Meeting The Walrus

“Icaro, good to see you.”
The man Icaro called the Walrus was the largest man Zorah ever met. If she were guessing his height, he was seven feet tall and he was easily three hundred pounds, but he didn’t appear to be fat. He was thick and muscular, and she wondered if his neck was wider than her thigh.
“Holy cow you are a big man.” She stared at him.
“Thank you.” He gave her a once over, “your husband describing you didn’t begin to give you the credit you deserve.”
“Because you always try to steal what is mine. What’s with the hookers and the women who know me?” Icaro didn’t pull any punches.
The Walrus smirked at Icaro. “Do you think I have a detailed list of all your lovers, Icaro? There are so many how was I to know which were which.” He extended his hand to Zorah, “Zorah Lucchesi, my name is Caiu Giarre. You may call me Walrus. Blink if you need help escaping the Lucchesi family.” He put a wide smile on his face as Zorah giggled at his silliness.
“You are not funny. Why are you trying to sabotage Zorah’s night on the town? This is her first time in a club, and you are ruining it, you oversized animal.”
“Zorah, you seemed to be having an enjoyable time. Is your night ruined?”
“I don’t like all the women coming up to touch my husband.”
“Which is fair. Sadly, if I needed to kick out all the women he’s been with from the club, the place would be nearly empty aside from his relatives.” He gave her a sad smile, “surely a woman as gorgeous as you, would be better off to find a man with less miles on his,” he paused as if to censor his word, “body.”
“Are you seriously making a play for my wife, Walrus?”
Caiu grinned at Icaro. “Why not? She is the most beautiful woman in the club. I bet the minute you saw her in this dress you contemplated keeping her home.”
“No. Not for a second. I wanted everyone to see she was out with me.”
“Yet you let her dance with other men?”
“I didn’t let her do anything,” Icaro shot back quickly. “She is her own person and if she wants to dance with every man in the club, it is her prerogative to do so. She does not need permission.”
“Is this so?”
“Yes.”
“Zorah, will you dance with me?”
Zorah stepped back towards Icaro. The glint in this man’s eyes was more predatory than the one Icaro could come up with and she wasn’t sure if she trusted the man.
“Actually, Mr. Giarre, I’ll have to decline. After dancing with multiple other people, I realized the only person I really enjoyed dancing with was my husband. He helps me move better.” She met Icaro’s eyes with a smile and he tugged her to his side and kissed her forehead.
“Ah, my loss then. If at any time, you realize you deserve more than a man who uses myths and legends to seduce you, let me know.” He winked at her playfully.
“You’re going to find yourself on the receiving end of a one-way trip to my family’s vineyard to be made into fertilizer.” Icaro warned.
“Oh stop,” the Walrus laughed in Icaro’s face. “I specifically asked one of the girls from the last party you attended, to bring some girls in to fuck with you. I never meant to upset your wife, more to remind you how you didn’t do her justice.”
“I’m aware I didn’t do her justice. Why do you care?”
“All of my life, Icaro, you get the best of everything, and you waste it. I met your father at the hotel earlier this evening very briefly to give him a quick update on a matter and my eyes were drawn towards the most exquisite view. Your lovely bride with her eyes closed as if in deep prayer. Then you stepped onto the balcony and ruined the scenery. Your father was with me and said you’d almost squandered your gift, and you were trying to make amends. I might not be part of your blessed bloodline, but I am a firm believer in love at first sight.” His eyes were fixed on Zorah now.
“You would throw decades of a friendship away to try to steal my wife?”
“I’m not going to steal your wife, Icaro. She is your one after all.” He gave a sad sigh. “Not all the world gets such blessings. Try not to fuck it up Icaro because I can tell you right now, it won’t be the little worms who asked your wife to dance tonight who will show her what is up.”
“We are friends!” Icaro threw his hands up in exasperation.
“All is fair in love and war.”
“My father put you up to this.”
“Actually, he told me to fuck off because he saw the look on my face, I imagine. Told me not to make things worse for you than they already are.”
“This is because I bought the building you wanted.”
“No. The reason I met your father was to secure another building. I was giving him a check.” He gave Zorah an easy smile, “as I said, Icaro, I was struck immediately by your wife’s beauty. I’m simply letting her know there are options out there. She is far too lovely to be saddled with a man who only last Tuesday let one of his cousin’s hookers blow him.”
Zorah turned to Icaro, “what is talking about? There were more after your stupid bachelor party?”
“You didn’t tell her?”
“Why?” Icaro glared at the man.
“Zorah, I run nightclubs all over the world, some with Lucchesi and some without. Icaro’s cousin was messing up the books and he did an audit if you will on Tuesday last week to see how bad it was. Turns out, his cousin was running his strip club like a brothel. Dagoberto asked me to transform it from borderline bordello to something more fitting of the Lucchesi brand. I interviewed the staff and found out one of the girls blew Icaro on Tuesday in the hopes she would get a marriage proposal and almost ended up dead. She made me the same offer after telling me the only reason she was still alive was because she gave up the names of the two girls who were manipulating the club manager.”
Zorah was steaming, “you didn’t tell me.”
“Zorah, it was before our date. You told me during our date not to touch anyone else and I didn’t. I swear.” He looked at the man he’d considered a friend for years. “You’re going to end up with a bullet.”
“No, I won’t. If this,” he waved between the couple, “is meant to be, then shouldn’t you be honest? You should have told her. This is on you, not me, Icaro. I simply am throwing my hat in the ring. Why should you get all the riches in the world with minimum effort.”
