Chapter 24
No, the Crawford family mansion was not like this, Abigail remembered very clearly that her house was not like this, this wasn't how it looked before.
The white facade and golden door now turned into a brown facade and white door, completely different from what she remembered.
But the address was indeed correct, she wasn't mistaken. This was her house.
Tightly pursing her lips, Abigail looked at the Asher beside her and slowly said, "How did my house turn into this? I can't possibly remember it wrong."
Asher affirmed her theory, "You did not remember wrong."
With her upper teeth clenched on her lower lip, Abigail's voice trembled badly, "Then, how did my house become like this?"
"This is not your home now."
How could this not be her home anymore? Abigail didn't want to believe that what Asher said was true, she had lived here for many years, how could it change just like that?
Abigail stumbled forward and rang the doorbell, Asher stood beside her and didn't attempt to stop her.
Someone soon came to open the door, a middle-aged woman in her forties or fifties, whom Abigail didn't recognize.
"May I ask who you are looking for?"
Abigail said with some excitement, "Hello, I'm looking for Morgan Crawford."
"We don't have this person here, you are the wrong place."
Tugging on the middle-aged woman's arm, Abigail raised her voice with red teary eyes, "Is he really not here? Please think about it again."
The middle-aged woman continued, "No, I know what I'm saying, I am the old maid of this family, no one like that lives here."
Slowly releasing her hand, Abigail forced herself to calm down, "I'm sorry... may I ask when you move here?"
"About a year ago, right? But I heard that the previous owner of the house here seems to be surnamed Crawford, I wonder if this is the person you are looking for?"
It was then that Abigail understood that her family had moved away from here.
As for why they moved away, Abigail couldn't remember.
"Asher, do you know where my family lives now?" Abigail asked Asher as they walked back to the car. She just couldn't accept that her mother had become like that, so she hoped to find her other relatives to truly understand what had happened. Her heart was in turmoil just by thinking.
It was a while before Asher nodded to Abigail.
With that, Asher also told the driver an address he should take them to.
After hearing that address, the driver froze, but without saying anything more, he started the car and drove away.
Abigail realized something was wrong when the car came to a steady stop at the cemetery.
Angrily dhe turned to Asher, choked and said, "I asked to see my family, why did you bring me to the cemetery?"
Some things, after all, could not be hidden for long.
And instead of her learning the truth from the mouth of others, Asher felt it was better for him to tell Abigail himself.
"Your father is here."
Abigail's eyes were heavy with tears, her father was here? In other words, her father was no longer alive.
Impossible, it was not true, clearly in her memory, she was telling her own dad, how much she truly liked Dave and how she wanted to get engaged to him. Her father smiled and said to her, "Your eyes tell how much you like him."
Grabbing Asher by the collar, Abigail was already in tears, "You're lying to me, right? How can my father be here? I don't believe it, he can't be here, it's impossible... he's not dead..." Asher did not utter a word, and he did not push her away, instead he brought out a tissue to help wipe the tears of Abigail who was already on the verge of collapsing as she digested the tragic news.
She couldn't believe this was real, it looked like a dream, she wished it was just a dream, that would have been better.
Her eyes were so red and swollen when took the mineral water in the hand of the Asher and drank it in small sips.
Abigail drank the entire bottle of mineral water before she turned to him, "I want to see my father."
Asher nodded, taking the lead in getting out of the car just to help Abigail open the door. Deep down he hated her hurting like this.
Dizziness hit Abigail hard that she had to hold Asher's arm to get out of the car.
The sun was scorching hot, but once she stepped into the cemetery, she felt an incomparable chill in her bones, and she could only tug harder on Asher's arm.
Abigail loved he was her with her, she was so afraid that once she had let go of his hand, Asher would disappear.
Asher accompanied her in a slow pace, as Abigail legs felt so hard to walk, so heavy.
Finally Asher stopped his pace at a tombstone. Abigail was already sweating profusely as she looked down at the tombstone, her father's name, and photo were placed above it. His kind and amiable smile remained with him, Abigail could no longer control herself anymore that she chose to sit in front of the tombstone.
The tombstone felt so cold when she hugged it tightly, she wanted to warm it up, in hopes that her father might come back to life?
Why was her life like this? One moment she had everything she could ask for; a happy and beautiful family, and a boyfriend who loved her just the way she loved him. And in a twinkle of an eye she wakes up with none of it.
"Daddy, please tell me that all this isn't true,"
Her hand fell lightly on her father's photo, her heart aching to the point of forgetting to shed tears.
Asher did not stop her from hugging the tombstone, he just quietly stood behind her.
After stroking her father's photo, Abigail's hand, moving slowly, fell on the words of the tombstone.
The time on the tombstone let Abigail know that her father had passed away two years ago.
It was before she married Asher that her father left this world.
Abigail didn't dare to think too much because her head was spinning round, the pain was getting worse and worse, she was afraid she would pass out from the pain.
If only she could go back to two years ago, when her parents were healthy and well, then she would love to faint.
Unfortunately, the last shred of sanity she had left was telling her that this can't be undone. This was her new life.
Such a fact was too painful to accept, that's why she chose to forget it.
But Abigail could only escape the pain for a moment, she could not permanently forget all of her loved ones.
Abigail slowly turned her head and look at Asher after what seemed like a century.
Asher stood straight, watching her hug the tombstone for the last time before standing up.
But just as Abigail took a step, she fell directly into Asher's arms.
She was still so dizzy but that didn't stop Abigail from struggling to get out of the Asher's arms.
She tilted her head, trying to blink back the tears she stared at Asher.
Pursing her lips, Abigail spoke in a voice that was hoarse as hell, "How did my father die?"
