Breach On The Beach

Icaro slowly opened his eyes to find Vodingo standing over him, Amauri and Misaele pacing behind him and Uranio typing furiously on a computer at Icaro’s desk. The men all swam in and out of his vision.

“What happened?”

“Security breach,” Vodingo said quietly. “A small team I’m guessing were mercs took out half of our security team. Three men are dead, four are still unconscious. They came in from the water and the street. Twenty men. We got one of them in the shoulder,” he waved at Amauri, “but the team took him back with them. We have nothing.”

“Where is my wife?” Icaro’s head was pounding.

“Gone,” Vodingo said quietly. “They took her.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know. We’re working on it. They were efficient, Icaro. I’ve not seen a team like this in a long time. We’re good but we’re good when we’re prepared. We are on our home turf. Nobody tends to come at us here. We had eighteen men on the perimeter to keep the pair of you safe. I was with Sidonia at our place when shit hit the fan. I put her in the safe room.”

“Who took her?” The more he tried to focus, the less fuzzy he was feeling, and the rage was building. “Someone is going to fucking die if I don’t know where my wife is and now!” his voice was raw as his bellowing made two of the men walking into the room turn and walk back out in terror.

Vodingo squeezed his shoulders, “Icaro. You need to calm down. We will find her. You were tranquilized not shot so whoever it was, isn’t an enemy of our family or you’d have been dead.”

“They might not have been an enemy before tonight, but they are now.” Icaro wanted to get on his feet, but his legs were shaking almost as much as his hands were. His Zorah was gone. She must be terrified wherever she was, and it made his chest ache painfully. They were finally making gains in their relationship and now someone took her from him. They were going to pay.

“We have a few leads, Icaro.” Vodingo tried again to calm him. “The Walrus was in the area.”

Icaro’s eyes snapped to his, “you ruled him out as a threat.”

“I did however he’s back on the list. There was no link between him and the woman we grabbed off the yacht, who was connected to the family back in New York. He is also not affiliated with the family in any way. He has always until recently, while not a member of Lucchesi, been allied with our family. It makes no sense when his businesses are so closely tied to those of your father’s, for him to be coming at you now. However, when we did our sweep, we found out he was having dinner at a restaurant not a five-minute walk from here. He’s been picked up. Your father is going to oversee his interrogation.”

“My father?”

“Yes. Both of our father’s as well as Uncle Errico and Uncle Melchiore are on their way. The farms are on lockdown. Our mothers are safe as are all the Lucchesi brides and children.”

“Except mine.”

“I believe she is safe,” Vodingo reassured him. “She might not be in our hands but whoever took her used a tranquilizer on her and you. It could be a kidnapping since you were seen out with her multiple times, and they know you have money.”

“This organized? They immobilized a team of eighteen and me, Vod. They were stealthy. I didn’t see a damn thing.”

“You were focused on Zorah. When I played back the footage from the beach, you were staring at her. A bomb could have gone off next to you and you wouldn’t have noticed until it was too late.”

“I am in my home!” he yelled again. “There should be no place safer. So tell me why,” he grabbed Vodingo’s collar, “why when I have a team of eighteen men on the perimeter, forty to fifty men around at any given time, a group of twenty fucking men managed to get past my security cameras, my alarms, the two dogs on the beach and you, after we beefed everything up when Sveva Gallo showed up.”

“Icaro, I’m sorry. I will take responsibility, but we will find her.”

Icaro shoved Vodingo furiously as he managed to finally get to his feet. “How long was I out?”

“Ninety minutes. We don’t know what they shot you up with, so we weren’t sure what to use for a reversal agent. We only got your blood work back fifteen minutes ago and administered the dosage within minutes.”

“What was it?”

“A ketamine mix,” Vodingo swallowed.

“Someone put ketamine in my wife?” He closed his eyes as fear overwhelmed him and he gripped the edge of his desk to keep his knees from buckling from nothing but pure terror. “Zorah where are you?” he whispered into the darkness behind his eyelids.

“Icaro,” Vodingo’s voice was soft behind him as if worried to set him off. “You need to remain positive. If they wanted her dead, she would be dead. They would have killed both of you. They didn’t shoot to kill, Icaro. Keep this in mind. They wanted her alive.”

“For what?” he turned on his friend. “For what? To ransom? To assault? To traffic?” The last question caused Vodingo’s eyes to widen as if he hadn’t considered it. “We shut down one of our enemies in Eastern Europe with their trafficking rings. Is it retaliation? What if none of this is related at all to someone wanting Zorah for themselves and rather want to get back at the Lucchesi family for interfering with their business.”

“They were shut down for trying to put their girls in our clubs,” Vodingo grunted.

“I am aware, Vodingo but we will not overlook any possibility,” he looked at Uranio, “what are you reviewing?”

“I’m running a facial recognition program which Doris sent over. I’m comparing it to all the street cameras, the local airports, train stations, bus stations and border crossings.”

Icaro noted the way Uranio was holding his head. “What is wrong with your head?”

“I took a hit to the back of the head when I was trying to get to you,” he said with a sigh. “I heard shouting and came outside from the garden gate and took one step and someone got me from behind.”

Icaro stared at him, “did you get it checked?”

“I’m fine. She is my charge Icaro. I am responsible for her. Me and Amauri were assigned to her and Misaele too,” Uranio lifted his chin. “We fucked up thinking because she was with you, she was safe. We won’t make the mistake again. Once she get’s home we’re overhauling her security.”

Icaro nodded, his stomach tightening. “When she gets home.”

“When she gets home,” Uranio nodded decisively.
