Ch. 135: Unleashing Amber
CHAPTER 135:
Evan~
No, I send to Xavier.
Yes, he sends back. Do you want them to break in there and kill her? Mate can’t defend herself in that cell.
I leap over another body and head to assist a wolf who is on the ground, a leg twisted
the wrong way. I rush in and knock them over just as this guy turns to face me. The look on his face is one of surprise. But I don’t think about it twice as I sink my teeth into the area I targeted and tear with all my force to the side. There’s a scream in my ear for a minute but then he’s silent. I shake my head violently left and right until I hear a clear crack. I dropped him, and his body thuds on the earth.
I rush back but the wolf I assisted is dead. Goddess. I was too late.
I saw another witch battling three wolves and her hair reminds me vaguely of Amber and I look around for a second, taking in all the chaos. I see a vampire that blazes past fights and he breaks through. He’s heading for the packhouse.
Amber.
I take off and chase him down. He’s so fast and my heart feels like it’s going to beat right out of my chest. I can’t fail here. I can’t fail her. He can’t get her.
I push myself to the limit, my muscles scream at me but I push harder. I wish with everything that Kyle was here just to slow this guy down for just a second. I snap my jaws at him but he’s just too fast. He’s four, maybe five inches out of my grasp. He’s running for the front door. I push harder, and snap. Closer. So close. Again. Another miss. One more. I’ve got it! I have the hood of his jacket in my jaw. I twist.
He’s knocked off his feet and we go tumbling together. He lashes out with his nails trying to fight me off, but I ignore the pain. He won’t get to her. Not now, not ever. I’ll die stopping him, stopping everyone, I don’t care.
We wrestle for some time and he almost scratches out one of my eyes. I barely move out of the way in time. But his wild throw leaves me with the perfect opening. I take it. My teeth sink deeply into his flesh and I tear his head clean off.
It goes flying and the body slinks to the floor. I pant heavily, my heart still racing. I look at his body, and back towards the way we came. My side is weak without the help of Ally or Kyle. We need help. I need help. We need her.
I jolt to the right and head to the cells, shifting. I hit the door and passed right by a guard, rushing down the stairs until I saw her.
“Evan!” she yells when she sees me, rushing to the cell door. “Goddess!”
She’s crying as I find the spare keys and rush at her door. I unlock it and rush to her. She’s in my arms for the first time and the feeling makes my heart stop.
“Evan! Where are you hurt?!” She's openly crying and pushes back against me to examine me.
It makes me look down and I realize I’m covered in blood.
“Amber - Amber,” I say trying to get her attention. “It’s not mine, it’s not mine - I’m okay!”
She hugs me fiercely and breathes in slowly, shaking a bit.
“I thought-” she says and stops.
“I’m okay,” I repeat softly. “I had to get to you. They’re getting through Amber. I could have lost you if I hadn’t gotten that last vamp.”
She stiffens and pushes back, “Let’s go!”
She’s pulling me along and I follow without a question. The determination is in her voice. We’re heading back into the fight.
She pushes the door open and squints at the light. A guard is there shining a flashlight right at us.
“We’re going!” I push my Beta aura out at him and he opens his mouth but shuts it.
We take off running and she follows my lead. There’s another vampire that’s pushed through our line and she’s got her hands lowered, whispering words I don’t know. Then there’s a lightning bolt coming out of her hands heading straight to him.
“Don’t leave my side!” I shout to her as I shift, taking him on as he recovers from her blast.
“Never,” she says resolutely.
I feel power in those words. I believe her.
Rachel~
There’s fire everywhere and it is making it really hard to see. Not that I need to. It seems that between what I have picked up from Ally’s ability and Kyle’s ability… I can feel the people on our side. So I send them all a constant stream of amplification. I become a river. Letting magic and amplification out.
Jake is a force. He burns enemies and holds onto a wall of fire that seems to be expanding its reach further and further down the line. He lets it go every once in a while, to let more in, and sends walls to other areas, creating corners for our wolves to push The Collective into.
I push strength and speed into our wolves. I push power into Jake as he battles on and controls the walls of fire and torches that fly out at our enemy. I send lightning out to witches and vampires, trying to hit their hearts. I can almost feel them. Almost. So I send a blast here, and a blast there until I’ve tripped one or completely charred one.
I connect with a witch and the moment I hit her heart I know I’ve got it. I amplify myself. And I electrocute her from the inside out. And the next second she’s down.
Somehow our connection sent something back. Her energy. Wow. I didn’t even mean to do it, I didn’t have a hand on her. I didn’t pull. At least I don’t think I did…
I shoot out aiming for a vampire this time. It’s harder, he’s much faster. And it doesn’t help that he’s wrestling with a wolf.
I find another target, someone getting through the line. I strike three times before I hit them just right. I amplify myself and try to replicate what I did earlier. They're down. And I get hit by a surge of power. Their power. Just a bit of strength. It was a vampire.
What in the world is this? Am I pulling now even when I’m throwing out magic?
My thoughts get interrupted by the sight before me. Jake roars and I know he’s seen it too. A huge dark figure, seemingly made out of shadows. But its red eyes give it away. It’s alive. And it’s tearing through the walls of fire like they aren’t even there.
And it’s heading right for us.
Amber~
Evan and I move together like we’re dancing. Like we’re dancing in synchrony to music only we can hear. He throws witches and vampires in my way and I fight them. He defends my back as I battle whoever is in front of me.
I watch his back and hit people trying to sneak up on him when he’s outnumbered. But I don’t ever leave his side. He asked. I promised.
It feels crazy to be outside again after all this time. The wind, even the fake wind created by the storms, feels exhilarating on my skin. My hair whips around and the air chills me. I know there’s goosebumps on my arms, but I don’t pay attention to them. I just fight. I try not to think about the girl in front of me, Abigail. She’s got a scowl on her face as she hits me with a blast of fire. I pull up ice, my specialty, and block her. Throwing shards of it back. She dodges what she can but I still make a few hits. We go back and forth for some time. I can’t afford to look at Evan but I don’t need to. I hear him, feel him, behind me, battling beside me.
I hit her twice, quickly, and in some moment, Evan was there, tearing at her. I was worried I would hit him if I meant to strike her and I had to wait. A vampire charged at me and I hit him with an icy wind that knocked him clean off his feet. In the next second Evan throws the witch in my new direction and I hit her once more, her defenses down, and it’s a direct hit. Evan rushes to the vampire I knocked down and bites him, thrashing him about, and I turn to find the next target. It’s three witches and they are very focused on me.
About time for a real challenge.
