Surprise Guest

Zorah watched as emotions filled Icaro’s eyes and he gave a single shake of his head.

“I have loved you my entire life. From the minute they put you in my arms and I looked into your eyes, I loved you, Zorah. The love I have has changed over the years. What was once an innocent love fueled with the need to protect and comfort you, gradually over the years, has become a very intense and emotional connection to you. I cannot express to you how much my heart aches with the notion of ever being away from you. You are my entire world, and I would cease to exist without you in it.”

“You speak very pretty words for an assassin named the Beast.”

He smiled at her, “pretty words perhaps but I mean them from the depths of my dark soul.”

“Your soul is not dark, Icaro.”

He gave a laugh, “let’s not get carried away, Zorah. It’s as dark as they come. When the time comes for our lives on this planet to be ended, if there is a heaven and a hell, we won’t be going to the same place.”

She frowned, “you cannot say such things.”

“Ippocrate said it to me after you left. He was hoping to convince me to not kill him as if all the murderous things I’ve done in the past are going to be affected by of his measly death. He was correct though. I want to make sure my time with you on this earth is spent loving you the way you deserve because eternity might not be ours.”

“Then I will spend all of my life praying for your soul.”

He leaned forward and gently kissed her forehead and then frowned as the car began creeping up the driveway. He tapped the window, and it rolled down, “why are we going so slow?”

“Unidentified car in the driveway,” Amauri said over his shoulder. “The crew ahead of us told us to take our time. They don’t seem to think it’s too much of a threat, only they wanted to make the person leave.”

Zorah looked at Icaro worriedly, “could it be my mother? She was calling my phone an awful lot earlier and sent multiple texts about how Chester lied. She has nowhere to go now Ippocrate isn’t protecting her. Maybe she found her way here.”

“Not a chance in hell she got here ahead of us. She wouldn’t even know our address let alone be able to get a flight from Providence to get her to our place. I’m more concerned about how this person got through our gate which should have been closed.” He gave Amauri a pointed look.

Amauri was listening to something in his earpiece and then groaned loudly, “it’s the fucking Walrus.”

“Caiu is here?” Zorah wrinkled her nose up in confusion. “Why?”

“Not sure, Zorah,” Amauri shook his head, “but it seems he was part of the contract which was installing the bar and lounge area in the mansion. He arrived with the construction crew who came in to do a final sweep this morning and hasn’t left.”

“He’s going to wish he had.” Icaro was fuming.

“How did he know we were coming here today?”

“I don’t fucking know but I am done with his gargantuan pile of shit. Get us up there and I’m going to make him wish he’d stayed back home in Italy.” Icaro ordered furiously.

The car stopped inches from where Caiu Giarre leaned casually against a sports car. Icaro was out and in front of the man before anyone else could get out of the car.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

“I heard you found her unharmed. I wanted to see for myself.”

“It is not your place.”

Zorah rolled her eyes as Icaro pulled a gun from one of the men surrounding the Walrus and leveled it at his face. “My love,” she called out as she approached, “perhaps let him say what is on his mind before you opt to splatter his mind everywhere?”

“Zorah.”

The Walrus’s voice reached her and the happiness in it made her brows furrow in confusion. She still could not understand this man’s fascination with her. She gave a shake of her head as Icaro pulled the slide back on the gun he was holding.

“Mr. Giarre, why are you here trespassing at our home?”

“There is no need to be so formal. We are friends.”

“Friends would imply a greater relationship than what we have. You were friends with my husband, but you seem hellbent on destroying your friendship and I’m confused as to the why. What is it which makes you covet his wife? Is it because he has always lived the life you longed for and now you want his bride as well?”

Icaro turned his head to her a fraction, “harsh but fair. Answer her question, Giarre.”

“You call me by my last name?” he scowled at Icaro.

“The affectionate nickname was reserved for a man I considered a friend. This is no longer the case.”

“This is unfortunate.”

“It truly is,” Icaro didn’t argue him. “Our businesses have often been intertwined. You will find over the next little while, we will no longer be contemplating business with any of the Giarre family.”

“We have contracts Icaro.”

“Which when they expire will not be renewed.” He glared at the man, “you knew of the group of six men living in the house on the street and failed to share the information until Zorah was taken. She could have been killed.”

He shrugged, “I was not expecting them to make their move as quickly as they did. I understood they were hoping to recover the woman who you’d captured before absconding with Zorah. My mistake.”

“Yeah, I don’t believe you. I think you wanted them to take Zorah and to kill me and then you were going to run your own little rescue operation and convince her with me dead, you were the next best option.”

“I did not want you dead, but I admit to wanting to rescue Zorah on my own. I was surprised to find another team rescued her before I could get the chance, but I was happy to know she was safe.”

“Why are you here?” Zorah asked bluntly.

“To give you an option, Zorah. I imagine now you’ve been given time away from Icaro, you realize the brainwashing which has been ongoing. I know you better than you think, and I want the chance to prove this to you.”

She exchanged a glance with Icaro and gave a laugh. “You really think I’d pick you over Icaro?”

“I do.”

“Why? Don’t give me this story either of seeing me on the balcony. There is more to it. What is it? Why? Why do you want to be with me so badly it would cause you to throw away a friendship of nearly four decades? More importantly, why do you think you know me better than I think?”
