Chapter 36 "Sebastian,am I not obedient enough?"
When Sebastian sent Eleanor back to the hospital, she had already passed out. She was rushed to the emergency room and the results of her examination were slightly better than last time. Eleanor's coma was caused by her weak body and strong mental stimulation. Fortunately, she was sent to the hospital in time; otherwise, there would have been a risk to her life.
During Eleanor's unconsciousness,Sebastian arranged for someone to take John to the crematorium and let Michael find a good feng shui cemetery plot. The news of John's death spread quickly online and David heard about it from passing nurses just after finishing an operation.
His face changed as he anxiously asked: "Who died?"
"John," replied the nurse. "The one who received his first trial sentence last week? He had his second trial today but on his way there he snatched someone's phone and fell off a building."
David lost all expression on his face as he thought about John’s death - what about Eleanor? Wasn't she supposed to be at court today? Did she already know? A series of questions arose in his mind.
The nurse looked at him puzzled before leaving awkwardly.
David took out his phone from his coat pocket with trembling hands and called Eleanor first but no one answered. Then he called her caregiver who picked up after three rings.
"Dr. Miller," said David urgently,"Where is Eleanor? Are you with her?"
"I'm here."
"Where is she?"
"Ms. Stone is in the ward; she just finished seeing her father and fainted due to emotional stress..."
David started running towards the ward while apologizing profusely to patients and nurses along the way before speaking into his phone again: "I'll be right over."
As he ran,David worried endlessly with that sentence from Eleanor’s caregiver ringing in his head - Eleanor fainted due to emotional stress. She needed someone to comfort her now more than ever, but what could he say when he saw her? "My condolences" would be like rubbing salt into the wound.
David slowed down suddenly and looked pained as he ran.
...
Eleanor lay quietly on the bed with pale lips and tightly closed eyes. Sebastian sat beside her, gently holding her hand in his palm to keep it warm. He was starting to feel sorry for this woman, but not because of any feelings; he knew better than anyone that he wouldn't fall in love with Eleanor.
As Eleanor had said before,he was cruel to her. If there were even a hint of affection towards her, then he wouldn't have treated her so harshly. That's why the person whom Sebastian loved should be Victoria who grew up with him and saved his life six years ago.
He promised Victoria that he would protect her for life and couldn't possibly like anyone else even if she was his nominal wife.
Sebastian let out a sigh as his gaze slowly traced over Eleanor's features. At only twenty-four years old, every curve of hers seemed precisely measured by a ruler beneath exquisite looks; even when she had no expression on her face,it always felt like she was smiling because of the natural upward curve at the corners of her mouth.
But what really caught people’s attention were those cat-like eyes which shone black as coal under light - they made you feel obedient just by looking at them! Her bone structure was extremely beautiful too; even wearing ragged clothes couldn’t hide that radiance about herself.
In Los Angeles where beauties abound everywhere one turns their head around every corner,Eleanor's beauty among women exuded an overwhelming sense of dominance making people afraid to look directly at it while also causing men’s hearts go wild for it!
Six years ago at a banquet party where Sebastian first met Eleanor, she had stolen everyone's attention with her dazzling red dress. Sebastian described her as a red rose facing the sun - flamboyant and eye-catching. But now, that red rose had withered away; its roots rotted and stem brittle enough to break at the slightest touch.
When did she start changing? Even her smile became bitter over these years. She was clearly someone who loved to laugh but for the past few years, even when sleeping, she would frown in worry.
Eleanor's eyelashes trembled slightly as she opened her eyes and saw Sebastian sitting beside her staring at her hand which he held earlier before retracting it awkwardly: "Are you thirsty? Do you want some water?"
Eleanor looked expressionless with open eyes on her face without any sign of life or emotion. This made Sebastian feel inexplicably panicked like he lost his soul in an instant; all emotions seemed to have disappeared from Eleanor’s face.
"Sebastian," said Eleanor suddenly breaking the silence between them,"Did my father say anything to you before this happened?"
Sebastian, who was pouring boiling water from behind, trembled and spilled it on the back of his hand when he heard Eleanor's words. A burning pain pierced through his skin into his heart.
Sebastian didn't say anything, but his stiff spine confirmed all of Eleanor's suspicions.
Eleanor still had a lifeless expression on her face as she looked at the ceiling with dim eyes. She remembered John's last words to her over the phone and tears flowed uncontrollably down her cheeks.
"My dad told me to be careful around you before he jumped off the building..." People who knew John thought he was a cowardly person - weak at home and outside. How could someone like him have the courage to jump off a building?
Unless something happened that forced him to commit suicide in order to solve it. After thinking for a long time,Eleanor realized that only Sebastian could make her father - this cowardly man - abandon his fear and choose suicide.
"What does my dad's suicide have anything to do with me?" Sebastian quickly regained composure after spilling water on himself. He turned around holding a glass of water and looked directly into Eleanor's eyes.
"Maybe he couldn't bear the guilt in his conscience or maybe he felt that spending life in prison was worse than death."
"Is that really true?" Eleanor stared at Sebastian as if trying to see through him.
"Sebastian,I promise not to divorce you. Can you give my father back to me?"
"Your father is already dead," Sebastian calmly stated this fact.
Yes...her father was already dead...
"In that case, let's get divorced." She couldn't convince herself or Sebastian anymore about continuing their marriage; it had been a mistake from the beginning.
Sebastian spoke coldly: "Don't even think about getting divorced."
"What do you want me to do then? Am I not obedient enough for you yet?" With tears in her eyes,Eleanor looked at the man in front of her. Her voice was hoarse and painful as she shouted,"I've been obedient to you like a dog. What else do you want from me?"
