me from Vodingo until you were home so he could understand Icaro’s suffering.”
“Icaro was crying?” Zorah whispered her fingers touching her lips sadly.
“He was a wreck, Zorah. Until you called, he was a wreck. The minute you and your father called him, he was a man on a mission, purposeful and single-minded. He is out for blood. I saw him when he was on his way to interrogate Sveva Gallo and her father and I have to say, if he was looking at me in such a way, I would have peed my pants and then shot myself simply to make sure he didn’t get his hands on me.”
“I’ll be back with him soon.”
“How do you know?” Sidonia questioned.
“Because once he deals with the situation in New York, he’s going to Providence and once the Father Giannone is managed, Dad is bringing me to Icaro.”
“Dad?” Sidonia giggled. “You’re already calling him Dad?”
“He feels like my Dad, Sidonia. It really does feel like he’s my dad and we’ve been part of each other’s lives forever. We watched a movie together last night and Dane pointed out we have a lot of same mannerisms.”
“Like what?”
“Like eating popcorn one piece at a time. Orlando and Dane shove it into their mouths like animals.”
“Like me!”
Zorah giggled, “we also both like the same soda, our burgers plain and both of us hate cotton candy.”
“Where were you that you learned that you both hate cotton candy?”
Zorah bit her lip and sighed, “I can’t tell you yet. We can’t tell Icaro where I am because we need him to be focused on what he’s doing. The minute I get the go-ahead to let him know where I am, I’ll let you know too.”
“Promise?”
“Yes. You can call and text me anytime at this number. It’s a satellite phone with an international number but you can reach me.”
“Okay.”
“Do you want to complain more about Vodingo?” Zorah asked with a grin.
“Do I ever!” Sidonia squealed and began going off about how her husband drops his underwear next to the clothes bin and not in it and it makes her crazy.
Curling into the seat, basking in the sunshine, Zorah listened attentively to her friend and realized it didn’t matter the distance between them, she and Sidonia were always going to be close. Not even an ocean between them would change this.
