Uncovering Plots
Icaro looked at the email his father forwarded to him earlier and then grimaced.
“Fucking Ippocrate Giannone, you’re messing with the wrong family.” He muttered under his breath furiously as he picked up his phone and called on one of his father’s capos in New York. “Saul, talk to me. What is this prick doing?”
“Sidonia Gaines’ family put pressure on Giannone to get their daughter home. They didn’t seem to care too much when it was Giannone’s niece being sent to live with the Lucchesi family, but they drew the line at their child. Then not only did he let her go, but he also performed her wedding ceremony.”
“They agreed to the dowry price,” Icaro snorted. “They took Vodingo’s money. Do not tell me they suddenly grew a conscience for selling their daughter for a measly lump of cash. Sidonia is better off without them.”
“Her mother is losing her mind with guilt, apparently and told the fat priest she was going to go to the police because they believe he was sexually trafficking girls from his church.”
“The mother who beat her daughter at her priest’s encouragement wants to question why her daughter would run into the arms of a stranger who promised to spoil her rotten, love her unconditionally and allow her to live side-by-side with her best friend.”
“Yes.”
Icaro rubbed his forehead in frustration, “and Giannone is asking around if the girls were seen in New York?”
“He approached the Romano family and asked them to watch for the girls and to provide him details of their location. He also discussed the possibility of collecting the girls and sending them back to Rhode Island. Romano’s man quoted an exorbitant price for kidnapping a Lucchesi bride and so for now Giannone is asking only for information.”
“Romano is an idiot and the only reason they have any kind of business in New York is because he’s permitted to by Dad. We could wipe him out with nothing more than an hour of time on a Sunday afternoon for shits and giggles and he’s entertaining this crap from Giannone?”
“Not only is he entertaining it, but he also put an entire crew who have been doing drive-by visits of the Lucchesi estate, multiple bars and clubs we own or are affiliated with and even very boldly approached my wife and her sisters who were shopping on Fifth Avenue.”
“I read how your wife responded,” Icaro gave a laugh.
“Stabbed the thug through the hand he tried to touch her with. Then she kicked him in the balls and has her guards take him away.”
“Your bride is scary, my cousin.”
“She is. It’s why I treat her like a queen and never upset her. She would eat my spleen on a cracker while she stood over my impotent body.”
Icaro threw his head back and laughed at the comment, “again, I am grateful my bride is sweet and kind.”
“You are a lucky man.”
“I am the luckiest man. If you look up the definition of an angel it is her face you would see, Saul. She is a saint.”
“Well, you do know opposites attract,” Saul teased him.
“She is putting me through my paces, and I deserve it. I know I will never deserve her.” He took a breath, “is Doris still in the city?”
“She is. What are you thinking?”
“Have her take all his money. He gave a vow of poverty as a man of the cloth. Make it a reality for him.” He played with a paperweight on his desk and imagined pounding the triangular object into the skull of the priest.
“She will do so with great pleasure.” Saul laughed.
“Can we take a look at Roman’s businesses? Do a deep dive. He crossed a line looking for my wife and Vodingo’s wife. We won’t take such an insult lightly.”
“I’ll have it done and sent to you by your morning.”
“Thank you, cousin.” He looked up and noted Zorah standing in the doorway. “Ah, the beautiful saintly bride I call my wife is here. It is time for me to spend time with her. I will talk to you tomorrow.”
“Goodnight, Icaro.”
He ended his call and smiled at Zorah, “do you remember meeting Saul at our dinner on Saturday evening?”
“No.”
“Do not worry. There were so many people at our dinner. You will meet him and his wife when we get back to New York. His wife is a spitfire. He met her if you can believe it, on the New York Subway system.”
“Really? How did they meet? Is he a Lucchesi son?”
“He is. She is his one. He is one of my father’s cousins. My Nonno’s brother, Dad’s uncle, is Saul’s father. Saul is close to Dad’s age.”
“They met on the Subway?”
“She mugged him.”
He took delight in the way her eyes widened, and her mouth dropped open. “She mugged him?”
“Saw his Rolex and thought he was distracted watching a pretty girl on the subway. She mugged him and stole his wallet and his watch.”
“Oh, my goodness.”
“He let her take it, or so he claims. While he was watching his mark, she was watching him, but his crew was watching her approach him and rob him. They were going to punish her but the minute he looked into her eyes, bam. He was hooked.”
“Did she immediately fall for him?”
“Yes. He told her so long as she passed him back the drivers’ license from his wallet, she could keep everything else in it. He gave her a mansion, a fancy sports car, and an entire haute couture wardrobe. She grew up in foster care. She makes no pretense about not liking money. He’s apparently also hung like a horse. She’s on baby number four.” As she blushed a bright red, he realized he’d never tire of seeing her when she was flushed.
“Does she love him now?”
“They’ve been together ten years. She is as enamored with him as he is with her. A few months back we were at a party and an enemy of the family tried to get at Saul. He pulled a knife on Saul. Before Saul or any of his men could react, she was on this guy like white on rice. It took four of Saul’s men to pull her off.”
“Are all the women in this family violent?”
“Not at all. I can think of two right now from Providence who are kind and sweet.” He patted his knee. “Come sit with me. I want to show you something.”
The fact she didn’t hesitate to walk towards him, made him thank the heavens for gifting him a woman with such a giant heart open to forgiveness. There was hope for him yet.
